Slithering Slippery Salamanders

If there's one thing the little man, and frankly most kids, love doing is finding something new! The little man and I were out for a nice hike the other day through an area that we've driven by but haven't stopped in yet, and we found some really cool creatures, one of the best ones being all kinds of salamanders!

I'm not sure if I was as brave as he is at his age but the little man is very adventurous when it comes to picking up critters from the ground lol. He's always flipping rocks, logs and everything he can find to see what's lurking underneath to have fun with! That has given him all kinds of new treasures, and the latest one is a whole bunch of salamanders, more than I could count but easily over 30!

What was cool about it as well was that we were able to find multiple different species perhaps. There were some that had an orange back to them like the one you can see above and there were also others that were grey and some dark grey or black. I don't know if that signifies anything in particular for them but they were all fairly harmless and didn't get us sick or anything, just darted around and were energetic little things!

They were so fast and wanting to get away from us that some of them were crazy like this little fella lol he jumped off the little man's hand! He was like "peace out bitch!" and just jumped, it was funny. I was trying to be gentle with them and let them crawl on my hand or something and they indeed were crawling around for sure but not in the style I wanted, they obviously wanted to get as far away from us as they could. I'm glad that I snapped the photo just in time to watch the suicide attempt for this little dude lol.

Most of the time when we were finding them it was just one at a time. We had to flip logs to get to these salamanders because they love moisture and one of the best places to find moisture in an area of woods is to look under logs. When it rains, the logs lying on the ground horizontally soak up all kinds of water and underneath the logs becomes incredibly damp, perfect salamander territory!

One of the logs we flipped ended up having two under there! I don't know if these were bros but we can see that it was cool to have both species underneath it, the dark one and the orange one!

The salamanders were awesome indeed but one of the things that was pretty hard was to get them to stay still long enough to get good pictures of them! Lol. They were not interested in the shenanigans we had to offer sadly and they were too quick to get really good pictures. Thankfully we did manage to get a few where they are still but as you can see, they are determined to peace out on us at any means necessary. One of them even ditched it's tail to get away because that's where the little man ended up grabbing it. Funny stuff!

I think we will likely find more salamanders in the coming weeks as we will be going on a number of more hikes and now that the little man knows where they are, he's going to be hell bent on finding them every chance he gets lol
