It is a beautiful morning and I'm pleased to be sharing with you one of my works on my blog. But just before we delve into the business of the day, let's take a short moment to encourage and motivate ourselves. In Nigeria we have been observing public holiday since Friday for the celebration of Eid al-Adha and it continues tomorrow, Monday. These holidays are vital in our life as it gives us an ample time to celebrate and spend memorable moments with our families. We are a social being and we tend to be happy when we are in the midst of people we love and share common ideas. Once again, Happy Holidays!
In this post, I will be sharing with you a butterfly blouse and pant made from chiffon and silk fabrics respectively. I have shared some similar some days back but their is a difference in the color and pattern of the fabric. The previous one I shared is for the mother and this one is for the daughter - they want to rock a twinning outfit - amazing!
Materials Needed
- 2 yards chiffon fabric
- 3 yards Silk fabric
- Ā½ yard bias
- Matching thread
- Tailoring chalk
- Pin
Step by Step
Let's start by cutting the chiffon fabric that will be used for the butterfly top. The total width of the fabric is 45'.
To achieve the butterfly effect we shall be using 3" for width and 5" for depth and the length of the top is 30".
The next thing we will do is to fold the chiffon fabric into half, cut out the neckline and the length of the top (30").
Then, use your pressing iron to create a midpoint on the fabric by giving it a good press onfold.
When you are done with that you will open the fabric and start marking out your body measurements.
I used a bust measurement of 44" and a waist measurement of 40" and I added an additional 2" for ease - which translates to 46" and 42" respectively.
Be sure to mark these measurements on left and right side of the fabric and remember to use pins to hold it down for precision.
Now proceed to the sewing machine to use bias to finish the neckline neatly by using it to turn the neck.
Then use the sewing machine to sew the sides along the line that have been marked earlier.
One important and crucial step you must not omit is that you must ensure that the outer edge of the top is no less than 8" to 10". This is key in order to maintain the butterfly shape.
After the sewing process has been concluded, use your pressing iron to give the top a good press so as to give it a refined look.
However, be sure to put an eye on your pressing iron so that it won't burn your soft delicate fabric.
Your top is ready.
Now, let's start the process of making the pants.
For the pants we will be using the silk fabric. We will start by folding the fabric into half to enable us cut the both sides of the front piece together.
The measurements I used are waist (36"), hips (48"), lap (28"), crotch length (28"), knee length (20") and trouser length (36").
Mark all these measurements on the fabric using your tailoring chalk and cut out the front and back pieces.
Then you will cut a strip of fabric that is 4" wide and 40" long. This is going to create your zipper overlap panel. The 40" is a combination of your 36" waistband and an additional 4" for overlapping effects.
Now, join the left and right sides of the front piece. Repeat the same process for the left and right piece of the back too.
Once all the pieces are joined, attach the waistband to the waistline and join your zipper to the designated position of the pants. In my on case the zipper is on the side.
Now give it a finishing touch by pressing all the seams flat with your pressing iron. Remember that the fabric ia soft and fragile so be careful not to burn it.
Your pant is ready.
