ENG / ESP Drawing a Kingfisher with pastel plaster. / Dibujando un Martín Pescador con yeso pastel.

Painting, drawing, coloring, any of these artistic expressions can be for some people just a hobby. For others it can be the most inspiring and important thing in their lives. In my case, it is a hobby, one of my favorites by the way, and one of the ones that gives me the most satisfaction.

Pintar, dibujar, colorear, cualquiera de éstas expresiones artísticas pueden ser para algunos solo una afición. Para otros puede ser lo más inspirador e importante de sus vidas. En mi caso, es un pasatiempo, de mis favoritos por cierto, y uno de los que más satisfacción me da.

I like to try new materials. I couldn't tell you about technique, since I'm just an amateur. But every time I try something new I get hooked for a while. So far I have used watercolors, charcoal, pencils, and now gesso pastels. The latter is simply fascinating and I've used it to draw faces; so it was time to do something else and I went for this colorful bird known as the Martin Pescador.

Me gusta probar nuevos materiales. No podría hablarles de técnica, ya que solo soy una aficionada. Pero cada vez que pruebo algo nuevo me quedo enganchada por un tiempo. Hasta ahora he usado acuarelas, carboncillo, lápices, y ahora yeso pastel. Este último es sencillamente fascinante y lo he usado para dibujar rostros; así que llegó el momento de hacer algo más y me incliné por esta vistosa ave conocida como Martin Pescador.

Its vibrant turquoise blue and orange colors, combined with some red and brown, simply captivated me. The texture of the feathers, that is to say, to achieve the velvety effect and at the same time with volume and depth was a challenge, that to be honest, I consider I did not achieve it at all.

Sus vibrantes colores azul turquesa y naranja, combinados con algo de rojo y café, simplemente me cautivaron. La textura de las plumas, es decir, conseguir el efecto aterciopelado y al mismo tiempo con volumen y profundidad fue un reto, que siendo honesta, considero no haberlo conseguido del todo.

In this drawing I used pastel plaster, one in more intense tones and some as its name indicates: “pastels”. I also used some colored pencils, only in some lines that require precision and a brush to blur. I also used an HB pencil.

En este dibujo utilicé yeso pastel, uno en tonos más intensos y unos tal como su nombre lo indica: “pasteles”. También utilicé algunos lápices de colores, solo en algunas líneas que requieren precisión y un pincel para difuminar. Además un lápiz HB.

I started with the thin strokes of the bird's silhouette. For this I used the HB pencil. Then I applied as a base for the orange, a brown color, thinking that it would give me a little more darkness, however, when I applied the orange, it was completely covered. I used the brush to smooth and blend the surface.

Empecé con los trazos delgados de la silueta del ave. Para ello utilicé el lápiz HB. Luego apliqué como base para el naranja, un color café, pensando que me daría un poco más de oscuridad, sin embargo, al aplicar el naranja, éste quedó totalmente cubierto. Utilicé el pincel para suavizar y difuminar la superficie.

I then applied more orange on the edge with some red to outline the edge of the silhouette. I also applied brown on some contour lines to give depth. I similarly applied brown on the beak and eye contour.

Luego apliqué más naranja en el borde con algo de rojo para delimitar el borde de la silueta. También apliqué café en algunas líneas de contorno para dar profundidad. De igual manera apliqué café en el pico y el contorno de los ojos.

I continued to apply black under and over the beak. This is a part that I really like and although it requires precision so as not to contaminate the rest of the drawing with black, the effect achieved is totally captivating. It looks fantastic, in my opinion.

Continué aplicando negro debajo del pico y sobre él. Está es una parte que me gusta mucho y aunque requiere precisión para no contaminar de negro el resto del dibujo, el efecto que se consigue es totalmente cautivador. Se ve fantástico, en mi opinión.

I continued applying the blue. I didn't have a turquoise blue, so I applied some green so as not to have such a flat color. I also worked details with the blue color to give a feather effect. In the same way I applied black color on the edge of the blue color to form the wings and tail feathers.

Seguí aplicando el azul. No tenía un azul turquesa, entonces apliqué algo de verde para no tener un color tan plano. También trabajé detalles con el color azul para dar efecto de pluma. De igual manera apliqué color negro en el borde del color azul para formar las alas y las plumas de la cola.

Finally I applied green and black on the rest of the paper to give a natural looking background. Maybe it was not the best decision, or maybe the application technique, but it left me a lesson and that is that I should be more cautious when making the background because it will definitely have an important effect on the drawing itself. Finalmente apliqué color verde y negro en el resto del papel para dar un fondo de aspecto natural. Quizás no fue la mejor decisión, o tal vez la técnica de aplicación, pero me dejó una enseñanza y es que debo ir con más precaución al momento de realizar el fondo porque definitivamente tendrá un efecto importante en el dibujo propiamente dicho.
