Why are we asking grieving people to "Be Strong"? Why do people hurry to ask a person in mourning not to cry and to be strong? They say, "You have to endure, keep being strong." But do these well-meaning people really understand how much pain the bereaved one has inside his heart?
I saw something so heartbreaking yesterday. My brother-in-law was laying his wife to rest, and the young man simply couldn't hold back anymore. Tears of pain flowed effortlessly down his hollow eyes. You know what? Grieving doesn't make you weak; it is actually the medicine, the very one needed to cure the ache in losing someone special. If those tears aren't allowed to flow from those pain-filled eyes, that hurt stays buried inside. And then is when it can lead to a disaster.
I believe the grieving person should be allowed to mourn as much as they want, in whatever way they see fit. They are the ones who bear this pain; they will know best how to get it out of their system. Let them cry if they need to; those tears ease the pain inside. Whatever they do to grieve is okay, as long as they are not harming themselves in any way.
Just imagine this: a young man, just 35 years old, loses his dear wife, leaving three kids behind. Yet he is being told to be a man and not to cry. Even for me, upon the imagined sudden death of this woman, I feel like crying, and I am not directly bereaved.
I talked to one guy recently-a man whose wife died this year. As he mentioned something related to his late wife and the process of healing, I just thought about sharing his approach with my brother-in-law. But there he stopped me. He told us to allow my brother-in-law to grieve in his own style. And his words were still ringing in my head: "He's the one who lost a wife, not any of us. There is nothing to be done about it except accepting the loss. People go through a lot and what is needed is for others to be there and allow them to deal with the separation in the way they want to.
When you find yourself next to someone who has lost a loved one, do not encourage him with the words, ‘be strong’. Maybe just engage in some activity with that person. If that person feels like crying, let them cry. If that person feels like talking, let them talk. Or do nothing. Just sit in silence together. Because there is no cure for grief, grief needs to become a part of our life and can be dealt in ways as per the individual preferences.
It is important to remember that loss affects every individual in a unique way and there’s no right way to feel. The only right way is what works for each person in the journey toward healing, processing their loss-even if that means many tears along the way. After all, those are not symptoms of weakness-they are symptoms of love.
