When I was a kid, I watched Alice in Wonderland as many kids, but it wasn't until I joined the crypto world that I understood what the title of this post meant.
Before the summer, we decided to start looking at properties in Portugal and we visited some during our summer vacation, and last Monday we signed for our new property, a piece of 7500m2 of land with a tiny agricultural house which I will try to make a home.
When I was thinking about the place, I was concerned about leaving valuable stuff at the tiny house for the long winter periods we will not be there. The Portuguese area where we have gotten the land is very safe compared to the metro area we live in in Spain, but still, I was slightly concerned, so I decided to look for a place to rent in the middle of the village to be able to leave our valuable stuff.
We identified the warehouse you see in the photo. It has a sliding steel door and a tiny pedestrian one. It was advertised in one of the real state agencies and I wanted to take a look to see if it was big enough to leave stuff there and maybe reach an agreement with the owner to rent it.
At the same time, one of the days we drove by one of the paths next to our new property and saw the one next door is also on sale. It is slightly bigger but the access is terrible, the path is very narrow and not in very good condition to drive with a regular car, but the place is full of olive trees, has two wells and a tiny house slightly bigger than ours. We could access through our property instead of using the public path.
We've been in Portugal for 5 days and finally signed the purchase of the land, but all of a sudden, I find myself considering an additional piece of land next door and a warehouse in the village. I feel so comfortable and relaxed when there, I would love to be comfortable as soon as possible. That is why I mention that I have fallen down the rabbit hole, but this time is not crypto, it is real.
The inside of the warehouse was a nice surprise. You can see some of the photos here. The tractor entrance has a concrete floor. All the walls are stone and are big enough to fit a car. My idea would be to connect to the electric grid and use it as a workshop on top of storage.
Then there is the other side, which has a sand floor and an ancient animal feeder on the front wall, you can see it covered by a piece of cartoon. The owner told us his father used to produce flour and had three horses to distribute it to the neighboring villages, so that area was used as a stable. The place was starting to fascinate me. You can see a bunch of wood on the left side wall. The ceiling is new, it was rebuilt just three years ago.
The surprises did not end there, there was a little exit to a patio you can see in the photo down here.
The old small doors were to keep rabbits, yes, those are ancient rabbit cages or "holes" 😂. You can appreciate the new ceiling in this photo. Then, turning around 180 degrees, you have an open patio with a chicken coop at the left, which a friend of the owner keeps.
All in all, I saw such a potential to the place we ended up making an offer and have closed an agreement to purchase it. The plan is to convert the place into a living space and a workshop, and have the tiny house in the land as an additional option. I am not going to tell you the price of the place, but honestly, it was very very low compared to anything similar you could find around our area.
We will see if we end up getting involved with the land next door or if we focus on what we have purchased already and purchase next March when we come back, but this place is getting me hooked every time I visit it.
