I am new to this community and Hive in general. You can read about me in my introduction post.
I chose a little decoupage project for my first post in this community. I had been researching a lot about this technique because the results seem quite fascinating.
Decoupage is a French word which means,
the art of decorating objects with paper cut-outs. src
I had an empty can of Ensure which I wanted to upcycle and utilize in my vanity. But when I learned about decoupage, I thought to try it out.
Now the real homework was to choose the prints. I only saw florals which I wasn't too keen to use.
After sometime the Potterhead in me got awaken and all I wanted was something HP related for the cutouts.
I finalized the picture of four houses of Hogwarts. Next step was to take the printouts.
Main Process
The items required for the decoupage were:
- Empty Can
- Cut-outs
- Primer/ White Paint
- Modpodge
Everything was easily available except the Modpodge.
What is Modpodge?
It is kind of glue which is used to stick the cutouts on the surface of any object that you want to upcycle.
I didn't have modpodge at home so I also DIY-ed it.
How to prepare?
We only need two ingredients for preparing a glue like Modpodge.
- German Glue / Fevicol
- Water
Mix both of these together in 2:1.
Prepare the Can
Prepare the can with an oil-based primer or simply use White paint. I have acrylic white paint as well as oil white paint. I used acrylic becuase it dries faster where oil paint takes ages.
Though the latter is a more suitable choice for woods,metals or rust-prone items.

Stick the Cutouts
After the paint is completely dry then it's time for the cutouts to go on it.
Take a flat paint brush and apply the glue mixture on the can where you want to stick the cutout.
Then slowly place the cutout and press it, make sure there are no creases and it's even.
Stick the other cutouts the same way.
When it's done then apply the glue over the cutouts as well. It won't be visible so don't worry. Only the finishing will look better.

The can will be a little sticky for some time but the glue will dry soon and the decoupage will be done.
I was a little rough with the edges but you can hide any imperfections. I painted a black outline on the edges to add more definition.
Black outline wasn't necessary but I think it went with the prints and the art looks wholesome.
Here are the final pictures of the end-product. I tried to pair it up with one of Harry Potter book.
Tell me, how do you like it? I am open to any suggestions. I am still figuring where to put it. Maybe I shall start preparing an exclusive HP art shelf, probably with decoupage. 😀
FYI, decoupage can be done on wood and possibly on any surface. I am very excited to collect more exciting prints and transform them all on different objects.
