Below, I share with the Hive community my critical review of a work by Cuban artist Jormay González.

The aesthetic of the uncanny, so effective in literary and cinematic horror, often uses inanimate objects with humanoid features – dolls, robots, mannequins – to provoke unease. Jormay González, however, distances himself from this explicit psychological terror. Her work, composed of everyday elements stripped of their context, becomes a scathing critique of the relationship between human beings and the world, exposing violence in its multiple forms: gender, family, ecological, and against nature itself.

A recurring element in two of his series is mutilation, represented by the arm of a doll, isolated, juxtaposed with other elements, or even fused with other bodies.

In "Dialogue between two figures" – the title I propose for the work – González presents a simple photograph: a religious image and a raised doll's arm share a table. The latent tension between both objects is palpable; Distance, not physical but symbolic and semantic, becomes the third actor in the composition.
En "Diálogo entre dos figuras" – título que propongo para la obra – González presenta una fotografía sencilla: una imagen religiosa y un brazo de muñeco alzado comparten una mesa. La tensión latente entre ambos objetos es palpable; la distancia, no física sino simbólica y semántica, se convierte en el tercer actor de la composición.

On the left, the larger religious image represents faith. On the right, the doll's arm evokes childhood, vulnerability, and possible reconciliation with a traumatic past. But beyond the representation of the mutilated body and childhood pain, the focus is on the raised arm. Is it a prayer addressed to yourself or to God?
A la izquierda, la imagen religiosa, de mayor tamaño, representa la fe. A la derecha, el brazo del muñeco evoca la infancia, la vulnerabilidad, y la posible reconciliación con un pasado traumático. Pero más allá de la representación del cuerpo mutilado y el dolor infantil, la atención se centra en el brazo alzado. ¿Es una plegaria dirigida a sí mismo o a Dios?
Pain and passion are condensed into an idealized image of Christ, nuanced by red. The symbols converge on a background of a deteriorated wall, with lines and shadows that guide the viewer's gaze. Christ looks at man at eye level, not from divine superiority, but as equals. This is the central message: two human creations, an aspiration and a wound, reflecting what is longed for and what has been lost.
El dolor y la pasión se condensan en una imagen idealizada de Cristo, matizada por el rojo. Los símbolos convergen sobre un fondo de pared deteriorada, con líneas y sombras que guían la mirada del espectador. Cristo mira al hombre a la altura de los ojos, no desde la superioridad divina, sino como iguales. Este es el mensaje central: dos creaciones humanas, una aspiración y una herida, reflejando lo que se anhela y lo que se ha perdido.
