Hello great hivers, greetings to you creative needleworkers also ,
Over the week, i made a corset gown for a plus size friend, she wanted a dress but something that will give her a trimmed/slim look, after looking out for styles tiredlessly, we ended up choosing a corset gown, the challenging thing was that she had a big bust and most corset are mostly made with smaller cups and the bigger cups are not readily available in the markets here, so today, i will be sharing the process of how I made this beautiful, elegant and classy gown.
It actually took me a whole day to make this dress, few breaks in between though to attend to my babies.
Materials used are;
Lace fabric
Velvet fabric
Satin fabric
Skin net
Regiline boning
Fabric gum
Hemming gum
Warden
Air stay
At first, I drafted a corset pattern, using her measurements,
The front pattern drafted with the cups
The back also drafted,
I replicated the pattern on the velvet and satin fabric,
the velvet will serve as the main fabric, while the satin will be used as lining, to turn the main fabric.
Next I joined the front pattern piece together,
Also did same for the back,
Now it's time to work on the cup, the tasking part, i cut out the cup pattern on the velvet fabric, and double for the satin fabric, next I padded the cup with a warden,
joined it, then I sewed my regiline boning on it, this technique is called 'bust caging',
it helps give the bust a firm structure and the advantage of this technique is that it works for all bust size, remember when I said my friend had a big bust and couldn't get her readymade cup size, this technique comes to the rescue,
Next , i covered the caged bust with the velvet using an hemming gum,
Back to the main bodice, i created a loop in between the joined part I passed boning through to give the body structure too, it also helps in snatching the waist. Then I joined the cups together with the bodice
I cut out a yoke with the net fabric, for both front and back
Joined them together, using the measurement of my friend.
Now, it's time to cut out the down part of this gown, i used the lace fabric for it, Also cut out the satin which will be used to turn the lace,
I joined them together and made a V shaped cut in front, then I attached it to the upper already made corset part.
Then attached a basic and a puffy kind of sleeve to give it a more dramatic effect.
I love😍 the outcome, it fitted her perfectly and the trimmed look achieved.
Thank you for reading through to this point❤❤
