Les Miserables, a classic we should all watch. In the version of Victor Hugo's novel published in 1862, actress Anne Hathaway captivates us with her impressive and moving performance.

Los Miserables, un clásico que todos deberíamos mirar. En la versión de la novela de Victor Hugo publicada en el año 1862, la actriz Anne Hathaway nos cautiva con su impresionante y conmovedora actuación.

I saw the movie many years ago when it was just coming out and was simply hooked on this character named Fantine. I was so inspired by her acculturation that to this day I have not forgotten it and she has become one of my favorite actresses.

Vi la película hace muchos años, cuando apenas salía y quedé simplemente enganchada a este personaje de nombre Fantine. Fue tanto lo que me inspiró su aculturación que hasta ahora no lo olvido y se ha convertido en una de mis actrices favoritas.

Today I took inspiration from Fantine's character to make this face. I am practicing drawing faces with pastel plaster and I thought I should try to draw Fantine.

Hoy tomé inspiración en el personaje de Fantine para hacer este rostro. Estoy practicando dibujar rostros con yeso pastel y me pareció que debía intentar dibujar a Fantine.

I started with a pencil sketch with faint lines. At first the face I was doing reminded me more of Penelope Cruz. It made me laugh and I thought that if my intention was to paint Cruz, I would end up with Angelina Jolie's face. Perhaps I used this as a premise for my next drawing.

Empecé con un boceto a lápiz con líneas tenues. Al principio el rostro que estaba haciendo me recordaba más a Penélope Cruz. Me daba risa y pensaba que si mi intención fuera pintar a Cruz, terminaría con el rostro de Angelina Jolie. Quizás utilicé esto como premisa para mí próximo dibujo.

Then I applied pink, skin and a bit of brown since her skin is quite pale. I applied color on the lips, eyes and eyebrows and immediately followed with the blending technique. Here we can use whatever we feel comfortable with. I usually use my fingers and because I feel that the colors adhere more and then with a soft bristle brush.

Luego apliqué rosa, piel y un poco de café ya que si piel es bastante pálida. Apliqué color en los labios, ojos y cejas y de inmediato seguí con la técnica de difuminado. Aquí podemos usar lo que nos resulte más cómodo. Yo suelo usar los dedos y porque siento que se adhieren más los colores y luego con un pincel de cerdas suaves.

The blurring work is essential when using pastel plaster. I am just getting to know the material, but I have realized that we can soften with the brush so as not to have marked lines, unless it is the effect we are looking for, as in the case of the hair and eyebrows, where I applied an ocher tone and then used black and brown in lines that go in different directions, which gives it a messy look.

El trabajo de difuminado es esencial cuando usamos yeso pastel. Apenas estoy conociendo el material, pero me he dado cuenta que podemos suavizar con el pincel para no tener líneas marcadas, a menos que sea el efecto que se busca, como el caso del pelo y cejas, dónde apliqué un tono ocre para luego usar el negro y café en líneas que van en diferentes direcciones, lo que le da un aspecto desordenado.

To make small details like in the eyes and lips, the pastel plaster is not very appropriate, at least the ones I have don't help me much because they are thick and those thin lines like eyelashes are not easy to do with plasters. I thought about using colors, but I didn't like the finish, since they are made of wax, there is a shine that doesn't blend with the other colors and personally I wasn't convinced.

Para hacer detalles pequeños como en los ojos y labios, el yeso pastel no es muy apropiado, al menos los que yo tengo no me ayudan mucho pues son gruesos y esas líneas delgadas como pestañas no son fáciles de hacer con los yesos. Pensé en usar colores, pero no me gustó el acabado, ya que al ser éstos de cera, se ve un brillo que no se funde con los demás colores y en lo personal no me convenció.

The nose was the most difficult part and I was not convinced. Capturing the essence of a character in a realistic drawing is a challenge. I know it's not the best I can do, although I'm still advancing in my process of learning to paint faces, I think it's a part of painting that requires a lot of practice. The good thing is that I like challenges, I like to paint and I have the freedom to choose my favorite characters, so it's a privilege to be able to practice my drawings. I hope you like it. La nariz fue la parte más difícil y no termina de convencerme. Captar la esencia de un personaje en un dibujo realista, es todo un reto. Sé que no es lo mejor que puedo hacer, aunque sigo avanzando en mi proceso de aprender a pintar rostros, creo que es una parte de la pintura que requiere de mucha práctica. Lo bueno es que me gustan los retos, me gusta pintar y tengo la libertad de escoger mis personajes favoritos, así que es un privilegio poder practicar mis dibujos. Espero que les guste. Saludos.
