That's why, when I think about taking up this challenge of showing you something I make with my hands, with needles, even when I just have the project in my mind, I'm always thinking about the photographs. But it also happens to me that I understand the work as I go along, and some things change from one photo to another. I'll try to be organized in this post, see.

On one hand, my latest acquisition for creating was a sewing machine, which I've been learning a lot from, but I'll leave that for another post. Then there's everything related to murga, which is now more of a constant in my life, and I adapt it to everything I already do in my daily life. And to add to all this creative chaos, crochet, amigurumis, grannys, blankets, and some clothes. Well, here's today's story: in the middle of winter, I decided to take some yarn I bought out of season, with warm colors, soft and quite thick (this is usually expensive in my country, and I got it at a real bargain), and I got to work, while working a few hours, and in a fairly automatic mode, I knitted and knitted, assembled, disassembled, tested the texture, weighed the amount used, all the challenges that knitting requires, and tried to take notes on the decisions I made, to replicate them, for example, on the second sleeve. Here, “60 crochet, half gray” is not very useful; I needed to be exact with the number of stitches.

Por un lado, mi última adquisición para la creación fue una máquina de coser con quien vengo aprendiendo mucho a la par, y eso lo dejaré para otro post. Luego todo lo relacionado a la murga, que ya es más una constante en mi, y lo adapto a todas las cosas que ya hago en mi vida cotidiana. Y para sumarle a todo este caos creativo, crochet, amigurumis, grannys, mantas, y algo de ropa. Bueno, aqui la historia de hoy: en mitad del invierno decidí tomar unas lanas que compré fuera de temporada, con colores cálidos, suave y bastante gruesa (esto suele ser caro en mi país y las conseguí en una verdadera oferta) y puse manos a la obra, mientras trabajaba unas cuantas horas, y en un puesto bastante automático, tejía y tejía, armaba, desarmaba, probaba la textura, pesaba la cantidad usada, todos los desafíos que pruebe requerir, y tratando de llevar notas sobre cuáles decisiones tomé, para replicarlas por ejemplo, en la 2da manga. Aquí no vale mucho el “60 crochet, mitad gris” necesitaba ser exacta con la cantidad de puntos.

I started, let's see how my first attempts went blindly with the violet needle (it's number 10, 5 mm) and I started with a strip of chain stitches all in ecru. I had to get halfway through the sweater to realize that I wasn't going to have enough yarn, undo all the work, and do calculations to make it work, so I decided not to show all the advanced photos I had, and only a few for illustrative purposes. When I undid it, I decided to change needles and use the green one (4 mm) and also added about 15 stitches with the dark yarn to my calculation, specifically on the bottom side, so I could achieve even more lightness on top. It was also at that moment that I discovered that the sleeves would all be in mottled gray, otherwise I wouldn't have enough ecru for the calculation either. But the notes would start to become clearer, and I would also understand why each pattern is a different world, and even if you can vary some quantities or stitches voluntarily or not, you will get a different object each time.

Comencé, veamos como mis primeros intentos fueron ciegamente con la aguja violeta ( es la número 10 de 5mm) y comencé con una tira de cadenetas toda en color crudo. Tuve que llegar a medio suéter para darme cuenta que no me iba a alcanzar la lana, deshacer todo el trabajo y hacer cálculos para llegar, así que decidí no mostrar todas las fotos avanzadas que tenía, y solo algunas a modo ilustrativo. Al deshacer decidí cambiar de aguja y usar la verde (la de 4 mm) y también sumé a mi cálculo, unos 15 puntos con la lana oscura, específicamente del lado de abajo, así lograba aún más claridad arriba. También fue en ese momento donde descubrí que las mangas irían todas en color gris jaspeado, sino no me alcanzaría tampoco el crudo para el cálculo. Pero las anotaciones empezarían a ser cada vez más claras, y entender también porqué cada patrón es un mundo distinto, y aunque puedas variar de manera voluntaria o no, algunas cantidades o puntos, obtendrás un objeto distinto cada vez.
Once I had finished the back, I started on the two fronts. The idea is not to cover it completely, as that opening will also serve for the neck and the part that doesn't have a button. I think the most uncomfortable part of making two front pieces was that they are knitted on the same side, and I couldn't see how it was progressing as I went along. I continued until the two front pieces were finished and started on the sleeves. This was done between windy afternoons, movie nights, and some holiday that I don't remember, and I made significant progress very quickly.

Una vez que tuve terminada la espalda, comencé con los dos frentes, la idea es no cubrirlo por completo, ya que esa apertura servirá también para el cuello y la parte que no tiene botón. Creo que lo más incómodo de hacer dos partes del frente fue que se tejen para el mismo lado y no podía ver en el transcurso cómo iba avanzando. Continué hasta que las dos partes frontales estuvieron terminadas y comencé con las mangas, esto fue entre tardes de viento, noches de pelis y algún feriado que no recuerdo, y muy pronto avancé significativamente.
When everything began to take its final shape, all that remained was to make a border around the entire jacket, which serves as a collar and lapel. Although this is done in different ways depending on the style, since I used two different colors of wool, I thought it was a good opportunity to make the entire border with the darker color, taking advantage of the fact that the rest is so light that this little border can be more “dirty.”

Cuando todo empezó a tomar la forma final, restaba por hacer un borde en todo el saco, que cumpla la función de cuello y de solapa, si bien en distintos estilos esto se hace de diversas maneras, como yo usé dos colores distintos de lana, me pareció una buena oportunidad de hacer el borde completo con el color más oscuro, y aprovechar que el resto es tan clarito que puede ser más “ensuciable” este bordecito.
If there's one thing that made me fall in love with making winter clothes again, it's how quickly you can make progress. You might do four or five rounds and the amount of fabric is visually impressive. This tends to frustrate me a little when it comes to amigurumi, because although 5 rounds also change the doll a lot, you have to keep track of the number of stitches or decreases, and here it's more “straightforward” because everything stays the same until you reach a certain point. I don't know if I'm explaining myself well, but that feeling is glorious for me. Instead of requiring so much attention, it requires skill.

Si algo me volvió a enamorar de hacer ropa de invierno es la velocidad con la que se avanza, quizás haces 4 o 5 vueltas y la cantidad de tejido es visualmente abarcativa, esto suele frustrarme un poco cuando se trata de amigurumis, si bien en 5 vueltas también cambia mucho el muñeco, tienes que ir pendiente vuelta a vuelta de cumplir la cantidad de puntos, o disminuciones quizás, y aquí eso es más “recto” es ir todo igual hasta que llegues a tal punto. No sé si me explico bien, pero esa sensación es gloriosa para mi. En lugar de requerir tanta atención, requiere destreza.

By the time I finished, all that was left was to cut the excess threads from the inner knots. This part always makes me a little nervous because, in my experience, when I start wearing the garments, I always end up making adjustments right where the seams were. I don't trust my experience in this case, so I'm still learning. I tried it on and fell in love with it. The seams on the arms and sleeves were quite easy to do because the thick wool made it very clear where to place the stitches. I was so excited that I was already thinking about what clothes I was going to combine it with, and I could feel the warmth of all that wool on my back. Even though it's a short cardigan, it's super warm.

Para cuando lo terminé, solo me faltaba cortar los hilos sobrantes de los nudos interiores, esta parte siempre me da un poco de miedo porque al comenzar a usar las prendas, en mi experiencia, termino siempre por hacer arreglos justo donde estaban las uniones, no confío mucho en mi experiencia en ese caso, asique sigo aprendiendo. Me lo probé y estaba enamorada, las costuras de los brazos y las mangas fueron bastante sencillas de realizar porque al ser una lana gruesa, era visible y muy claro por dónde colocar el punto. Estaba tan emocionada que ya pensaba con qué ropa lo iba a combinar y podía sentir la calidez en todo ese peso de lana sobre mi espalda, aunque se trata de un cardigan corto, es super abrigado.
What it still needs, and I can't decide whether to add or not, are buttons. Since it was actually designed for milder weather, the idea is to be able to wear it open, and I understand that since it doesn't cover the entire back, it might not be as comfortable with buttons. I also want to mention that the seams, especially the underarm seam, turned out amazing. I'm surprised I managed to make it so even. In some ways, there's always room for improvement, and in others, you have to start accepting that experience makes for good practice.

Lo que aún hoy le falta y no me decido si poner o no, son botones, como en realidad ha sido pensado para momentos no tan extremos de frío, la idea es poder usarlo suelto y con botones entiendo que al no cubrir toda la espalda puede llegar a no ser tan cómodo. También contarles que las uniones, en especial la de la axila quedó increíble, me sorprende haber logrado que resulte parejo. En algún aspecto siempre se puede mejorar, y en otro, empezar a aceptar que la experiencia hace la buena práctica.
Espero que te haya gustado, porque seguramente pase un tiempo sin tejer, ya que tengo otros montones de proyectos por delante! Buen lunes a todas :)
