Wasp Nest: A Sign of a Hard Winter?
I often walk this street with my dog in the mornings and evenings. When I walk with him, I usually focus on him or the nature at my eye level. But when I look up at the sky, I always feel like I should do it more often. The blue sky makes me feel expansive, and the birds give me a sense of freedom.
One day, as I looked up at the sky, I noticed the trees and a large hive on the electric line. Wow! It's a huge wasp nest, I guess. At first, I thought it might be garbage that had blown up and got stuck, but it wasn't. Unfortunately, I had forgotten my phone that day, so I couldn't take a picture. To tell the truth, I like bees, but I have a phobia of seeing the pentacle shapes of nests, so it's challenging for me to even think about them.
When I returned to that area the other day, the nest was still there, looking very stable, and it's still huge. I didn’t see any wasps around, though. I took photos this time.
Interestingly, I’ve noticed there are fewer wasps this year, including bees. Last year, I was really aware of the lack of bumblebees in my garden, and this year is the same. Some typical autumn flowers that should have started blooming in late summer haven’t even started yet.
My husband also noticed that there are no wasp nests on our property. We usually see a few under our roofs, sheds, or somewhere, but we haven’t seen any this year. Something is definitely changing.
Here's an interesting thought about wasp nests. My husband read in the Farmers’ Almanac that the height of a wasp nest could be an indicator of a harsh winter. They suggested that in addition to other signs of a hard winter, we could also consider the height of wasp nests as a natural indicator to watch.
Hmm... I saw the wasp nest way higher up than the typical roof height. Does this mean our winter will be super cold? Please, no! I’d rather wait and see.
True or not, our summer has already been very cool, and I definitely feel autumn settling in. I’m still hoping for an Indian summer, though.

スズメバチの巣が厳しい冬のサイン？
この道は朝晩よく犬の散歩で通る道です。犬を連れて歩いていると、目線が犬の高さや自分の目の高さくらいに集中しがちです。でも、空を見上げるといつも気持ちが良くなるので、もっと上を見上げなければと思います。青空は心を広げてくれますし、鳥を見ていると自由を感じます。
ある日、空を見上げると、木のそばの電線の上に大きなスズメバチの巣が目に飛び込んできました。わぁ！でっかい巣です。はじめは、ゴミかなんかが風で飛んで電線に引っかかってしまったのかと思ったほどです。ところが、何度見てもやはりスズメバチの巣です。残念ながらスマホを忘れたので、このときは写真におさめることができませんでした。
実は、私は蜂は好きですが、蜂の巣の五角形を想像すると恐怖を感じるので、こうやって巣を見つめるのはかなりのチャレンジです！
別の日にまた同じ道を歩いていると、スズメバチの巣はまだそこにありました。しっかりとしたどでかい巣で、確実にそこにあります。周りにスズメバチはいない様子です。今回は写真を撮りました。
おもしろいことに、今年は蜂やスズメバチをあまり見かけません。去年は、庭で見かけるミツバチの数が激減していることにすでに気がついていました。今年は秋の花々がまだ咲いていないです。たいてい夏の終わりから咲き始めるのですが…。
主人がそういえば庭でスズメバチの巣を見かけないということに気がつきました。通常は家の屋根、物置などあらゆるところにスズメバチの巣があります。今年はまだ見かけません。何かが確実に変化しているのを感じます。
スズメバチの巣について興味深い情報があります。主人がファーマーズ・アルマナックによると、スズメバチの巣の高さが厳しい冬であるかどうかを見極める目印になるという記事を読んだそうです。自然を見極めることでその年の冬の気候を予想する項目に、スズメバチの巣の高さを加えることを提案するとの情報です。
うーん…。私の見かけたスズメバチの巣は屋根なんか比ではないくらいかなり高い場所にあります。それは、今年の冬は極寒だというサインなのでしょうか？やめて〜！勘弁してほしいです。真実かどうかは確かめてみなければわかりませんが、今年の夏はすでに涼しくもう秋の感覚をひしひしと感じているのも事実です。まだ小春日和がやってくる希望を捨ててはいませんが…。
