Digging through some old photos I found these alligator photos taken on a long ago trip to Florida that I'm pretty sure I have never posted before.
These creatures are huge and can live for 50-80 years, if another alligator doesn't eat them while they are babies. They can grow to 15 feet long (4.6m) and weigh 1000 lbs. (453 kg)
Alligators live in the Southeastern states in the US, and since I live in the North I find them fascinating to see when I have visited Florida, Louisiana and North and South Carolina, but I can't get over the fact that I think they are really creepy. But even though I am not particularly fond of them I dislike the idea of them being killed to make shoes and purses.
Alligators have been on earth for 200 million years,
But the demand for hides and uncontrolled hunting almost wiped out the species and in the 1950s they were almost extinct. Today there are an estimated 5 million American alligators.
