Ahora que estamos a 15 de diciembre, parece que el espíritu navideño se ha instalado en la gente que hace compras frenéticas para las fiestas. Pero esto fue algo que descubrí el otro día cuando estaba en el centro comercial. Los villancicos sonaban en los altavoces y en todo el centro comercial había señales de rebajas, así que en lugar de que la gente comprara estos regalos de Navidad para otras personas, parecía que los compraban principalmente para sí mismos.
El egoísmo se ha convertido en una palabra de moda y afirmaciones como "me amo" y "me lo merezco" se han convertido en mantras comunes, como el egocentrismo y la creencia en el derecho a todo. El amor propio o el cuidado personal son buenos, pero creo que la Navidad implica más que el egocentrismo.
Y no mentiría al decir que soy parte del problema. Mi casa está llena de cosas de desecho que nunca uso. Por ejemplo, hay tres cosas de las que no creo que nadie necesite tres. Y aún más molestas son las cosas rotas de las que no puedo deshacerme. Me da mucha vergüenza pensar en ello.
Han ocurrido muchos cambios en mi vida desde que cumplí 40 años. La actitud de esperar regalos de Navidad de los demás ya no tiene cabida en mi corazón. Y no espero que Papá Noel venga corriendo a mi zona, pero la Navidad ha sido la época del año que más disfrutaba y, ¡sabes qué! Puede que no seas una persona de fe o religiosa, pero no podemos ignorar la oleada mágica que trae consigo el período navideño.
Pero aquí está el gorila en la esquina del que todo el mundo tiene miedo de hablar: la Navidad no gira en torno a conseguir el iPhone más nuevo y atractivo, ni siquiera en torno a una tarta de queso en forma de árbol de Navidad que todo el mundo se esfuerza por hacer. Se trata de la celebración del nacimiento de Jesucristo. Eso es todo.
Todos deberían recordar la historia relacionada con Jesús y cómo nació en Belén. Bueno, no sé cómo decirlo correctamente, estoy seguro de que se darán cuenta, pero está ahí para todos. Esta no es una historia enterrada en las arenas del tiempo, es una historia que nutre el espíritu de la humanidad con los elementos de la fe, la esperanza y el amor, porque estas son algunas de las cosas y aspectos con los que se identificarían muchas personas en el mundo de hoy.
Este año, abandonemos el desorden del consumismo y concentrémonos en amar y ayudar a los demás según las enseñanzas de Cristo. No se trata solo del árbol decorado con nuestros regalos o de las celebraciones. Más bien, se trata de cambiar las vidas de quienes están en extrema necesidad.
No puedo creer lo rápido que se acerca esta Navidad. En lugar de estar ansiosos por gastar más dinero, reequilibremos nuestro enfoque e intentemos satisfacer las necesidades de los necesitados con palabras bien dichas de amor y esperanza, y valoremos los aspectos positivos de la vida. Y la buena noticia es que todos podemos participar y contribuir de una mejor manera.
E incluso si no te gusta el aspecto religioso de todo el asunto, creo que todos podemos estar de acuerdo en que solo cuando uno intenta dar, todo lo demás logra funcionar al final. Como se dice, "es más feliz dar que recibir" y realmente creo que hay algo de verdad en eso.
Así que este año asegurémonos de hacerlo bien. Refresquemos nuestras mentes sobre lo que realmente estamos celebrando. Porque al final, celebrar no se trata de las cosas, se trata del amor que tenemos unos por otros y de cuánto bien hacemos.

Now that we’re on the 15th day of December. A holiday spirit seems to have made its way into people as they shop frenzies for the holidays. But this was something that I found the other day as I was out in the mall. Christmas carols are playing in the loudspeakers and throughout the mall there were signs of sales, so instead of people buying these Christmas presents for other people it seemed like they were mostly purchasing them for themselves.
Selfishness has became a buzzword with statements such as “I love me” and “I deserve it” becoming common mantras such as self-centrism and belief in entitlement. Self-love or self-care is good, but I believe there is more to Christmas than self-centeredness.
And I wouldn’t lie that I am part of the problem. My house is scattered with waste items that I never use. For instance there are three things of which I don’t believe anyone needs three of. And even more annoying are the broken things I can't seem to get rid of. It's just so embarrassing when I think about it.
There have been a lot of changes in my life since I turned 40. The’ attitude of expecting Christmas presents from others no longer has a place in my heart. And I am not expecting Santa to come running over to my area, but Christmas has been the time of the year I used to enjoy the most and you know what! You may not be a person of faith or religious, yet we cannot brush aside the magic surge Christmas period brings around.
But here’s the gorilla in the corner that everyone is afraid to talk about: Christmas doesn’t revolve around getting the hottest, new iPhone, or even around a Christmas tree cheesecake that everybody is trying their best to make. It is all about the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. That's all about it.
You should all recall the story relating to Jesus and how he was born in Bethlehem. Well, I do not know how to put properly, I am sure you can tell, but it is up there for everyone. This is not a story buried in the sands of time, it is one that nourishes the spirit of mankind with the elements of faith, hope, and love because these are some of the things and aspects one would find many people in the world today identifying with.
This year, let us abandon the disorder of consumerism and concentrate on loving and helping others as per the teaching of Christ. It is not about the decorated tree with our gifts or the celebrations alone. Rather, it's about changing the lives of those who are in dire need.
I just can't believe how fast this Christmas is coming upon us. Instead of being anxious about spending more money, let's rebalance our focus and try to meet the needs of those in need with well-spoken words of love and hope, and cherish the positives of life. And the good news is we all can participate and contribute in a better way.
And even if you don't like the religious aspect of the whole thing, I think we can all agree it's only when one tries to give that everything else manages to work out in the end. Like it's said, "It's more blessed to give than to receive" and I really do believe there's some truth to that
So this year let us ensure that we do it right. Let's refresh our minds about what we are really celebrating. Because in the end, celebrating is not about the things – it is about the love we have for each other and how much good we do.
