I used to think that polluted air was the biggest threat around me… until I got addicted to the news, not car smoke but headline overload, fast-moving disasters, and non-stop negativity flooding my phone, i once tried to take a full day off from my phone, i couldn’t. Not because I missed people, but because I realized my digital space had become a part of me even when it was exhausting me.
To me, a healthy environment isn’t just clean air or green spaces it’s also peace of mind, and peace doesn’t survive in an environment where your screen constantly screams for your attention, i believe a healthy environment includes both physical and mental spaces, and in today’s world, the digital space is just as real, if your digital surroundings are filled with anxiety, conflict, fake news, or endless distractions, then no matter how clean your room or city is, your mind remains polluted.
A healthy environment needs balance, that includes access to calm, nature, honest information, kindness, and silence, in the digital world, that means turning off toxic notifications, unfollowing negativity, limiting screen time, and replacing noise with meaning, just like we clean our homes, we need to “clean” our timelines, curating what we consume online is not a luxury it’s a necessity for emotional survival.
My environment is not clean, i still wake up to a flood of news, much of it bad, i still scroll out of habit, not intention, my environment is loud, fast, and emotionally draining, it’s not fully my fault the systems are designed this way but I’ve come to accept that it’s my responsibility to change it, at least within my control.
I need digital discipline, i need quiet, i need a routine where I connect more with myself than with headlines, that might mean digital detox days, consuming content mindfully, or even replacing doom-scrolling with a walk, a book, or time with people who recharge me, a healthy environment, to me, starts from within but we have to build the walls around it with care, including what we allow into our screens.
