🗞 $10,000 Remains Bitcoin’s Price to Beat

It was $10,000 or bust as bitcoin traded unremarkably for much of Monday.

Bitcoin (BTC) was trading around $9,706 as of 20:00 UTC (4 p.m. ET), slipping by less than a percent over the previous 24 hours.

At 00:00 UTC on Monday (8:00 p.m. Sunday ET), bitcoin was changing hands ataround $9,760 on spot exchanges including Coinbase. The price has stayed more or less in a range between $9,600 and 9,700, keeping bitcoin above its 50-day and 10-day moving averages, a bullish technical indicator. This sentiment was helped by large volumes of trading Sunday, when prices rallied from below $9,400 to as high as $9,800.

Despite the lack of action, the world’s largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization has made very positive gains overall in 2020, said Josh Rager, a cryptocurrency trader and founder of educational platform BlockRoots. “Bitcoin is still near $10,000. Just because it’s not pumping, it’s still performing well,” he said.

Since the start of 2020, bitcoin has appreciated over 35%, while gold is up 11% and the S&P 500 index of U.S. stocks is flat, back to where it was at the start of the year.

“Friday’s incredibly positive U.S. nonfarm payrolls number has led to the largest divergence between Gold and S&P 500 prices since the March lows,” said Singapore-based QCP Capital in an investor note.

🗞 66% of Coinbase Users Willing to Leave the Exchange Due to Mounting Privacy Concerns

Two-thirds of people who use Coinbase are willing to leave the platform following reports that the U.S. exchange plans to sell user data to two government agencies for $250,000.

Cryptocurrency trader and analyst John Rager carried out a poll on Twitter, asking his 73,000 followers: “Would you actually delete or stop using your Coinbase account?”

Over 5,000 people responded, and 66% said they would opt out of the regulated exchange, one of the world’s biggest. The remaining 33% expressed a willingness to stay. The platform holds thousands of personal user information drawn from stringent know-your-customer requirements, in compliance with US policies.

Coinbase is in the eye of a storm after reports emerged at the weekend alleging that the crypto exchange is selling a blockchain tool that provides law enforcement agencies with superior analytical capabilities.

🗞 Brave Browser’s Affiliate Link Controversy, Explained

The browser maker Brave, which launched around protecting online privacy, was called out this weekend when users noticed that typing in the name of the leading cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, resulted in an auto-complete that ended in a referral link.

This replicates on an instance of Brave used here at CoinDesk. Automatically adding the tag to the URL creates the appearance that Brave is adding tracking to visits to the exchange’s website that were direct, rather than mediated through some kind of referral (such as Brave’s in-browser ads).

Monero developer Riccardo Spagni, also known as Fluffypony, captured some of this unease when he tweeted, “Bro. I don’t want my browser touching the URL I type in the address bar.”

First noticed by Yannick Eckl on June 6 and first reported by Decrypt, the browser was sending signals to Binance that a user had been referred by Brave when they had not been. Brave founder Brendan Eich has since acknowledged the mistake and told users that the referral language should stop appearing soon.

🗞 Monero-for-Bail Project Sees Increased Demand During Protests

A software program that mines Monero to bail people out of jail has seen an uptick in use as protests over the police killing of George Floyd continue across the U.S. The software is called Bail Bloc and runs in the background of your computer, passively generating Monero that is then distributed to bail funds.

“I noticed a 20% increase in our hashrate this week as opposed to last week,” Grayson Earle, who developed the Bail Bloc software, said in an email.

“We are dedicated as a project and as individuals to the movement for black lives, and feel that the urgency of the situation requires direct action and people should direct resources to organizations on the ground that can respond rapidly.”

The hash rate is the measure of how quickly the cryptographic calculations for mining are executed. The Bail Bloc hash rate is currently 94.5 KH/s, according to Earle.

🗞 Ethereum Topped Bitcoin in Network Daily Fees Over Weekend

Daily Ethereum network fees surpassed those of the Bitcoin (BTC) network for two consecutive days on June 6 and June 7, data obtained by on-chain market analysis firm Glassnode shows.

According to Glassnode, on June 6, the total amount in fees spent on the Ethereum network added up to $498,000, compared to Bitcoin’s $308,000. The gap continued to widen the next day, totalling $540,000 and $258,000 represectively.
The “feepening”

This is the second time Ethereum network fees have topped Bitcoin’s this year. On March 12, there was a sudden spike in Ethereum network fees, which totalled almost $800,000, greatly exceeding the amount paid by Bitcoin users on the same day. The Ethereum network was experiencing major congestion at the time, which likely prompted users to pay more fees for their transactions.
