I am a big fan of fingerless mittens. They keep my hands warm while leaving my fingers free to work. These are a design I quickly invented while testing out my small circular knitting machine.
I simply knit two tubes. When I bound off, I dropped two adjacent stitches on each tube to make an openwork area with room for a thumb. They also look a bit punk--might be good for a drummer?
