Hello friends of @holos-lotus. Today I'm thanking @charjaim for initiative #34 That Life of Ours. The initiative proposed reflecting on those "bitter pills" we've swallowed and answering what we give permission to bring out the worst in us. This question is quite serious and took me back in time, to very turbulent days, but it was, without a doubt, a necessary journey.
Those who have known me for a few years (approximately 5 or 6) would most likely not imagine that before that time I was a constantly active volcano. My temperament was dominated by anger, and I frequently found myself involved in difficult situations. Drinking bitter pills was common, considering my former profession as an accountant. (If any professional in this field reads this, they'll know I'm not lying.)
Due to the emotional exhaustion involved in that job, I often found myself irritable or sensitive at home, even though I don't like conflict and always avoid taking my anger out on anyone who isn't responsible for it.
At the time this incident happened, I had recently moved in with my son's father, and I was still struggling to adapt to the new lifestyle. Living with his mother, in a different province, with different customs and schedules was quite a challenge, even more so for a 21-year-old.
One of the customs I found hardest to accept was the chosen time for dinner (always after 9 p.m.). Every time I asked the reasons for this decision, they told me that, besides preferring it that way, it was because choosing the rice and preparing the seasonings took longer.
At the time, I was the only one working, and my mother-in-law was cooking because I came home very late. Since I had arrived very early that day, I took advantage of the opportunity to clean about 15 pounds of rice and prepare the spices for the meal.
When my husband and his mother arrived home, I told them what I had done and mentioned that we could start eating a little earlier now, to see if my digestion would finally stabilize. But to my surprise (and bitter taste) my mother-in-law told me at the time that she wouldn't cook with that rice.
My first reaction was disbelief. "What do you mean, you're not going to cook this rice?" I asked her. "I don't want to cook with that rice, it's that simple," was her response. When I asked her why she didn't want to cook it, she simply replied: because I don't feel like it.
That answer made me explode. I yelled at her: "What do I do with the rice?" Throw it, he told me. And I, having finally lost all patience after so many bitter pills that day, threw the 15 pounds of rice to the pigs. After a rather heated argument (you can imagine), I sat silently next to my husband on the terrace. He didn't say anything, but I saw a tear in his eyes, and that got me thinking.
We didn't eat that night. My husband went out to buy some pizzas for a snack, and I took the opportunity to talk to his mother. I had thought a lot about what had happened, so I began by apologizing for my volatile and impulsive temper. I told her about my bad day at work, what it had meant to clean that amount of rice after a tiring day. I also told her about the tears on her son's face, that my love for him was greater than my pride, and that, knowing that she loved him as much as I did, we should try to live together in harmony. I said all this without anger and with the desire to achieve harmony in the home. She didn't accept it. She told me the problem was mine and she wasn't responsible for anything.
Those were very difficult times (coexistence is difficult), but from that day on, something changed in me; I grew a little. Similar situations came later, but I no longer reacted the same way. I first thought about the tears in the eyes of the person I loved, and that if it was in my power to prevent them, I would. (Thanks to that, we bonded better at some point.)
Today, he and I are no longer married, but when I look back on those days, I'm happy to recognize that with that "bitter pill" I was learning one of the most important lessons of my life: the greatest antidote to anger is love, for others and for oneself. I'm still a volcano, that's my nature, but now I'm much more aware of my energy, and before exploding (something that happens very rarely these days), I reflect that the bitter aftertaste of old pills can't be there in vain. Nothing has the right to take me out of me; I decide that, and that's the path we're on.

Hola, amigos de @holos-lotus. Hoy agradezco a @charjaim por la iniciativa #34 Esa vida nuestra. La iniciativa proponía reflexionar sobre esos "tragos amargos" que hemos bebido y respondernos a qué le damos permiso para sacar lo peor de nosotros. Esta pregunta es bastante seria y me hizo volver en el tiempo, a días muy convulsos, pero fue, sin dudas, un viaje necesario.
Quienes me conocen desde hace pocos años (5 o 6 aproximadamente) muy probablemente no imaginarían que antes de ese tiempo era un volcán en constante actividad. En mi temperamento predominaba la cólera y era muy frecuente que me viera envuelta en situaciones difíciles. Beber tragos amargos era algo común considerando mi antigua profesión de contadora. (Si algún profesional de esta rama me lee sabrá que no miento).
Por el propio agotamiento emocional que implicaba desempeñarme en esa tarea, era muy frecuente encontrarme irritable o susceptible también en el hogar, aún cuando no me gusta el conflicto y siempre evite desquitarme las molestias con quien no es responsable de ellas.
En el tiempo en que sucedió esta anécdota me había mudado recientemente a vivir con el padre de mi hijo a su casa y aún me costaba adaptarme al nuevo sistema de vida. Convivir con su mamá, en otra provincia, con otras costumbres y horarios era todo un reto, más aún para los 21 años que tenía en esa época.
Una de las costumbres que más me costaba aceptar era el horario escogido para cenar (siempre después de las 9 de la noche). Todas las veces que pregunté las causas de esa decisión me dijeron que, además de que lo preferían así, era que escoger el arroz y preparar los condimentos demoraba más las cosas.
En aquel momento solo yo trabajaba y mi suegra cocinaba pues yo llegaba muy tarde a casa. Como ese día había llegado muy temprano aproveché para limpiar alrededor de 15 libras de arroz y preparé las especias para la comida.
Cuando mi esposo y su madre llegaron a casa les conté lo que había hecho y les comenté que ahora podíamos comenzar a comer un poco más temprano, a ver si por fin se estabilizaba mi digestión. Pero cuál no sería mi sorpresa (y trago amargo) cuando mi suegra en ese entonces me dijo que ella no cocinaría con aquel arroz.
Mi primera reacción fue de incredulidad. —¿Cómo que no vas a cocinar este arroz? — le pregunté. —No quiero cocinar con ese arroz, así de sencillo —fue su respuesta. Al preguntarle por qué no quería cocinarlo solo me respondió: porque no me da la gana.
Aquella respuesta me hizo explotar. Le grité entonces: ¿Y que hago con el arroz? Bótalo, me dijo. Y yo, que había terminado de perder toda la paciencia después de otros muchos tragos amargos en el día, le lancé las 15 libras de arroz a los cerdos. Luego de una discusión bastante acalorada (podrán imaginarse) me senté en silencio al lado de mi esposo en la terraza. Él no dijo nada, pero vi una lágrima en sus ojos y aquello me dejó pensando.
Esa noche no comimos. Mi esposo salió a comprar unas pizzas para merendar y yo aproveché para hablar con su mamá. Había pensado mucho en lo sucedido, por eso comencé disculpándome por mi carácter volátil e impulsividad. Le comenté sobre mí mal día en el trabajo, lo que había representado limpiar esa cantidad de arroz después de un día cansado, le hablé también de la lágrima en el rostro de su hijo, que mi amor por él era mayor a mi orgullo y que, sabiendo que ella lo amaba tanto como yo, intentaramos convivir en armonía. Todo esto lo dije despojada de ira y con la voluntad de alcanzar armonía en el hogar. Ella no aceptó. Me dijo que el problema era mío y ella no era responsable de nada.
Fueron tiempos muy difíciles (la convivencia lo es), pero a partir de ese día algo cambió en mí, crecí un poco. Situaciones similares vinieron después, pero ya no reaccioné de la misma forma. Pensaba primero en la lágrima en los ojos de la persona que amaba, y en que si estaba en mis manos evitarla, lo haría. (Gracias a eso nos relacionamos mejor en algún momento).
Hoy ya no estamos casados él y yo, pero al recordar esos días me alegra reconocer que con aquel "trago amargo" estaba aprendiendo una de las lecciones más importantes de mi vida: el mayor antídoto contra la cólera es el amor, por los demás y por uno mismo. Sigo siendo un volcán, esa es mi naturaleza, pero ahora soy mucho más consciente de mi energía y antes de explotar (algo que hoy sucede muy pocas veces) reflexiono en que el regusto amargo de los viejos tragos no pueden estar ahí en vano. Nada tiene el derecho de sacarme de mí, eso lo decido yo y en ese camino andamos.
