Creating some turpial wings from scratch

Hola comunidad! espero que estén muy bien, por mi parte he decidido compartir algo que me lleno de mucha emoción hacer, aunque nunca me han gustado mucho las manualidades porque me considero muy mala en ello, en esta etapa de mi vida me ha tocado aprender un poco de todo, pues siendo mamá siempre hay que tener un exceso de imaginación. Recientemente en la escuela de mi hijo nos anunciaron que realizaran una fiesta de carnaval el día 17 de febrero, donde los niños deben ir disfrazados con materiales reusables, la maestra eligió el tema de disfraz para cada niño, pues harán esta fiesta con temática de Venezuela, en el caso de mi hijo le toco disfrazarse de turpial, un hermoso pájaro símbolo de Venezuela. Cuando lei ese mensaje de la maestra me emocione y me puse muy nerviosa al mismo tiempo, pues la verdad no sabía si podría con ese reto de hacer un disfraz y tampoco sabia por donde empezar, así que analice la situación y pensé que lo principal seria crear unas alas que representen los colores de este hermoso pájaro, con muchos nervios y pocas expectativas comencé a trabajar y para estas alas de turpial utilice los siguientes materiales:

Dos cajas de cereal
Silicon fio y caliente
Papel crepe blanco y negro
Papel lustrillo amarillo
Lápiz
Tijeras
Cordones elásticos
Foami amarillo y negro escarchado
bolsa de basura

I hope you are very well, for my part I have decided to share something that fills me with great emotion to do, although I have never really liked crafts because I consider myself very bad at it, at this stage of my life I have had to learn a little about everything, because being a mother is that, you always need to have an excess of imagination.
Recently at my son's school they announced that they would have a carnival party on February 17, where the children must dress up with reusable materials, the teacher chose the costume theme for each child, as they will have this party with a Venezuela theme In the case of my son, he had to dress up as a turpial, a beautiful bird symbol of Venezuela.
When I read that message from the teacher, I was excited and very nervous at the same time, because I really didn't know if I could handle that challenge of making a costume and I didn't know where to start either, so I analyzed the situation and thought that the main thing would be create some wings that represent the colors of this beautiful bird, with a lot of nerves and few expectations I started to work and for these turpial wings I used the following materials:

Two boxes of cereal
Silicon cold and hot
Black and white crepe paper
Yellow polish paper
Pencil
Scissors
Elastic laces
yellow and black GLITTER foami.
Garbage bag

Proceso/Process

Para realizar estas lindas alas me tome casi un día completo, comencé en la noche de ayer, retome hoy en la mañana y recién termine hoy en la tarde, la verdad fue algo muy difícil para mi pero puse mi mejor esfuerzo. Comencé ordenando todos mis materiales y realizando el boceto de la forma de la base de las alas sobre la caja de cereal, ya que la caja de cereal es muy fina hice la misma forma 4 veces para juntar cada pieza y hacerla mas gruesa y que pudiese soportar mucho mejor, para pegarlas mucho mejor y mas rápido, utilice silicón caliente.

To make these beautiful wings it took me almost a full day, I started last night, I resumed this morning and I just finished this afternoon, the truth was that it was very difficult for me but I did my best.
I started by organizing all my materials and sketching the shape of the base of the wings on the cereal box, since the cereal box is very thin I made the same shape 4 times to join each piece and make it thicker so that I could support much better, to glue it much better and faster, use hot silicone.

Después de pegar estas piezas y crear la base de las alas, debía colocar algo sobre ellas que me permitiese realizar la forma de las alas y al mismo tiempo que ayude como soporte al momento de pegar las “plumas” en mi caso elegí una bolsa de basura negra, pero perfectamente podría ser un papel de regalo u cualquier otro material que sea liviano, pegue la bolsa rodeando la base de las alas por separado.

After gluing these pieces and creating the base of the wings, I had to place something on it that would allow me to make the shape of the wings and at the same time help as a support when gluing the "feathers" in my case I chose a black garbage bag, but it could perfectly be a wrapping paper or any other material that is light, glue the bag around the base of the wings separately.

Recorte la bolsa de basura de ambos lados dándole una forma mas ovalada parecida a las alas, pero seguía sin convencerme el espacio que quedaba entre ambas alas, asi que decidí pegar un trozo de bolsa en el medio para cubrir ese espacio, ahora busque mi papel crepe negro y corte muchísimas plumas para pegarlas sobre la bolsa usando silicón frio, comencé desde abajo hacia arriba para que la forma de las plumas tuviese sentido.

I cut the garbage bag on both sides giving it a more oval shape similar to the wings, but I was still not convinced about the space between the two wings, so I decided to glue a piece of bag in the middle to cover that space, now look for my black crepe paper and cut lots of feathers to stick on the bag using cold silicone, I started from the bottom up so that the shape of the feathers made sense.

Poco a poco fui pegando cada pluma negra, hasta llegar a la mitad de las alas donde decidí intercalar con blanco, asi que realicé el mismo procedimiento con papel crepe blanco, y luego con papel lustrillo amarillo sobre el blanco, hasta rellenar por completo. Para que la parte interior de las alas no se viese tan vacío, decidí agregar plumas en ese lado, había hecho un plumaje más sencillo pero al final decidí ponerle mas plumas como lo había hecho atrás para que luciese mas bonito.

Little by little I was gluing each black feather, until I reached the middle of the wings where I decided to intersperse with white, so I did the same procedure with white crepe paper, and then with yellow polish paper on the white, until I filled it completely.
So that the inner part of the wings would not look so empty, I decided to add feathers on that side, I had made a simpler plumage but in the end I decided to add more feathers as I had done before to make it look more beautiful.

Corte muchísimas plumas de diferentes tamaños en blanco y las pegue en la parte de adentro, debajo de estas plumas blancas puse algunas plumas negras con foami de escarcha, aun debía cubrir la parte de la caja de cereal que seguían visibles, para ello utilice foami amarillo y recorte parecido a la forma de la caja de cereal, fue algo difícil porque el tamaño de la hoja de foami era muy pequeño a comparación del cartón, pero intente resolverlo. Pegué las piezas y con foami negro con escarcha cubrí la parte gruesa del medio donde está la caja de cereal.

I cut many white feathers of different sizes and glued them to the inside, under these white feathers I put some black feathers with glitter foam, I still had to cover the part of the cereal box that was still visible, for this I used yellow foam and cut out similar to the shape of the cereal box, it was a little difficult because the size of the foami sheet was very small compared to the cardboard, but I tried to figure it out.
I glued the pieces and with glitter black foam I covered the thick part in the middle where the cereal box is.

Finalmente utilice dos cuerdas elásticas pequeñas para pegarlas entre la base de cartón en el medio creando asi los orificios donde mi hijo podría meter sus bracitos y lucir sus alas.

Finally, I used two small elastic strings to stick them between the cardboard base in the middle, thus creating the holes where my son could put his little arms and show off his wings.

Solo quedaba probarle las alas, me puse muy nerviosa pero salió muy bien y el estaba emocionado de tenerlas puestas, ahora me falta realizarle un antifaz que parezca de ave, pero quede muy agotada para hacerla hoy asi que próximamente mostrare ese resultado también por acá, espero que les haya gustado y servido para darle algunas ideas si necesitan hacer algo parecido, a mi me ha encantando y me ha dado ideas incluso para hacer alas para mi.
