El año pasado estuve en una feria de salud y belleza en Bogotá. Allí conocí a varios expositores, entre ellos, un centro de flotación que ofrece una experiencia de relajación profunda, algo así como retornar al vientre materno. Esto me pareció interesante y hace un par de días me anime a probarlo.

Luego de agendar una sesión de flotación, llegué al lugar y allí me atendieron con mucha amabilidad. Me dieron una pequeña explicación sobre la historia de los tanques, la investigación científica sobre el tema, y lo más importante, los beneficios para reducir los niveles de estrés, lograr una desconexión total del entorno y la estimulación de endorfinas, dopaminas, etc. para lograr una mentalidad más positiva.

También me explicaron que iba estar dentro de un tanque totalmente oscuro y aislado del ruido exterior, y aunque suene extraño, debía flotar desnudo. No debía preocuparme por ello pues el tanque estaba dentro un cuarto privado con ducha y otros elementos, y el nivel del agua es bajo, que al estar mezclada con sales de Epsom, facilitaba la flotación.

Al comienzo sentí algo de preocupación por la oscuridad y el encierro que iba a experimentar, aunque hice los ejercicios de relajación que me explicaron y eso me ayudo a calmarme. Luego de esto, tomé la ducha y me metí dentro del tanque. Entrar fue sencillo, solo había que dar unos pasos al frente y después dar la espalda, sentarme, cerrar la puerta y deslizar mi cuerpo hacia atrás, para flotar boca arriba.

La flotación fue muy fácil, extendí mis brazos y piernas. La calidez del agua fue una sensación agradable. Al comienzo, muchos pensamientos llegaban a mi mente. la oscuridad era total y daba lo mismo si abría o cerraba mis ojos, aunque lo mejor fue mantenerlos cerrados para evitar el contacto con el agua salada.

Poco a poco, los pensamientos fueron disminuyendo y podía escuchar mi cuerpo, por ejemplo, cuando tragaba saliva, de vez en cuando el estomago, la respiración, etc. en un momento tuve un pequeño sueño y quedé dormido un par de minutos. Más adelante sentía que flotaba en una gelatina, como si el agua se hubiese endurecido, lo que me pareció muy interesante.

Finalmente, escuché una melodía, al principio suave y luego más fuerte. Esta era la señal de que la sesión había finalizado, tal y como lo explicaron al comienzo. Me senté dentro del tanque y me acerqué a la puerta, la cual abrió fácilmente. Tomé otra ducha, me puse la ropa y caminé hacia la sala de meditación.

En la sala de meditación, me senté y vi varias libretas de apuntes. Tomé una y escribí algunos de los pensamientos que tuve dentro del tanque, básicamente el deseo de iniciar un nuevo ciclo y lo agradable de la experiencia. Luego me puse a leer lo que otras personas habían compartido, y aprendí varias cosas interesantes.

Estuve otro par de minutos, donde conversé con la persona que me atendió y le hablé de mi experiencia. Después salí nuevamente al mundo exterior y sentí que mi ansiedad y estrés se redujeron bastante, mas liviano en la forma de pensar, aunque con los mismos problemas, sentía que tenia una mentalidad diferente para afrontarlos.

Last year I was at a health and beauty fair in Bogota. There I met several exhibitors, among them, a flotation center that offers a deep relaxation experience, something like returning to the womb. I found this interesting and a couple of days ago I decided to try it.

After scheduling a flotation session, I arrived at the place and there I was attended with great kindness. They gave me a short explanation about the history of the tanks, the scientific research on the subject, and most importantly, the benefits to reduce stress levels, achieve a total disconnection from the environment and stimulation of endorphins, dopamines, etc. to achieve a more positive mindset.

They explained to me that I was going to be inside a tank in total darkness, isolated from outside noise, and although it sounds strange, I should float naked. I didn't have to worry about it because the tank was inside a private room with a shower and other elements, and the water level was low, which, being mixed with Epsom salts, made floating easier.

At first I was a little worried about the darkness and the confinement I was about to experience, but I did the relaxation exercises that were explained to me and that helped me calm down. After that, I took the shower and got into the tank. Getting in was simple, I just had to take a few steps forward and then turn my back, sit down, close the door and slide my body backwards, to float on my back.

Floating was very easy, I stretched out my arms and legs. The warmth of the water was a pleasant sensation. At the beginning, many thoughts came to my mind. The darkness was total and it didn't matter if I opened or closed my eyes, although it was best to keep them closed to avoid contact with the salt water.

Gradually, the thoughts diminished and I could hear my body, for example, when I swallowed saliva, from time to time my stomach, my breathing, etc. At one point I had a little dream and fell asleep for a couple of minutes. Later I felt like I was floating in a jelly, as if the water had hardened, which I found very interesting.

Finally, I heard a melody, soft at first and then louder. This was the signal that the session was over, just as they explained at the beginning. I sat down inside the tank and approached the door, which opened easily. I took another shower, put on my clothes and walked to the meditation room.

In the meditation room, I sat down and saw several notebooks. I took one and wrote down some of the thoughts I had inside the tank, basically the desire to start a new cycle and the pleasantness of the experience. Then I started reading what other people had shared, and learned several interesting things.

I stayed another couple of minutes, where I chatted with the person who took care of me and told him about my experience. Then I went out again to the outside world and I felt that my anxiety and stress reduced a lot, lighter in the way of thinking, although with the same problems, I felt that I had a different mentality to face them.
