Hey needleworkers! My posts in this community have all been about crochet projects I’ve completed. So this is the first time I’m actually doing something different. Let’s talk about crochet hooks.
Crochet hooks are basically needles with a hooked end that are used to crochet. They are made with different materials. The common ones are the wooden hooks, the plastic hooks, and the steel hooks.
I’m curious. What makes a good crochet hook? Now, there’s a reason I’m asking this question.
Any Nigerian who started crocheting from childhood will be familiar with the Rose crochet hooks. They are steel hooks one can easily find in the markets, and you can get one for about a hundred and fifty naira. Now, these hooks do not come in the standard hook sizes. A size 6 is not the same size as a standard size 6. Also, the lower the size, the bigger the hook. So a size 1 is bigger than a size 3 and a size 3 is even bigger than a size 6. The sizing is just entirely different. And there are not a lot of sizes, especially big sizes. In fact, the hooks are actually small.
These Rose hooks are the ones I’d been using to crochet since forever till after my last project. Well, I got selected to join a crochet mentorship programme some weeks back and we were asked to choose a project we’d like to work on. After deciding on my project, I asked if I could use these Rose crochet hooks and I was directed to a post where these hooks were discussed — the shortcomings and why it’s limiting for someone serious about crochet. Then my mentor told me that it was not advisable but I could go on with it if I still wanted to.
After going through the post, I decided to just get standard crochet hooks although I was low on funds. This was mainly because I’d wanted to get them for quite a while. Why not do it now that I’m really learning crochet? Also, I wanted to see the difference between these standard hooks and the Rose hook, and wanted my project to come out looking as neat and as best as it could.
I chose the transparent plastic hooks because the vendor did not have the ones that are steel all through like the Rose hooks that I’m used to. I felt that it would be easier to handle them because the handles are not bulky like the steel ones with plastic handles.
I finally got my hooks delivered last week and I’ve begun my project. I realize that I don’t quite like the feel of plastic pulling out yarn from the stitches. Now, I don’t think the steel ones with the bulky handles would have been that bad. The sum of everything is that I should have just gotten those ones.
I noticed something else. I’m quite slow with these new hooks. The reason is due to the big heads of the hooks. If I make the stitches loose enough to easily pass through, my project would have bigger holes. So in trying to avoid that, I end up being slow as I try to pull my hook out of the stitches. I think the fact that it’s plastic adds to making it difficult.
When I noticed all these, I went to find my Rose hooks to check if the biggest size could work for my project because I’m working with two strands of yarn. It could actually, but I didn’t switch to the hook though.
The issue with these Rose hooks is that they don’t come in the standard sizes, they take time to build up due to the small head, and they scratch the yarn when crocheting due to the sharp curve.
Well, about the sizes, aside from occasions where one is following a pattern and needs to use a particular size or when one needs a really big size that isn’t available, it’s not really much of an issue. This is because you can always choose which of the hooks will work well with your project without knowing which size is equivalent to a particular standard size.
Concerning the hook scratching the yarn when crocheting, I discovered that it was so with only the small sizes. Size 6 does not have a sharp hook.
Therefore, with all the issues crochet professionals have with Rose hooks, there’s nothing really wrong with a size like 6 when it’s the right size for the yarn being used. That being said, I may not be crocheting my current project with it, but I’d definitely use it for another. It’s a perfectly cool hook.
Having said all that I have, I have a few questions for you:

¡Hola a los bordadores! Mis posts en esta comunidad han sido todos sobre proyectos de ganchillo que he completado. Así que esta es la primera vez que hago algo diferente. Vamos a hablar de las agujas de ganchillo.
Las agujas de ganchillo son básicamente agujas con un extremo en forma de gancho que se utilizan para hacer ganchillo. Se fabrican con diferentes materiales. Los más comunes son los ganchos de madera, los de plástico y los de acero.

Tengo curiosidad. ¿Qué hace un buen gancho de ganchillo? Hay una razón por la que hago esta pregunta.
Cualquier nigeriano que haya empezado a hacer ganchillo desde la infancia estará familiarizado con las agujas de ganchillo Rose. Son ganchos de acero que se pueden encontrar fácilmente en los mercados, y puedes conseguir uno por unos ciento cincuenta nairas. Ahora bien, estos ganchos no vienen en los tamaños de gancho estándar. Un tamaño 6 no es el mismo que un tamaño estándar 6. Además, cuanto menor es el tamaño, mayor es el anzuelo. Así que un tamaño 1 es más grande que un tamaño 3 y un tamaño 3 es aún más grande que un tamaño 6. El tallaje es totalmente diferente. Y no hay muchas tallas, especialmente las grandes. De hecho, los ganchos son realmente pequeños.
Estos ganchos Rose son los que he estado usando para hacer ganchillo desde siempre hasta después de mi último proyecto. Pues bien, hace unas semanas me seleccionaron para participar en un programa de tutoría de ganchillo y nos pidieron que eligiéramos un proyecto en el que nos gustaría trabajar. Después de decidir mi proyecto, pregunté si podía usar estas agujas de ganchillo Rose y me dirigieron a un post en el que se hablaba de estas agujas, de las deficiencias y de por qué son limitantes para alguien que se toma en serio el ganchillo. Entonces mi mentor me dijo que no era aconsejable pero que podía seguir con ello si todavía quería.
Después de repasar el post, decidí comprar sólo agujas de ganchillo estándar, aunque tenía pocos fondos. Esto se debió principalmente a que hacía tiempo que quería comprarlas. *Además, quería ver la diferencia entre estos ganchos estándar y el gancho Rose, y quería que mi proyecto saliera lo más limpio y mejor posible.
Elegí los ganchos de plástico transparente porque el vendedor no tenía los que son de acero en su totalidad como los ganchos Rose a los que estoy acostumbrada. Me pareció que sería más fácil manejarlos porque las asas no son voluminosas como las de acero con asas de plástico.
Por fin me llegaron mis ganchos la semana pasada y he empezado mi proyecto. Me he dado cuenta de que no me gusta del todo la sensación del plástico sacando hilo de los puntos. Ahora bien, no creo que los de acero con mangos voluminosos hubieran sido tan malos. La suma de todo es que debería haber comprado esos.
Me he dado cuenta de otra cosa. Soy bastante lento con estos nuevos ganchos. La razón se debe a las grandes cabezas de los ganchos. Si hago las puntadas lo suficientemente sueltas para que pasen fácilmente, mi proyecto tendría agujeros más grandes. Así que al tratar de evitar eso, termino siendo lenta al tratar de sacar el gancho de las puntadas. Creo que el hecho de que sea de plástico contribuye a dificultar la tarea.
Cuando me di cuenta de todo esto, fui a buscar mis ganchos Rose para comprobar si el tamaño más grande podría funcionar para mi proyecto, ya que estoy trabajando con dos hebras de hilo. De hecho, podría, pero no cambié al gancho sin embargo.
El problema de estos anzuelos Rose es que no vienen en los tamaños estándar, tardan en construirse debido a la pequeña cabeza, y arañan el hilo al tejer debido a la curva afilada.
En cuanto a los tamaños, aparte de las ocasiones en las que uno sigue un patrón y necesita usar un tamaño concreto o cuando uno necesita un tamaño realmente grande que no está disponible, no es realmente un gran problema. Esto se debe a que siempre puedes elegir cuál de los ganchos funcionará bien con tu proyecto sin saber qué tamaño es equivalente a un tamaño estándar en particular.
En cuanto a que el gancho raspe el hilo al hacer ganchillo, descubrí que sólo ocurría con los tamaños pequeños. El tamaño 6 no tiene un gancho afilado.
Por lo tanto, con todos los problemas que tienen los profesionales del ganchillo con los ganchos Rose, no hay nada malo en un tamaño como el 6 cuando es el adecuado para el hilo que se utiliza. Dicho esto, puede que no teja mi proyecto actual con ella, pero definitivamente la usaría para otro. Es un gancho perfectamente genial.
Habiendo dicho todo lo que tengo, tengo algunas preguntas para ti:
- ¿Qué es un buen gancho de ganchillo?
- ¿Hay alguna marca local de agujas de ganchillo en su país que no se considere "muy buena"?
- Qué tipo de anzuelo(s) le gusta utilizar?
- Por último, si estás familiarizado con los ganchos Rose, ¿qué opinas de ellos? Es posible que haya otras deficiencias en ellos que yo no conozca.
