Yesterday, a storm brought heavy rains, strong winds and flooded roads with fallen trees. The sky was gloomy and dark, and the power was out all day. Without phone signals, people were left wondering what to do, unable to go online.
While we waited for the electricity to return, I took the chance to enjoy a different experience: crafting in the soft, dim light. Without candles, I made myself an oil lamp.
The sound of the wind was whirling as I sat by the flickering lamp, holding my yarn and needle. I felt a sense of calm. The light wasn’t bright, but it was gentle and warm. The soft shadows created a peaceful, almost nostalgic feeling, taking me back to simpler days. I felt more focused, free from the distractions of technology, and filled with excitement and creativity
With no plan in mind, I let the lamp inspire me.
Thanks to a torch for lighting the photo, I was able to capture the process.
I crocheted a few flowers in a lacy design I just made up.
And I attached them together.
Then, I created a base for the bottom of the glass.
I attached green yarn to the flowers.
I twisted green yarn into stems.
The lamp came in handy for a bit of glue.
Then, I attached them to the bottom and placed the crocheted round over to support the stems.
I decided to add some leaves!
It's much better with leaves.
Now, it needs light.
Next, I cut a piece of cotton yarn/cord and placed it in the middle of the glass.
I added Himalayan salt.
Then, I poured sunflower oil just enough to cover the salt, leaving a small part of the cotton yarn sticking out.
Finally, I lit the wick.
My handmade lamp came to life.
I was happy with how it looked. It definitely brightened my day on such a dark one and fell asleep staring at it.
This morning, the light was still shining, which made me smile. The storm passed, and the day is bright and sunny.
Admiring it in the daytime!
Traditional skills are truly valuable, and there’s something magical about crafting in a moment free from technology. It’s a wonderful reminder to learn and appreciate these simple, life-enhancing abilities.
Wishing everyone a lovely Needleworking Monday
