DIY Yard Maintenance
We are reforming, maintaining, and reinstalling some of the old features of our house year by year. Maintaining a house is not easy. It's a never-ending project, as you know. However, if we ignore problems, they only get worse and can eventually become impossible to fix.
My husband is learning new DIY skills every year. In our area, hiring professional services is always quite pricey, so many people try to fix things themselves as much as possible. The short summer is the perfect time for DIY projects here. I’ve noticed that our neighbours are also constantly renovating their homes these days.
This spring, we finished the first round of tearing out the old, rotten wood deck in our yard. And this year is also the right time to order a pump service for our septic tank, since the last one was almost three years ago. At that time, we realized we needed to redo the cap on the septic tank. Otherwise, we’d have to dig up the area every three years. We didn’t want to damage the grass repeatedly, so we decided to install a new cap.
This will be the last time we dig in this area. After installing the new cap, we won’t need to dig anymore. The technician told us that more and more people are switching to this type of cap instead of digging each time. He said it also makes his job easier.
The old lid had almost reached the end of its life. It was cracked, so this was the perfect time to replace it. We reused the stone lid in our garden.
This is the new septic tank cap. Now, instead of digging, we can simply open it from above. What a relief! I found some records about previous septic tank issues in our house documents. The former owner had also repaired this area, but instead of installing a new cap, they reused the old stone lid.
The service technician was very friendly and professional. He finished everything in just 20 minutes. I had expected the job to take longer, but he quickly disappeared in his cool truck with the logo "We’re there when you need us." Now we won’t need to worry about it again for another three years.
Meanwhile, our dog is so happy exploring the backyard. He especially loves checking the blueberry patch. What’s he looking for?
Oh, look at his mouth! He’s hiding something… I guess it’s just grass. He’s not very good at hiding it. Clearly, he’s got something tucked away in there.
After eating it, he pretended nothing had happened. That’s his fake innocent face. But his eyes are clearly worried, as if he hopes I didn’t notice…
Anyway, we have a few more yard DIY projects lined up for the summer. We'll take it one step at a time!

庭のメンテナンスDIY
毎年少しずつ、家のリフォーム、メンテナンス、古いものから新しいものへの入れ替えを行なっています。これはアルアルかもしれませんが、家に住む限り永遠に続くプロジェクトのように感じます。でも、もし問題と向き合わずに無視をし続けると、結局修理不可能になってしまい、もっと大変なことになってしまいかねません。
そのおかげか、主人は毎年DIYのスキルが上達してきている様子です。この地域でプロを雇って何かをしてもらうと、かなり高額な費用がかかります。ですから、みなさん自分でできるだけ作業している人たちが多いです。短い夏の間、近所のそこらじゅうでDIYをしている音が聞こえてきます。
今春、庭の古い腐ったウッドデッキを撤去の作業はほぼ終わりました。今年はちょうどセプティックタンク（腐敗槽）を開封して中の汚物をポンプで排出してもらう時期です。前回は約３年前にこの作業を終えました。その時、セプティックタンクの蓋の部分がかなり寿命が近づいていることに気がつきました。蓋をなんとかしなければ３年ごとに毎回土を掘り起こさなければなりません。地面や草を毎回毎回掘り起こしてダメージを与えることはしたくなかったので、今回新しい蓋を取り付けることに決めました。
今回で、土を掘り起こす作業は最後になります。新しい蓋を取り付けたので、もう地面にダメージを与えなくて済みます。今回セプティックタンクの中身を吸い上げにきてくれた作業員の方が、この辺りでは家と同じく新しい蓋のスタイルへと移行してきている家庭がどんどん増えているとおっしゃっていました。いちいち掘り起こさなくても良いので、作業が楽になり助かるそうです。
古い石の蓋はこの通り寿命を迎えました。ところどころヒビが入っていて、今回完璧なタイミングだったと思います。この石は砕いて庭の別の場所に再利用しました。
これが新しい蓋です。次回からは土を掘り起こさずに、蓋を開けるだけです。ホッとひと安心しました！以前のオーナーさんの記録の中から、セプティックタンクに問題があって修理した記録がありました。そのときに、この蓋へと移行せずに、古い傷んだ石の蓋のままにしたのだと思います。
作業員の方はとてもテキパキと汲み取り作業を終えてくれました。おそらく２０分ほどの早技で汚物を汲みあげ、「みなさんが必要なときにいつでもお手伝いいたします」と書かれたロゴが書かれた大きなトラックに乗って颯爽と帰っていきました。これであと３年間は汲み取り作業をしなくてすみます。
一方、私の愛犬は裏庭の探索にいそしんでいます。特にブルーベリーの木をチェックするのが好きなようです。何を見ているのでしょうか？
あら、口元を見てください！何かを隠しているようです…。おそらく草でしょう。彼は隠し事をするのが下手くそです。確実に口の中に何かを含んでいるのがバレバレです。
飲み込んだ後は、何事もなかったようにしています。これは、ぼくは無罪ですの顔です。どうか私に気づかれませんようにと願っている彼の目がそれを物語っています。
ところで、まだ今年の夏のDIYプロジェクトはいくつか残っています。少しずつ片付けていきます。
