Source: from the Game. I am hidden behind the players showing schemes on the coach-board :D
Yesterday we had a general meeting in the wheelchair basketball team I am coaching because in the last weekend there has been a major misunderstanding that created polemic and evil attitude.
The topic of the argue was that there is not enough help within our group. And that is arguable but it is somehow true. On the other hand the request for help never arrived, so who is right and who is wrong?
In Italian we say that “The Dog with Two Masters dies starving” because both of the Masters will likely think that will be the other one feeding the dog.
So on one hand people were (potentially) waiting a request for help and on the other hand the request for help never arrived creating moodiness and bad tempers.
Seeing what was going on, one player even decided to stay at home and all the team missed the specific skills from that player.
As a coach, I did my best to motivate the present players, creating some specific playing schemes to value the players I had.
We lost 75-46 BUT all the players that took part to the game were extra-happy because they played well, they did their best and they actually played very well, considering that we lacked three players from the usual starting-five.

So on the 7 players I had, five of them played all the game and the sixth and seventh exchanged among themselves.
Among the five that played all the game, I had two players that are at their first wheelchair basketball year and another that usually plays a few minutes per game.
So, overall a great result. You can watch the game here. We are the Team in Red.

What was the problem?
Some people focused just upon their vision without thinking that some other perspectives could be possible.
I always try to get a 3D perspective, including other people perspective, understanding why some of them behave in such manner.
And here came the victim approach.
When people start (metaphorically) crying, because something did not go in the direction they hoped and then they react as kids to whom the ice-cream was just being denied.
We had some quiet talking. We decided that communication is the key and therefore for the incoming away-games a message will be spread in the Team-group asking for support to athletes and parents.
When we act like the offended ones because we expected something from someone…are we really sure that those people were aware of what we were expecting?
Or was it just an Egotic behaviour?
Are we doing what our Ego suggests us or are we doing what we are doing for the Greater Good, for the best profit for the Team?
Here are the best attitudes for a good Team-Work with quite an harmonious environment.
- Communication
- Abnegation
- Self-offering
- Listening attitude
- Observation
