Fobias. Un artilugio mental [ESP-ENG]

Hoy me uno a la iniciativa de @charjaim, las fobias, por cierto un tema nada agradable de abordar porque escribir sobre aquello que nos produce asco o miedo queramos o no nos ubica en ese territorio, dándole espacio a la mente y al cuerpo para que cumplan su función, pero así es Esta vida nuestra y a, veces nos gusta procuramos esa dosis de adrenalina. Así que aquí estoy.

En estos días mi hija me dice que quiere que vayamos al cine a ver una película de terror, que acaba de estrenarse, y que según la crítica del género es la mejor de la temporada, mi respuesta fue un ¡NO!, alto y fuerte , por mucho que insista y que yo quiera complacerla en estos días que estoy pasando con ella, no voy a ir, pues me desagrada esa emoción, no me veo procurándola.

Las fobias son otro nivel y tienen poco de acción voluntaria, me parece que son artilugios de la mente para jugarnos malas pasadas y digo esto porque una de las maneras que recomiendan para superarlas es enfrentarte al objeto de de tu terror con lo cual intentaremos convencer al cerebro de que no pasa nada, que tú puedes afrontarlo y salir airoso, de hecho habrá mucha gente que lo ha logrado, otras tantas que están en el proceso y un tercer grupo que ni lo intenta.

Yo, le tengo fobia a las cucarachas, esa desagradable mezcla de miedo y asco y mientras tenga a alguien cerca que se pueda hacerse uncargo del asunto ( mi esposo), me libero del enfrentamiento porque de una cosa si estoy segura, no la dejo escapar porque el solo pensar que me esta acechando, no me deja dormir ni trabajar, eso sí nada de golpe, lo mio es veneno letal con ellas, un “baigonazo” y listo.

Está valentía no salió de la nada, les cuento, hace años leí un cuento de Julio Cortázar, en el relataba algo desagradable relacionado con este tipo de insectos, deje de leerlo y busqué su biografía, pues alguien que escriba así tiene que tener algún trauma por allí, al igual que he tenido la misma impresión con kafka y su metamorfosis, adivina lo que encontré…

Cortázar en su primera juventud estuvo en un tratamiento psiquiátrico por su psicosis con estos insectos, traté de confirmar esta versión para referenciar, pero no la encontré, pero si hay algunos trabajos que hablan de su fobia por este animal.

Hace algo más de un año murió uno de mis cuñados, pasó doce años prácticamente postrado después de un ACV, en los últimos cinco años de vida sufría ataques de pánico por las hormigas, sentía que las tenía dentro del cuerpo y se lo estaban comiendo, un verdadero sufrimiento mental y físico.

Con el ejemplo del escritor y el de mi cuñado comencé a trabajar sobre ese miedo irracional y entre los mensajes que me decía y me digo están: no puede ser que te dejes arrinconar por un ser que ante ti es débil, no le des poder, tú puedes y, si he podido, sobre todo he ido manejando esa jugarreta mental que me hace ver cucarachas donde no las hay.

Today I am joining @charjaim's initiative, las fobias, which is certainly not a pleasant topic to address because writing about what disgusts or frightens us, whether we like it or not, places us in that territory, giving space to the mind and body to fulfill their function, but that's how life is, and sometimes we like to seek out that dose of adrenaline. So here I am.

These days, my daughter tells me she wants us to go to the cinema to see a horror movie that has just been released and which, according to critics of the genre, is the best of the season. My response was a loud and clear NO! No matter how much she insists and how much I want to please her during these days I am spending with her, I am not going to go, because I dislike that emotion and I don't see myself seeking it out.

Phobias are on another level and have little to do with voluntary action. I think they are tricks of the mind to play tricks on us, and I say this because one of the recommended ways to overcome them is to face the object of your fear, thereby trying to convince your brain that nothing is wrong, that you can face it and come out on top. in fact, there will be many people who have succeeded, many others who are in the process, and a third group who don't even try.

I have a phobia of cockroaches, that unpleasant mixture of fear and disgust, and as long as I have someone nearby who can take care of the problem (my husband), I free myself from the confrontation because one thing I am sure of is that I will not let it escape because just thinking that it is stalking me keeps me from sleeping or working. But no sudden moves—my thing is lethal poison for them, a spray of Baigon and that's it.

This bravery didn't come out of nowhere. Years ago, I read a story by Julio Cortázar in which he recounted something unpleasant related to this type of insect. I stopped reading and looked up his biography, because someone who writes like that must have some kind of trauma, just like I had the same impression with Kafka and his Metamorphosis. Guess what I found...

In his early youth, Cortázar underwent psychiatric treatment for his psychosis with these insects. I tried to confirm this version for reference, but I couldn't find it, although there are some works that mention his phobia of this animal.

A little over a year ago, one of my brothers-in-law died. He spent twelve years practically bedridden after a stroke, and in the last five years of his life, he suffered panic attacks because of ants. He felt like they were inside his body and eating him, causing him real mental and physical suffering.

With the example of the writer and my brother-in-law, I began to work on that irrational fear, and among the messages I told myself and still tell myself are: you can't let yourself be cornered by someone who is weak in front of you, don't give them power, you can do it, and if I've been able to, above all I've been managing that mental trick that makes me see cockroaches where there aren't any.
