Where is the Chipmunk?
There are many chipmunks near my house. Some of them have homes in the trees on my property. They make funny sounds and always seem busy collecting and hiding their food. Sometimes, I find their nuts in the wood shed, the shed, or even under my house.
When they go under my house, it becomes troublesome. I don't want them to lose their homes, but I also don't want them living under my house because they can cause damage. Whenever they go under, I can't ignore it. My husband is in charge of catching them and releasing them in a forest that’s a bit far from our house. If it's a mouse, unfortunately, they don't always survive. We try to save them as much as we can.
Fortunately, I haven't seen any under our house recently, but we still have to be careful just in case, especially with winter approaching.
Our wood was delivered, and we moved most of it to the woodshed. However, we still have a small amount of wood left on our driveway. I noticed someone running around the woodpile. Hmm... Who could it be? I guessed it was a chipmunk.
I knew it! While working near the window, I noticed something very small, brown, and fast running around out of the corner of my eye. There it is! Can you spot the chipmunk under the green sheet?
It froze for a while because it noticed that I had seen it. My dog also barked at it, sensing my energy.
After a while, it jumped out from under the sheet. I guess it felt safe because we didn't do anything. I plan to remove that wood soon, so I don't mind if they use the space under the sheet for now.
I couldn’t get close to it, but it ran away quickly when it noticed I was trying to take a photo. It looked very cute when it peeked out from under the sheet.

シマリスはどこでしょう？
家の周りにはたくさんのシマリスがいます。中には家の庭の木に住んでいるシマリスもいます。シマリスたちは面白い声を出しながらいつも忙しそうに食べ物を集めたり、それを貯蔵したりしています。ときどき、薪小屋や物置の中で彼らのどんぐりを見かけます。
家の下に入られると問題です。彼らの住処は奪いたくはないですが、家の下に入られるとダメージを与えてしまうので困りものです。家の下にいることに気がついたら無視はできません。主人が担当になって捕獲し、少し遠くの森の中へ逃がしてくれます。ネズミの場合は必ずしも生きて捕獲できるとは限りません。なるべく生きたまま逃してあげるようにしています。
このところは家の下には誰も入っていないようなのでいいのですが、冬が近づいてくるころには気をつける必要があります。
薪が届いてから、もうほとんどの薪は薪小屋に移動したのですが、まだ少しだけ私道に残っています。誰かさんが薪の束の周りを走り回っているのを見かけました。うーん…誰でしょうか？おそらくシマリスだと思います。
やっぱり！窓際で仕事をしていたとき、何か小さくて茶色いすばしっこいモノが動き回っているのを目の端で見ました。いた！緑のシートの下にシマリスが見えますか？
わたしが見つけたことに気づいたからか、しばらくの間かたまって動きません。私の異変に気がついた犬が吠えました。
わたしたちが何も攻撃しないことに安心したのか、しばらくするとぴょんっと飛び出してきました。もうじき薪をぜんぶ運ぶ予定なので、しばらくの間はシマリスがシートの下をうろちょろするのはよしとします。
すばしっこくてそばに近づくことはできなかったので、はっきりとした姿をカメラにおさめることができませんでした。緑のシートの下からぴょこんと顔を出している姿はとてもかわいらしかったです。
