I am obsessed with the Cosmos — or more precisely, with the connection between human beings and the Cosmos.
At the same time, I have an empirical relationship to reality, and that can seem a bit limiting when it comes to such vast topics. Or does it?
Some time ago, I looked into what the sky actually is. I read about why it appears blue — and that opened something in me. Especially this: the breathable part of our atmosphere is only 12 km thick… while the Earth’s diameter is about 12,000 km.
That thin veil above us — it’s nothing in comparison to the vastness below and specially beyond.
More recently, I came across a scientific law I had forgotten: matter cannot be created or destroyed — only transformed.
This means: all matter in the Universe comes from the same origin and is continuously recycled.
This means: you, me, snails, ants, elephants, stones, herbs, lizards, snakes, stars, black holes, jellyfish, microbes, viruses, galaxies… we all come from the same stuff.
So the next time you read or hear: "We’re all one", I’d like you to think of that.
Back to this so-called empirical relationship to the Cosmos. With this in mind — doesn’t it already feel a little different?
At first, the Universe was mainly hydrogen and helium. But deep inside stars, through stellar nucleosynthesis, matter transformed. The atoms that make up your body were literally forged in stars.
So when I say, we are stardust — it’s not a metaphor. It’s a scientific fact. But it’s also poetic — and I hope the idea fills you with wonder.
Empirical experience of the Cosmos? Well, I am made of it.
Do I consciously feel that? Yes. Sometimes. For a brief moment — when I look at the sky, or meditate on that truth.
I invite you to try it.
You may feel something strange — like a brief contraction, followed by an expansion into… infinity. Even if it’s just for a second — I promise it’s worth it.
And if you come back to it again and again, something will change: Your thoughts will shift. New ideas will emerge. You may even feel more creative in your daily life.
That’s the empirical experience of being a Cosmological Being.
