Our rituals are so practical.
Yesterday we went to a lunch as part of a ritual being held for one of my very close friend's father-in-law's death, who died 10 days back. His son lives in United States and daughter ( my friend's wife) lives at Bangalore. Luckily my friend had come for a urgent work, staying in his house, and discovered him bleeding heavily and lying unconscious in the bath room for long time. The wash basin was broken and a small part of it stuck on his arm, was the cause of bleeding, but heavy bleeding made him unconscious most likely. My friend rushed him to hospital in the night, he was admitted, did well and discharged in a day. Next two days he was absolutely fine, but on the third day, just before going to hospital for a regular check up he did not feel well, and sat on the bed. Within few minutes, he fell on the bed and that was it...
Very few lucky people get such a royal death - no pain, no trouble to others, even his family members and I believe only good souls deserve such death. His son flew immediately and for last ten days, they were observing all the rituals at home - restricted to family members only.
On 11th day, a brahmin community is invited for a final ritual, eating prasad and blessing the family, enchanting some special slokas, offering the final good bye to the heavenly soul. The soul is believed to stay nearby, so for last ten days, the family used to leave foods at a corner of the building.
And the final ritual and prasad ( brought from temple) breaks all bonds recommending life to move on - a truth, that we have to accept.
The brahmins were given their due charge along with towels and a small copy of Bhagbad Gita - which teaches us the true meaning of life.
Close friends taking one last memory with them - but this is the reality of life. Ten days - after that the world moves on.
We have a saying, friends, near and dear will remember for 10 days, children will remember for a month, wife for six months - but then they have to move on to live their life. At times, it feels emotional, if you think about it, when you are alive, but this is the most bitter truth applicable to all of us. In the evening, a grand dinner was offered, including non-veg items, to break the sorrow - more to come on that.
