For us adults, this may seem like an absurd question. That's why I'm writing this post especially for your children, nephews, godchildren, or any young person under your care.
Although, it also works for us parents, just so you know you're not alone and that the same thing happens to others as you.
Recently, my oldest son was telling my husband that he didn't want to obey. He just wanted to do what he wanted to do.
And it all started because we asked him to do something, and instead of doing what we asked, he asked us, "Why did he have to do it?"
We explained to him that they don't have to know everything; they just have to trust and obey us when we give them directions. If we do, there's a reason.
We told him that maybe we can't explain the reason right now; or we can't spend time explaining it, or we simply can't explain it at all, because it's something that concerns us adults.
But above all, we told him that he must obey us regardless of the reason.
Sometimes, they have to listen to us so they can learn how to do something safely. I reminded him that we have many years of experience and have been through almost everything he and his brother are going through and will go through.
Even if we haven't been through it ourselves, we know someone who has. Therefore, if we tell them to do something in some way at some point (or not to do it at all), it's because we know what we're talking about.
Therefore, they should learn and benefit from our experience.
Especially because every action has its consequence.
If we tell them to study and learn everything they teach in school, if we ask them to read and educate themselves, to acquire a universal, general, and comprehensive culture, and then enroll in college, it's for a very important reason.
Something they'll thank us for when they grow up.
If we teach them to swim, ride bicycles, skate, and sometimes tell them they shouldn't ride bicycles, skate, or go swimming when it's raining, or after a storm, or even before the storm passes, it's because we know the reasons.
We know that the consequences of disobeying us are very serious and sometimes irreversible.
Perhaps I exaggerated in the examples I gave, but this applies to everything.
For example, every teenager believes they're invincible and that nothing will happen to them. We all believe that we're going to play soccer and fall, we're not going to break a bone, we're not going to get hit.
Until it happens to us.
My son asked my permission to enroll him in a wrestling class, and my husband and I, without thinking twice, said no.
You might think it's an exaggeration to prohibit this from a 16-year-old male, but in his case, it's more than justified since he's a concert guitarist. And wrestlers very often fracture or injure their fingers.
For a guitarist, this could mean the end of his career.
Of course, he understood this, although he wasn't happy about it. And we understand.
The other part of the consequences for their actions or inactions is that most of the time they are borne by innocent people. That is, us, the parents, or third parties in general.
If we ask them to come home at a certain time and they don't, that can affect us, as it might ruin everything we planned for the rest of the day.
If they can't study a degree and miss a year of school, this could lead to unplanned financial expenses and a year of delay in their lives.
And these are minor consequences, since depending on our children's disobedience, these consequences could be much worse for everyone.
In our case, I prefer to talk a lot with my children and explain these things I'm writing to you today.
My husband explains them, sometimes with quite graphic examples that I don't like because they're too extreme... although correct.
And when they, as teenagers, finally resisted authority, he would get upset and resort to punishment or coercion.
I understand that he did this out of good intentions to try to protect them, but we reached a consensus that from now on, we would try to convince them and explain everything to them, until they did it conscientiously.
Something we have achieved after much effort and several bitter experiences.
They already listen to us enough without questioning what we ask for... Although, sometimes, adolescence gets the better of us.
But, these cases are becoming fewer and fewer.
We are making progress.

Para nosotros los adultos, quizás este sea una pregunta absurda. Por eso es que dirijo este post especialmente para sus hijos, sobrinos, ahijados o cualquier joven bajo su tutela.
Aunque, también funciona para nosotros los padres, solo para que sepan que no están solos y que a los demás le sucede lo mismo que a ustedes.
Hace poco mi hijo mayor le decía a mi esposo que él no quería obedecer. Solo quería hacer lo que deseaba hacer.
Y todo comenzó porque nosotros le pedimos que hiciera una cosa y él, en lugar de hacer lo que le pedimos, nos preguntó ¿por qué tenía que hacerlo?
Nosotros le explicamos que no tienen que saberlo todo, solo tienen que confiar y obedecernos cuando les damos una indicación. Si lo hacemos, por algo será.
Le dijimos que quizás no podemos explicarle el por qué en ese momento; o no podemos perder tiempo en la explicación o sencillamente no podemos explicarles en absoluto, por ser algo que nos conciernen a nosotros los adultos.
Pero sobre todas las cosas, le dijimos que él debe obedecernos a nosotros independientemente de la razón.
En ocasiones, deben hacernos caso para que aprendan cómo hacer algo de una forma segura. Le recordé que nosotros tenemos muchos años de experiencia y hemos pasado por todo o casi todo por lo que él y su hermano están pasando y pasarán.
Incluso si no lo hemos pasado, conocemos a alguien que ha pasado por lo mismo que ellos. Por tanto, si le decimos que hagan algo de algún modo en algún momento (o que no lo hagan), es porque sabemos de lo que hablamos.
Por tanto, deben aprender y aprovechar nuestra experiencia.
En especial, porque toda acción tiene su consecuencia.
Si le decimos que estudien y que se aprendan todo lo que imparten en la escuela, si les pedimos que lean y se instruyan, que adquieran una cultura universal, general e integral y que luego matriculen en la universidad, es por una razón de mucho peso.
Algo que nos agradecerán cuando crezcan.
Si los enseñamos a nadar, a montar bicicletas, patines y en ocasiones les decimos que no deben montar bicicleta o patines o ir a nadar cuando está lloviendo, o luego de alguna tormenta o incluso, antes de que pase la tormenta, es porque sabemos la razones.
Sabemos que las consecuencias de desobedecernos son muy graves y a veces, irreversibles.
Quizás exageré en los ejemplos que expuse, pero esto es aplicable a todo.
Por ejemplo, todo adolescente se cree invencible y que a él no le pasa nada. Todos creemos que vamos a jugar fútbol y nos vamos a caer, no nos vamos a fracturar un hueso, no nos van a dar un golpe.
Hasta que nos sucede.
Mi hijo me pidió permiso para matricular en una clase de lucha libre y mi esposo y yo, sin pensarlo dos veces, le dijimos que no.
Pensarán que es una exageración prohibirle esto a un adolescente varón de 16 años, pero en su caso está más que justificado ya que él es guitarrista concertista; y los luchadores, con mucha frecuencia, se fracturan o lesionan los dedos de la mano.
Para un guitarrista esto podría significar el fin de su carrera.
Por supuesto, él lo entendió aunque nada contento. Y lo entendemos.
La otra parte de las consecuencias por sus acciones o inacciones, es que la mayoría de las veces estas son pagadas por los inocentes. O sea: nosotros los padres o terceras personas en general.
Si les pedimos que lleguen a la casa a una hora determinada y no lo hacen, eso puede afectarnos a nosotros ya que quizás nos estropee todo lo planificado en lo que queda de día.
Si no puede estudiar alguna carrera y pierde un año escolar, eso que podía conllevarnos a gastos monetarios no planificados y un atraso de un año de su vida.
Y estas son consecuencias menores ya que en dependencia de la desobediencia de nuestros hijos, estas consecuencias podrían ser mucho peores para todos.
En nuestro caso, yo prefiero conversar mucho con mis hijos y explicarles estas cosas que hoy les escribo.
Mi esposo se las explica, en ocasiones con ejemplos bastante gráficos que a mí no me gustan por ser muy extremos... aunque correctos.
Y cuando ellos, adolescentes al fin hacen resistencia a la autoridad, él se molestaba y recurría al castigo o a la imposición.
Yo entiendo que esto lo hacía con buena voluntad por tratar de protegerlos, pero llegamos al consenso en que en lo adelante, trataríamos de convencerlos y explicarles todo, hasta que lo hicieran a conciencia.
Cosa que hemos conseguido tras mucho esfuerzo y varios tragos amargos.
Ya nos hacen bastante caso sin cuestionar lo que pedimos... Aunque, en ocasiones, la adolescencia puede más que nosotros.
Pero cada vez son menos estos casos. Vamos avanzando.
