In a world of comforts and possessions, we often look around and interact with others and ourselves as if we were doing business or making a transaction.
What do I mean by this?
I will use a simple example to try to convey my idea. Imagine that you send a simple message to an acquaintance, or even a friend, whom you haven't seen in a while... or whom you just saw last week. What we assume right away is that, simply because we sent a message, we should receive a reply from the other side soon.
If we don't receive one, we immediately think that we are not being valued, or that we are being ignored... But why do we act this way?
Shouldn't we be more flexible with others?
All of this has arisen from a society that is extremely focused on hyper-productivity. Everything we do, think, and dream has to be as productive as ever. We should use the least amount of energy, spend as little time as possible, and if we can do it or perform it in conjunction with some other task or function, even better...
Or is it exactly the opposite?
In my humble opinion, it's quite the opposite. In human and interpersonal relationships, we should be more “slow.” We shouldn't act in the heat of the moment, or simply because we think that if we don't act quickly, we are failing the other person. Sometimes, we don't get the answer as quickly as we would like, but that should be seen as a vicissitude.
We should not, therefore, look at a payment that is made and expect to obtain the product or service after that transaction. That's not how it works. That's not how it should work. And we should “fight” so that it is never considered normal for it to work that way.
In many of my personal reflections that I have already shared here with the community, this theme has been addressed. I do so because I force myself to think about something that is causing so much damage to interpersonal, family, friendship, and even professional relationships.
Are we moving towards a less humane, less personalized, less organic, and more rational and transactional society?
And if that is the path we are taking, is there anything we can do, or avoid doing, so that this trajectory does not lead to self-sabotage and discontent with others and ourselves, due to an increase in ignorance, or the desire to discover others and ourselves?
We seek to have all the answers immediately, always just a question away. Nowadays, we can obtain practically all the information on a subject, no matter how complex it may be, but we are not prepared to make the effort to do the research ourselves, to follow the same path, or even to make mistakes in our initial responses.
Has imperfection ceased to be considered one of humanity's best characteristics? Are we trying to become something we will never be, and in doing so, lead to the complete abolition of our human intervention in some decision-making processes?
