An evening behind the sewing machine for me tonight. I am making a plucking - touch blanket, at least that's what we call it in my sewing lessons.
Together with the ladies from church, we make these blankets for on your or the patient’s lap, in this case for my bestie's mother, she is in a wheelchair. She has been admitted to a nursing home and has Alzheimer's.
She picks, pulls and fiddles with everything near, these days the buttons on her clothes and they get removed. Thats not really what is handy, and I told my friend what we make in class. So I offered to make her a beautiful pink one with everything to pick or touch. Such a special blanket present and so much fun to make with all the things I still have in the sewing box. Old ribbons and buttons, but also key rings.
Pictures are not in order, and I played with the placements of all the things I wanted on it.
It can also be a pillow with all kinds of different fabrics (possibly a piece of fabric from an old blouse/shirt of a loved one), buttons, straps, ribbons, rattle disc, a zipper and crinkle foil. Also for on Laos but also for on a couch. By feeling, fidgeting with this project, made at her own discretion, she can stimulate her remaining senses on the one hand, but it can also be soothing on the other hand. Soothing is nesseccary, she also has a baby born doll, who she tells a lot of stories too. The desease is horrible. It is heartbreaking but undeniable unfortunately. So the idea is not new, on Pinterest you can find loads of variations if you are interested. I think of my friends mum while I write this and when I sewed the last button on.
This idea was first and foremost especially intended for people with dementia or, like now, Alzheimer's. It’s something someone invented. But everyone knows it from the time you were a baby because most parents have a play mat, in the playpen or on the floor. There is also often a mobil above the bed so it is not so bad for people in the last stage of life.
The pillow has various names online such as tactile pillow, experience pillow, fidget pillow, but we at the sewing classes and in church call it a plucking blanket.
I loved the diy project , hope you liked the blog.
its appreciated and remember always focus on being creative
