Desde muy joven me ha interesado conocer la historia de mi familia. Siempre me causó curiosidad saber quiénes fueron mis tatarabuelos, bisabuelos, y abuelos, también cómo fue que mis padres llegaron del campo a la ciudad, cómo se conocieron y cosas de ese tipo.
El problema con esto es que las únicas fuentes de información son las mismas personas y solo ellos deciden lo que están dispuestos a contar.
Por esa razón mi historia familiar está llena de lagunas, y así se va a quedar porque ya la única persona que queda para contar es mi madre, todos los demás han muerto.
Nunca supe, por ejemplo, quien fue el padre de mi abuela, quizá ella era hija de otro padre distinto al de sus hermanos, lo que es completamente normal en una cultura como la nuestra donde los hombres van sembrando hijos por todos lados. Es probable que de ser así mi abuela hubiese sentido algo de vergüenza por eso, eran otros tiempos… Siendo niño y adolescente le pregunté muchas veces quién era su padre, para saber algo sobre mi bisabuelo, y ella de las formas más ingeniosas fue eludiendo la respuesta y nunca habló de eso.
Pero no era la única que se negaba a darme a conocer algo sobre mi historia familiar. Estoy seguro que más de una vez le hice la misma pregunta a mi tía y a mi padre y tampoco obtuve respuesta. No me extrañaría que ellos tampoco supieran nada sobre su abuelo materno, quizá asumieron como algo natural que habían niños que no tenían ni padres, ni abuelos. Total, también es normal entre nosotros que con la madre es más que suficiente.
Otra pregunta sin respuesta fue sobre el padre de mis tíos menores. Mi abuela tuvo hijos de dos hombres. Mi padre es hijo del primero; sobre ese abuelo supe lo elemental, que era del Táchira, dedicado a la siembra de café y que tuvo otros hijos con su esposa. A esos tíos y a sus hijos tuve la fortuna de conocerlos. Pero el padre de mis dos tíos menores se quedó en el misterio. En la casa nada se hablaba sobre ese tema. Al parecer el único interesado en conocer esas cosas fui yo, y nadie nunca supo decirme nada sobre ese señor.
Hace poco caí en cuenta que no sabía cómo fue que mi padre llegó del Táchira a Caracas. Lo relativo a mi madre si lo he sabido siempre: cuando todavía era una adolescente decidió huir de los maltratos de una madrastra bastante dura, se puso de acuerdo con una hermana y sin mucho pensarlo se vinieron las dos a la Capital.
Pensé que saber cómo llegó mi padre sería muy sencillo, bastaría con preguntarle a mi madre, que a sus noventa años tiene una memoria de acero. Ella vivió con mi padre por más de veinte años, formó una familia y tuvo cuatro hijos, mis hermanos.
Pero mi sorpresa fue mayúscula cuando hace pocos días se lo pregunté. No lo podía creer. Le dije: mamá cómo fue que mi padre llegó a Caracas. Y de la manera más calmada me respondió que no sabía.

I was fortunate enough to meet those uncles and their children. But the father of my two younger uncles remained a mystery. Nothing was ever said about this subject at home.
