Had I for one moment realised what I was dealing with I really don’t believe that I would have been quite so cavalier.
Let’s reverse one week. I noticed several species of birds all shouting and flying around the hedge in quite a hysteria so I called my husband, David, and authoritatively announced that there might be a snake.
We were at least 60 meters away and as we often have snakes of about half to one meter in length I wasn’t too concerned.
Move forward a week and there I was with the garage door fixing man and about three meters from a huge creeper when again the birds were in a fuss. I could see two weavers hovering just under the overhang of the shrub. Once more I showed my knowledge and told the man that perhaps there was a snake. “Yes, there is, he said, right there”.
*** Two meter long adult male Tree Snake***
I immediately called the snake catching lady from across the road and after about one and a half hours later, she and two young friends from snake catching managed to retrieve a 2-meter adult male Tree Snake (Boomslang), which had been only a very short distance from where I had my head in the bush searching.

He had shed his skin in the shrub and what a magnificent skin it was. He was let go in the local Game Park and now I will have half an eye out for him weekly when I walk there.
