When we think about happiness, we immediately think about what could make us happier, or make us happy. But this is actually a fallacy...
We are happy by default. What happens is that we create expectations of what life might bring or offer us.
If we are predefined in a state of happiness, instead of looking for the things that make us happy, or that we think would make us happier, we just have to REMOVE the things that make us unhappy, or less happy.
It seems very simple, doesn't it?
And perhaps, if we think about the process a little, it really is simple.
Things are not good or bad in themselves. Let me give you a small example: rain. Rain can be “good” and “bad.” It all depends on how we look at it.
If we are planning an outdoor party, a picnic, for example, for the coming weekend, with family and friends, to celebrate an important event, and we hear on the news that heavy showers are forecast for most of the day... That little piece of news completely changes our mood, and we see the rain as a setback, or a hindrance to our plans.
On the other hand, if we depend on agriculture and have an extensive field of fruit trees that are in their fruiting period, and it is very important that the trees in this crop have abundant water so that their fruits can grow larger and have the potential for good fruiting, the news of a week of rain ends up being the best news we could hear.
Rain, the same element, is not in itself good or bad. Only the context and individual perception of each situation and each individual determines this. But rain, in its essence, is just an element.
The emotional charge given to it is not a property of this phenomenon, but rather of the distance that will ultimately exist between our perception of what we think life should offer us and what it is actually giving us.
In other words, we are the ones who emotionally attribute meaning to a phenomenon that is not directed at us or anyone in particular, and we place ourselves at the center and take the stance that the event was beneficial or, on the other hand, harmful to us.
So let's make a list of the things that cause us anxiety and do something to remove them.
Nothing has an intrinsic value of happiness within itself.
It's not what life gives you, it's what life gives you compared to what you want life to give you!
Take this and think about all the situations or events in which you felt unhappy. It's not because life had given you something wrong, it's because life wasn't what you wanted it to be!
It's your choice how you react to each of these events.
Your perception of the event is your only real choice. Adjusting your perspectives in a realistic way will also help you avoid constant disappointment.
So we always have the power in our hands to look at the situation and make some adjustments to our own expectations, and to know how to adapt the way we face any setback that may suddenly appear or not.
Let's make a list of things to remove... Things to ignore. Things not to value so much. Let's make a list of things that do nothing to contribute to our peace of mind, and little by little... let's throw those things in the trash.
