Hello, join me on my journey through the Not All Crows Are Black exhibition, held as part of the 2025 edition of the May Pilgrimages.
Wandering around Cuba's largest youth art festival, I happened upon this exhibition. Little remains in my memory from the opening remarks, only that they were works by second-year students at the academy and little else about the general concept, which I didn't want to dwell on for too long, as I like the works to speak for themselves.
Works of various formats and styles populated the exhibition, with the common thread, at least in my eyes, of an intrinsic pain that the artists each tried to reflect in their own way, and which is so characteristic of contemporary art in Cuba.
More than an exhibition, the space was arguably an interactive art gallery where not only the performance was in motion, but also works in progress that the audience could join in, as well as the esoteric side of the card readings offered in a rich section of the exhibition.
The city of Holguín is currently awash with youth, and it is in such genuine art exhibitions as these that we can see that the future of creative activity on the island is in good hands.
