🗞 Tesla Invests $1.5B in Bitcoin, Plans to Accept Crypto Payments
The announcement that much of the crypto world has been hoping for is here: Tesla has invested in bitcoin.
- In an annual report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for the year ending Dec. 31, 2020, the firm said that under its new investment policy it has "invested an aggregate $1.50 billion in bitcoin ... and may acquire and hold digital assets from time to time or long term."
- The electric car company founded by Elon Musk added, "In January 2021, we updated our investment policy to provide us with more flexibility to further diversify and maximize returns on our cash that is not required to maintain adequate operating liquidity."
- The policy includes investment in "alternative reserve assets including digital assets, gold bullion, gold exchange-traded funds and other assets."
- Tesla also expects to begin accepting bitcoin as a form of payment for its products "in the near future." This would initially be on a "limited basis, which we may or may not liquidate upon receipt."
🗞 Ethereum Futures Are Now Trading on CME
The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) has launched its much-anticipated futures contracts for ether (ETH), the native cryptocurrency of the Ethereum blockchain network.
Announced in mid-December, trading in ether futures went live late Sunday, with the February contract registering an opening price of $1,669.75. At the time, the spot price stood at around $1,600.
The Chicago-based exchange has traded 77 contracts so far, with most activity concentrated on the February expiry. The futures contracts are legal agreements to buy or sell the crypto asset at a predetermined price at a later date.
🗞 Ledger Owners Can Now Access DeFi From Ledger’s Mobile App
- You can now access DeFi projects in Ledger's mobile app.
- It's through an integration with WalletConnect.
*Ledger users can already access decentralized finance apps through services like MetaMask and MyEtherWallet.
Crypto hardware wallet firm Ledger today announced that its users can interact with DeFi protocols straight from its mobile app, LedgerLive.
To reduce reliance on wallets such as browser-based Ethereum wallet MetaMask and Ethereum gateway MyEtherWallet, the Parisian hardware wallet company has integrated WalletConnect, an open-source protocol that connects crypto wallets to decentralized applications.
🗞 Ex-OCC Chief Brooks Calls Tesla’s Bitcoin Buy a Bit ‘Scary News’ for Rest of World
The debasing of global currencies is why companies like Tesla and MicroStrategy are investing in bitcoin and that should be troubling for the rest of the world, former acting U.S. Comptroller of the Currency Brian Brooks said Monday on CoinDesk TV.
- "For people who are invested in bitcoin it's exciting news," said Brooks, who left the OCC last month. "For people who are looking at the rest of the world it's actually a little bit scary news."
- Brooks was responding in part to Tesla's announcement Monday that it's invested $1.5 billion in bitcoin and would be looking to acquire more digital assets. That news sent the price of bitcoin to a new all-time high.
- The former comptroller noted the U.S. money supply has risen 25% since the start of the pandemic and will be up 40% compared with a year ago once the most recent round of stimulus is done in the next few days.
