La primera vez que escuché hablar de la ventana de Johari fue en un curso de posgrado. En esa oportunidad me llamó la atención lo que decían sobre tener una parte de la personalidad que fuese desconocida, también me causó curiosidad cómo nos veían los demás.
Para mí fue revelador saber que todos tenemos una zona de sombras, aunque muchos ni siquiera sospecháramos de eso. De allí que a veces nos sorprendemos cuando nos vemos actuando de una forma inesperada, distinta a nuestra manera habitual de ser. A veces nos preguntamos: ¿por qué dije esto o aquello? ¿Por qué actué de ese modo, si no soy así…?
Mucho tiempo estuve convencido de tener un temperamento pacífico, trataba de alejarme de discusiones fuertes porque sentía que todo lo que implicara violencia me afectaba. De muchacho no participé en peleas, ni estuve en pandillas, las que estuvieron muy de moda en mi juventud.
Mi primer encuentro con esa zona desconocida de la personalidad la tuve cuando tendría algunos doce años. En esa oportunidad un familiar reprendió fuertemente a uno de mis hermanos menores, incluso llegó a darle una cachetada. En ese momento sentí un impulso inusitado, tomé un palo de escoba y lo descargué con toda mi furia en la espalda de ese familiar. Mi madre me miró desconcertada como si algún espíritu maléfico se hubiese posesionado de mí, como si se tratara de otra persona. Ella al igual que yo nunca pensamos que yo sería capaz de un acto similar.
En otra oportunidad ya tenía mis dos primeros hijos, venía de un largo viaje y estaba entrando a Maracay, los niños estaban pequeños. En un cruce de calles dos sujetos en un carro me cortaron la vía, casi me hicieron voltear. Para ese entonces yo tenía un jeep que era más inestable que el carro. Aquella maniobra me produjo un gran susto y una gran rabia, los niños se golpearon contra los asientos y comenzaron a llorar.
Desde mi ventana les reclamé a voz en cuello a los de ese carro por haber sido tan temerarios. Ellos me manotearon y amenazaron con detenerse. En ese instante solo se me ocurrió estacionarme, agarrar el tranca palanca del jeep, que era una especie de bastón de acero, bajarme del rustico y enfrentarlos dirigiéndome hacia donde estaban estacionados. Ellos al verme decidieron dejar las cosas de ese tamaño y siguieron su camino.
Cuando logré serenarme me di cuenta del terrible error que había cometido. Puse en riesgo la integridad de mis hijos, porque aquella imprudencia mía pudo haber tenido consecuencias desastrosas. Los hombres pudieron estar armados o simplemente pudieron usar su superioridad numérica en mi contra.
Esa vez me di cuenta que en situaciones de gran estrés podía responder con violencia. Me decidí a tomar cartas en el asunto y me empeñé en tratar de controlar ese tipo de respuestas. Con el correr del tiempo pude ganar más control y al día de hoy creo que sería muy difícil volver a actuar de aquella manera. Pero como solemos decir: uno nunca sabe… Todos mis amigos y conocidos me tienen por un hombre pacífico y conciliador.
Con el tiempo también aprendí a valorar las opiniones que los otros tienen de mí, tomé conciencia que eso era fundamental para una sana comunicación.
Todos nos vemos de una manera y pensamos que estamos transmitiendo esa imagen, pero los demás pueden percibirnos distinto, la única forma de saberlo es escuchar lo que dicen de nosotros. Si hay discrepancias entre esas dos imágenes algo no está bien. Puede ser que no estemos siendo suficientemente sinceros o que en el fondo estemos aparentando.
Es un gran error pensar que los otros están equivocados. No puede ser casualidad que diferentes personas nos digan que somos serios cuando nosotros nos sentimos el rey de la comedia. Discrepancias como esas son suficiente motivo para revisarnos interiormente.

Hence, sometimes we are surprised when we see ourselves acting in an unexpected way, different from our usual way of being. Sometimes we ask ourselves: why did I say this or that, why did I act that way, if I am not like that...?
For a long time I was convinced that I had a peaceful temperament, I tried to stay away from strong arguments because I felt that everything that involved violence affected me. As a boy I did not participate in fights, nor was I in gangs, which were very fashionable in my youth.
My first encounter with that unknown area of my personality was when I was about twelve years old. On that occasion a relative strongly reprimanded one of my younger brothers, even slapping him. At that moment I felt an unusual impulse, I took a broomstick and unloaded it with all my fury on the back of that relative. My mother looked at me bewildered as if some evil spirit had taken possession of me, as if it were someone else. She as well as I never thought I would be capable of such an act.
Another time I had my first two children, I was coming from a long trip and was entering Maracay, the children were small. At a crossroads two guys in a car cut me off, they almost made me turn over. At that time I had a jeep that was more unstable than the car. That maneuver gave me a great shock and anger, the children hit the seats and began to cry.
From my window I complained loudly to those in that car for having been so reckless. They swatted at me and threatened to stop. At that moment I just parked, grabbed the jeep's crowbar, which was a kind of steel baton, got out of the rustic and confronted them, heading towards where they were parked. When they saw me they decided to leave the things of that size and went on their way.
When I managed to calm down, I realized what a terrible mistake I had made. I had put my children's safety at risk, because my imprudence could have had disastrous consequences. The men could have been armed or they could have simply used their numerical superiority against me.
That time I realized that in situations of great stress I could respond with violence. I decided to take matters into my own hands and made it a point to try to control such responses. As time went by I was able to gain more control and today I think it would be very difficult to act that way again. But as we say: you never know... All my friends and acquaintances think of me as a peaceful and conciliatory man.
With time I also learned to value the opinions that others have of me, I became aware that this was fundamental for a healthy communication.
We all see ourselves in a certain way and we think we are transmitting that image, but others may perceive us differently, the only way to know this is to listen to what they say about us. If there are discrepancies between those two images something is not right. It may be that we are not being sincere enough or that we are pretending.
It is a big mistake to think that others are wrong. It cannot be a coincidence that different people tell us that we are serious when we feel we are the king of comedy. Discrepancies like that are reason enough to check ourselves inwardly.
