A few days ago, I was driving by a place and saw some mushrooms protruding from a tree branch. However, I passed by so fast that I could not identify the precise place where I had found them. I passed so fast that I even doubted what I had seen. A few days later, I returned to the place in question and found nothing on the tree branch. I thought that maybe it was an optical illusion since some branches had whitish spots corresponding to other fungi but flat.
Hace unos días atrás pasé por un lugar en automóvil y divisé unos hongos que sobresalían de la rama de un árbol. Sin embargo pasé tan rápido que no pude identificar con claridad cuál era el sitio preciso de hallazgo. En realidad pasé tan rápido que hasta dudé de lo que había visto. Días más tarde regresé al lugar en cuestión y no encontré nada en la rama de los árboles. Pensé que tal vez se trataba de una ilusión óptica ya que algunas ramas tenían manchas blanquecinas correspondientes a otros hongos pero planos.
For several days I kept that idea going around in my head, and I returned for the third time to that place. I took my time and observed each tree. As I circled the trunk of one of these trees, what a surprise...there were the mushrooms! Eureka, I had not dreamed it! However, they were only on one branch, and from far away you need a good angle to perceive them. You need to get close to the tree to appreciate them in all their splendor.
This branch is at least over 2 meters high. I am a small woman but when it comes to portraying the wonderful things that nature has nothing stops me.
In this area of the forest, it is forbidden to climb trees, so I had to use the zoom of my cell phone to get as close as possible and take some good pictures. A curious thing that happened to me was that while photographing the mushrooms many people passing by the place looked at me as if I was a strange species, but no one came closer to see what was really what had my full attention 🤣.
Por varios días quedé con esa idea dando vuelta en mi cabeza y regresé por tercera vez a ese lugar. Me tomé mi tiempo y observé cada árbol con cuidado. Al dar la vuelta alrededor del tronco de uno de estos árboles vaya sorpresa...allí estaban los hongos! Eureka no lo había soñado, sin embargo estaban solo en una rama y que desde lejos necesitas de un buen ángulo para percibirlos. Necesitas acercarte al árbol para poder apreciarlos en todo su esplendor.
Esta rama se encuentra al menos por encima de los 2 metros de altura. Yo soy una mujer pequeña pero cuando se trata de retratar las cosas maravillosas que tiene la naturaleza nada me detiene.
En esta zona del bosque está prohibido trepar en los árboles, así que tuve que hacer uso del zoom de mi celular para poder acercarme lo más posible y sacar unas buenas fotos. Algo curioso que me ocurrió fue que fotografiando los hongos mucha gente que transitaba por el lugar me miraba como si yo fuese una especie extraña, pero nadie se acercaba a ver qué era en realidad lo que tenía mi completa atención 🤣
Each pic revealed the curious shapes of this mushroom. At first, I thought it was a type of shelf mushroom-forming a kind of ladder, but there were also some with a bulging shape as if it were a potato attached to the branch. It was then that I wondered if they were two different species of mushrooms growing in the same place. However, I was wrong, and you will see why.
Cada fotografía iba develando las curiosas formas de este hongo. En un principio pensé que se trataba de un tipo de hongo de repisa formando una especie de escalerilla, pero también habían unos con forma abultada como si se tratara de una papa adherida a la rama. Fue ahí donde me surgió la duda si se trataba de dos especies de hongos diferentes creciendo en un mismo lugar. Sin embargo yo estaba equivocada y ya verán por qué.

The scientific name of this fungus is Fuscoporia torulosa. Until 2001 it was known as Phellinus torulosus, whose name came from the Greek word fellós (phell) which means cork, and the denomination "torulosus" is a Latin word equivalent to protuberances. Its name, then, would be something like "cork with protuberances" 😄 However, the new name accepted in 2001, was due to a phylogenetic study that caused the genus Phellinus to be classified into 5 new ones, being the genus Fuscoporia one of them, which includes 10 species. Incredible? However, if you look in the literature, there are still scientific studies that refer to this fungus as Phellinus torulosus.
The growth of this fungus on the tree branch is atypical because they usually grow at the foot of the trees, at the base of the trunk, but it seems that for nature, nothing is impossible. It is something we should learn from her!
Some photographs on the internet show this fungus as brown, but this is because it oxidizes on contact with leaves, soil, mosses, and lichens when they grow at the base of the tree. But when it grows in aerial conditions, it presents a beige color with some orange colorations.
El nombre científico de este hongo es Fuscoporia torulosa. Hasta el 2001 se le conocía como Phellinus torulosus cuyo nombre provenía de la palabra griega fellós (phell) que significa corcho y la denominación "torulosus" es una palabra latina que equivale a protuberancias. Su nombre, entonces, sería algo así como "corcho con protuberancias" 😄 Sin embargo la nueva denominación aceptada desde 2001, se debió a un estudio filogenético que provocó que el género Phellinus se clasificara en 5 nuevos, siendo el género Fuscoporia uno de ellos, la cual abarca 10 especies. Increíble? No obstante si buscas en la bibliografía, actualmente aún hay estudios científicos que se refieren a este hongo como Phellinus torulosus.
El crecimiento de este hongo en la rama del árbol es atípico porque generalmente crecen al pie de los árboles, en la base del tronco, pero parece que para la naturaleza nada es imposible. Esto es algo que debemos aprender de ella!
Algunas fotografías en internet muestran a este hongo de color marrón pero esto se debe a que se oxidan al contacto con hojas, tierra, musgos y líquenes cuando éstos crecen al pie del árbol. Pero cuando crece en condiciones aéreas presenta un color beige con algunas coloraciones naranjas.

The body of these fungi is made up of compounds resulting from the decomposition of tree lignin, as they belong to the lignin-decomposing fungi known as white-rot as well as the ones I found a few days ago, the Pycnoporus sanguineus.
Some in vitro studies show that wood-degrading enzyme activity in trees increases as humidity is high in the environment. Thus, the greatest proliferation and activity of these fungi is in humid forest areas with temperate temperatures. It is common to find them in countries with a Mediterranean climate. In America and Asia, they proliferate in intertropical zones.

El cuerpo de estos hongos está formado por los compuestos resultantes de la descomposición de la lignina de los árboles, ya que pertenecen a los hongos que descompnen la lignina conocidos como de pudrición blanca así como los que encontré hace unos días, el Pycnoporus sanguineus.
Algunos estudios in vitro demuestran que la actividad enzimática que degrada la madera de los árboles aumentan en la medida que la humedad es alta en el medio ambiente. Así que la mayor proliferación y actividad de estos hongos es en zonas boscosas húmedas de temperaturas templadas. Es común encontralos en países de clima mediterráneo. En América proliferan en las zonas intertropicales.
In this pic, you can see the same fungus, but it has an ovoid shape. This change in its shape has to do with its growth process. First, they are bulky, and then as it grows, it folds on themselves, leaving underneath that part that can be seen in the photo a porous appearance. As it grows its body stretches forming a flat fan giving the appearance of a ledge. When the fungus ages it looks like a flat, dry sheet. It is because it loses its moisture.
Although its appearance gives the sensation of softness (slightly velvety), its texture is hard which rules it out for edible uses. However, this fungus is also of industrial and pharmacological interest to humans.
In recent years, studies have focused on a substance produced by the fungus Fuscoporia torulosa. The orange color is due to a substance that is capable of transforming the sun's energy into light. Although this type of mushroom is not luminescent, it possesses a phenolic compound called hispidine which is the precursor of another compound responsible for the mushrooms glowing at night in the forest. Can you imagine this? If this mushroom had this property, the branch where they have grown would look like a real Christmas tree 🤣
Why am I talking about hispidine? Well, this is a substance that is responsible for protecting the fungus from the sun's rays as it has an antioxidant function. It has gained interest in the cosmetic industry, developing creams with sunscreen effects even tests are being conducted to treat acne with this substance.
En esta foto puedes apreciar el mismo hongo pero tiene forma ovoidal. Este cambio en sus formas tiene que ver con su proceso de crecimiento. Primero son abultados y luego en la medida que crece se pliega sobre sí, quedando por debajo esa parte que se observa en la foto con apariencia porosa. Cuando crece su cuerpo se estira formando un abanico plano dando la apariencia de repisa. Cuando el hongo envejece luce como una lámina plana y seca. Esto se debe a que pierde su humedad.
Aunque su apariencia da la sensación de suavidad (ligeramente aterciopelada) su textura es dura lo cual lo descarta para usos comestibles. No obstante este hongo también es de interés industrial y faramacológico para el hombre.
En los últimos años los estudios se han centrado en una sustancia que produce el hongo Fuscoporia torulosa. El color naranja que presenta se debe a una sustancia que es capaz de transformar la energía del sol y convertirla en luz. Aunque este tipo de hongo no es luminiscente, posee un compuesto fenólico llamado hispidina que es el precursor de otro compuesto responsable que los hongos brillen de noche en el bosque. Se imaginan esto? Si este hongo tuviese esa propiedad esa rama donde ellos han crecido paraecería un verdadero árbol de navidad 🤣
Por qué les hablo de la hispidina? Bueno, esta es una sustancia que se encarga de proteger al hongo de los rayos solares ya que tiene una función antioxidante. Esto ha cobrado interés en la industria cosmética desarrollando cremas con efecto bloqueador solar incluso se están realizando pruebas para tratar el acné con esta sustancia.
Although the genus Fuscoporia has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for its antiviral and antibacterial properties, today, it is known that Fuscoporia torulosa has more than 20 active substances, including amino acids, polysaccharides, alkaloids, flavonoids, vitamins, and minerals. However, the phenolic compounds of this fungus make it of pharmacological interest in the area of the food industry.
In the case of the food industry, its extracts are used as emulsion stabilizers, since they can absorb water or oil, thus preventing emulsions from separating into their two phases, the liquid and the oily. Likewise, their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties make their extracts natural food additives capable of prolonging the shelf life of some foods.
On the other hand, in the medicinal field, this fungus can be an important source of bioactive substances with potent antioxidant activity (oligomeric procyanidins), a necessary substrate for developing drugs for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Aunque el género Fuscoporia ha sido utilizada en la medicina tradicional china por sus propiedades antivíricas, antibacterianas, hoy se sabe que el Fuscoporia torulosa posee más de 20 sustancias activas donde destacan aminoácidos,polisacáridos, alcaloides, flavonoides, vitaminas y minerales. Sin embargo los compuestos fenólicos de este hongo lo hacen de interés farmacológico y en el área de la industria de alimentos.
En el caso de la industria de alimentos sus extractos se usan como estabilizantes de emulsiones, ya que tienen la capacidad de absorben agua o aceite, evitando así que las emulsiones se separen en sus dos fases, la líquida y la oleosa. Igualmente sus propiedades antioxidantes y antimicrobianas, convierten a sus extractos en aditivos alimentarios naturales capaces de prolongar la vida útil de algunos alimentos.
Por otro lado en el campo medicinal este hongo puede ser una importante fuente de sustancias bioactivas con potente actividad antioxidante (procianidinas oligoméricas) sustrato necesario para desarrollar fármacos para enfermedades neurodegrenerativas como el Alzheimer y autoinmunes como la artritis reumatoide.
I was pleasantly surprised by this mushroom. I never cease to admire nature as our provider of organisms with countless benefits. The important thing is to take care of every living being and respect it to maintain the ecological balance that our mother earth needs so much in these times.
Yo quedé gratamente sorprendida con este hongo. No dejo de admirar a la naruraleza como nuestra proveedora de organismos con infinidad de beneficios. Lo importante es cuidar a cada ser vivo y respetarlo para así mantener el equilibrio ecológico que tanto necesita en estos tiempos nuestra madre tierra.
