DIY: Salt shaker decorated with sakura tree. [ENG+ESP]

Hello friends of the community and craft lovers. Today I bring you a peculiar creation and I know that lately I say this a lot, but every time I am asked to embellish an object, I go a little head over heels on it. On this occasion, my dear mother showed me three white porcelain salt shakers, which are very, very ugly and, apart from being ugly, they are practically useless, because their design leaves much to be desired.

Hoy les traigo una creación peculiar y sé que últimamente digo esto mucho, pero es que cada vez que me piden embellecer un objeto, se me va un poco la cabeza en ello. En esta ocasión, mi querida madre me mostró tres saleros de porcelana blanca, los cuales están muy, pero muy feos y, aparte de feos, son prácticamente inservibles, pues su diseño deja mucho que desear.

The thing is that she decided that she was not going to use them and proposed me to decorate them with fomi to turn them into decorative objects, since their color and shape are the only good thing about them. Immediately, I got down to work and was about to make three identical replicas of the craft I will show you today, but my wife @yale95reyra convinced me to make only one and that she would use the other two in another craft that would combine with mine, thus forming a set of three pieces. In case she doesn't follow through, I'll have to be the one to decorate the other two.

La cuestión es que ella decidió que no los iba a usar y me propuso adornarlos con fomi para convertirlos en objetos decorativos, ya que su color y forma son lo único bueno de ellos. Inmediatamente, me puse manos a la obra y estuve a punto de hacer tres réplicas iguales de la manualidad que les mostraré hoy, pero mi esposa @yale95reyra me convenció de que hiciera uno solo y que ella utilizaría los otros dos en otra manualidad que combinara con la mía, formando así un set de tres piezas. En caso de que no cumpla lo prometido, tendré que ser yo quien decore los otros dos.

Step by step // Paso a paso

1️⃣ I started by cutting out the silhouette of the green fomi grass using a metal cutting die. I then placed each fomi herb side by side, bordering the entire base of the salt shaker. Since this grass design had wide tips on the sides, I had to cross them at the top end so there would be no gaps between them at the bottom.

Empecé cortando la silueta de la hierba en fomi verde utilizando un troquel metálico de corte. Luego coloqué cada hierba de fomi una al lado de la otra, bordeando toda la base del salero. Como este diseño de hierba tenía puntas anchas a los lados, tuve que cruzarlas en el extremo superior para que no quedasen espacios entre ellas en la parte de abajo.

2️⃣ After gluing all the grass, I used another metal cutting die to cut out the pieces that would make up the fence. When I had all the pieces ready, I glued them one by one around the center of the saltbox, just above the grass, but not touching it.

Luego de pegar toda la hierba, utilicé otro troquel de corte metálico para recortar las piezas que conformarán el cercado. Cuando tuve todas las piezas listas, las fui pegando una a una alrededor de la parte central del salero, justo por encima de la hierba, pero sin que hicieran contacto con ella.

3️⃣ Once I had the base ready, I started working on the tree trunk, which I made with RJ45 wire. I used tweezers to twist the wire tightly and shape the trunk. I then used green floral tape to wrap around both the trunk and the branches, and then glued it on top of the salt shaker, inserting the bottom of the wire into the hole in the salt shaker.

Una vez tuve la base lista, me puse a trabajar en el tronco del árbol, el cual hice con alambre RJ45. Utilicé unas pinzas para torcer bien el alambre y darle forma al tronco. Luego utilicé cinta floral verde para envolver tanto el tronco como las ramas y, seguidamente, lo pegué encima del salero, insertando la parte inferior del alambre en el orificio de este.

4️⃣ To decorate the tree I used fuchsia pink frosted fomi. I cut it into two different flower shapes. The large flowers will be glued on the end of each branch and the small flowers in between. Before gluing the flowers to the tree, I thermoformed them to give them a curved look and, with a white marker, I painted the center and a stripe on each petal.

Para decorar el árbol empleé fomi escarchado rosado fucsia. Dicho fomi lo recorté en dos formas de flores distintas. Las flores grandes irán pegadas en el extremo de cada rama y las flores pequeñas en el intermedio. Antes de pegar las flores al árbol, las termoformé para darle un aspecto encorvado y, con un marcador blanco, les pinté el centro y una raya a cada pétalo.

5️⃣ After gluing the flowers, large and small flowers, I use the tweezers to rearrange the branches so that they are slightly tilted towards the front. To finish, I used some acrylic glue and around the trunk I created a small mosaic of green semi-pearls.

Luego de pegar las flores, las flores grandes y las pequeñas, utilizo la pinza para reacomodar las ramas de manera tal que estén levemente inclinadas hacia la parte delantera. Para finalizar, utilicé un poco de pegamento acrílico y alrededor del tronco creé un pequeño mosaico de semiperlas verdes.
