I've lived a lot of life, have been to many places and had many experiences...Some were not pleasant, some dangerous, and others were enjoyable and memorable; I'm glad to have lived them though and that they've helped me design life my own way. I'm going to say, I'm adept at determining which paths to follow, journey's to take and why, and I'm proud of my ability to decisively set my feet upon those paths and walk them come what may dealing with adversities as they arise. Doing so has allowed me to create amazing results and experiences, and that makes for a better life.
I'm guilty though, of sometimes making the journeys I take more complicated than they need to be and sometimes I've failed to begin; the by-product of an over-active mind that has trouble shutting off for even the briefest of moments. Doubt, fear, uncertainty, stubbornness, hubris or other such unproductive feelings also play a part. Moving forward into and through any journey we must, or have decided to, make isn't ever going to get done if we don't begin though; it's at the beginning where all good (or bad) stories start - Which it will be is determined by the journey itself, and what we do along the way.
I'm no different than anyone else in that I have negative thoughts and feelings however, along the way, I've come to understand that they are not productive, or conducive to success. I'm far from blindly positive about everything, but I work hard to put negativity in its place, deny it, and to ensure it doesn't take hold of me. Through doing so, at those times when I've thrown roadblocks in my own way they don't remain for long. The process of achievement is simply steps on a path, the journey, and it doesn't matter what the destination is, one must take the first step, no matter how small, and then repeat it over and over. Sometimes that takes courage, other times just a little push is required.
I wrote a post about detachment, finding space between events and our reactions, and that's been an important element in my progression; the ability to step aside and see the roadblocks I place before me and the reasons why. Seeing them, acknowledging them, is the first requirement of dealing with them.
A habit takes around twenty one days to form. I'm not talking about a drug habit, I'm talking about creating good habits that can help one progress through their lives more effectively. Goal setting, self-evaluation, physical exercise, good diet, good sleep patterns, drinking plenty of water and eating less sugar...they're good habits. Along with those comes another habit that we must (should) all embrace and that's the habit of consistency and persistence...let's call it repetition.
Repeating the good habits we've created will carry us forward with more ease and enjoyment, and greater success, as we reach the destinations we set out for.
I've created the habit of detaching from the moment, situation or scenario and finding space to see it more clearly and in its entirety, so I'm better able to understand it. That's when I'm more able to see the roadblocks I'm putting in front of myself and know why, and then how to remove them so I can then take that first step, or the next step, in that particular journey. Repeat that over and over and I'm moving forward.
I know people that apply the same techniques as I do and attain great outcomes because of it, but what about you? Do you self-evaluate and understand when and how you're impeding your own progress forward? Do you purposely place roadblocks in front of yourself because a task or journey towards a result seems a little frightening, confronting or challenging? Maybe you fear failure so much you simply don't begin in the first place? How do you mitigate the effects upon your life when these things happen, do you even try? Feel free to comment as I'd love to hear your perspective.
Design and create your ideal life, don't live it by default; tomorrow isn't promised so be humble and kind - galenkp
