We all feel physical laziness and tiredness from time to time, and for me, that’s normal. But what I started thinking about recently is whether we are also experiencing mental laziness. I noticed that when I tried to think about something, even something simple, my mind couldn’t come up with any ideas. That made me pause and reflect, and I realized there were a few reasons behind this, which I’ll try to solve.
But first, how does our mind become lazy, and what are the causes of this? I believe it’s a very serious issue that we should not ignore. What makes it hard to notice is that we continue doing our regular routines without any problem. However, it became clear to me when I tried to think of a new idea, and I found myself unable to do it.
This made me feel uncomfortable, and I tried to avoid the thought and stop thinking altogether. But then I decided to revisit the issue and try to activate my mind again. I began researching mental laziness and discovered that one of the main causes is the mobile phone not just because of constant scrolling, but because it mainly works as a sending device, not a receiving one.
What I mean is that it keeps giving us information, but it doesn't receive anything from us. If you want to look up anything, you go to Google. If you want to watch something, it’s on YouTube. All of this makes our brains passive receivers of information, without sending out or creating anything new. This leads to what feels like mental decay constant laziness and an inability to generate new ideas.
This might not be the case for students in schools or universities, because their minds are always active receiving and also creating ideas. But for us employees or people with fixed jobs, our work often becomes routine. Our brains run on auto-pilot and there’s no room left for creativity or new thoughts.
I found that the main solution is to stay away from phones and computers as much as possible, and to try reactivating the mind through reading. Reading is the only way to make the mind start thinking again. After that, we can try writing and generating new ideas by writing different topics whether poetry, literature, or anything else. Try to think creatively and come up with new ideas so your brain starts working again. That way, you won’t struggle when trying to think of a new project or plan.
