Buenos días estimado lector. En esta entrega de nuestra serie Prefrontalidad, vamos a abordar el tema del qué dirán que en parte mucho tiene que ver con las relaciones humanas. He podido inspirarme en un post muy interesante de @iriswrite donde aborda este tema y me he dado cuenta que es la ocasión perfecta para abordarlo desde la perspectiva de la atención profunda, que es la puerta a un torrente interminable de sabiduría.
Como te he comentado antes, la mente no siempre debería estar activa, a pesar de lo que nos dice nuestra cultura. No necesitas tener una necesidad pavorosa de controlar todo a cada instante, porque eso ocupa la mente en intentar regular tus emociones mientras lo haces lo que estorba al proceso mismo de aprendizaje. ¿Aprendizaje de qué? De todo, estimado lector.
¿Nunca te has preguntado donde vienen tus buenas ideas?
Antes de que puedas pensarlas, o decir que son tuyas, estas han sido procesadas por la mente a un nivel inconsciente a través de los datos que tu atención ha adquirido. Esto se hace en tiempo real y mientras duermes el hippocampo repite los hechos del día en velocidad rápida, todo en base a lo que tú absorbiste. No es extraño que por solo dormir, al día siguiente seamos mucho mejores en una actividad que intentamos el día anterior.
Las relaciones humanas no son la excepción. Hoy se le llaman habilidades sociales, que están en serio peligro de extinción gracias a los medios audiovisuales. Para sentir amor, afecto y conexión son absolutamente esenciales, de modo que uno de los aspectos más paralizantes en este nivel es la llamada ansiedad social.
¿Y qué mejor definición de este padecimiento, sino la compulsión constante de juzgarte a ti mismo y a los demás?
Yo la he sufrido durante mucho tiempo. Nisiquiera intento odiar a las personas, ni a mis acciones, simplemente los sentimientos acuden espontáneamente, con pensamientos que inevitablemente me llenan de ansiedad, incluso si conscientemente no estoy de acuerdo con ellos. Esto lo tengo desde muy pequeño como sistema de defensa para evitar que los demás me rechacen, cosa a la que soy inconscientemente sensible. Me pone simplemente de mal humor y antes, cuando no tenía las herramientas para procesar esas emociones podían arruinarme el día completo hasta que me iba a dormir y mi mente podía lidiar por fin con ellas durante el sueño, por su cuenta.
Estoy convencido que esas personas que juzgan constantemente a otros y a sí mismos tienen sin lugar a dudas una ansiedad social en algún grado. De otro modo sería inútil condenar al otro, salvo para salvarte a ti mismo del aparente daño que te podría hacer acercarte a una persona que podría ser rechazada. Cabe recordar que como criaturas sociales o tribales que somos el rechazo solía ser una cuestión de vida o muerte para nuestros ancestros primitivos. Nuestros cerebros no han cambiado nada desde hace 100 mil años, de modo que probablemente, nunca nos hará sentir sin ayuda que el rechazo, o el riesgo de este, está bien.
¿Es posible vivir sin este miedo?
Desde luego que sí, porque de otro modo yo nunca habría mejorado. Nada está escrito en piedra, pero tu cerebro necesita tu ayuda para comprenderlo. Necesita que intentes decirle que el rechazo no es para tanto, porque ya no estamos en la jungla. Para eso, opta por ejercicios de respiración, meditación y procesamiento emocional que hemos discutido antes. Estas no se sentirán inmediatamente, pero con el tiempo causas cambios neuronales que irán cambiado tu química emocional para bien y así, el miedo perderá el control sobre tu vida.
Mantén tu vista en el objetivo de tu vida. ¿Te acuerdas de lo que hablábamos sobre la importancia de tener un propósito?
Intenta lograrlo cada día. En el proceso te ocurrirán cosas, o te dirán cosas y de todas puedes aprender algo si estás presente, en tus sentidos, mientras ocurren. Incluso, si tienes el infortunio de tener una mente poseída por el miedo, intenta estar presente mientras eso ocurre. Intenta mirar lo que te hace. Lo que te hace hacerle o decirle a los demás, tratando de no alimentar la culpa o el autodesprecio. Notarás como es absorbido por tu interior, como el agua del mar sobre la arena de la playa. Mientras más lo hagas, mejor te harás y llegará el punto en que el miedo no podrá arrinconarte. Se siente como recuperar tu vida poco a poco. No querrás detenerte jamás.

Good morning, dear reader. In this installment of our Prefrontality series, we're going to address the topic of what people will say, which in part has a lot to do with human relationships. I was inspired by a very interesting post by @iriswrite where she addresses this topic, and I realized it's the perfect opportunity to approach it from the perspective of deep attention, which is the gateway to an endless stream of wisdom.
As I've mentioned before, the mind shouldn't always be active, despite what our culture tells us. You don't need to have a terrifying need to control everything at every moment, because that occupies the mind trying to regulate your emotions while you're doing it, which hinders the learning process itself. Learning what? Everything, dear reader.
Have you ever wondered where your good ideas come from?
Before you can even think them, or say they're yours, they've been processed by the mind at an unconscious level through the data your attention has acquired. This happens in real time, and while you sleep, the hippocampus replays the day's events at rapid speed, all based on what you absorbed. It's not unusual that just by sleeping, we're much better the next day at an activity we attempted the day before.
Human relationships are no exception. Today, these are called social skills, which are in serious danger of extinction thanks to audiovisual media. Feeling love, affection, and connection are absolutely essential, so one of the most paralyzing aspects at this level is social anxiety.
And what better definition of this condition than the constant compulsion to judge yourself and others?
I've suffered from it for a long time. I don't even try to hate people or my actions; the feelings just come spontaneously, with thoughts that inevitably fill me with anxiety, even if I consciously disagree with them. I've had this since I was very young as a defense system to prevent others from rejecting me, something to which I'm unconsciously sensitive. It simply puts me in a bad mood, and before, when I didn't have the tools to process those emotions, they could ruin my entire day until I went to sleep and my mind could finally deal with them during my dreams, on its own.
I'm convinced that those people who constantly judge others and themselves undoubtedly have social anxiety to some degree. Otherwise, it would be pointless to condemn others, except to save yourself from the apparent harm that approaching a person who might be rejected could cause you. It's worth remembering that as social or tribal creatures, rejection used to be a matter of life or death for our primitive ancestors. Our brains haven't changed at all in 100,000 years, so we'll probably never feel that rejection, or the risk of it, as okay without help.
Is it possible to live without this fear?
Of course it is, because otherwise I would never have improved. Nothing is set in stone, but your brain needs your help to understand this. It needs you to try to tell it that rejection isn't that big of a deal, because we're no longer in the jungle. To do that, try the breathing excercises, meditation, and emotional processing exercises we discussed in other posts. These won't be felt immediately, but over time, they cause neural changes that will shift your emotional chemistry for the better, and thus, fear will lose its control over your life.
Keep your sights set on your life's goal. Remember we were talking about about the importance of having a purpose on this blog?
Try to achieve it every day. In the process, things will happen to you, or things will be said to you, and you can learn something from all of them if you are present, in your senses, while they happen. Even if you are unfortunate enough to have a mind possessed by fear, try to be present while it happens. Try to observe what it does to you. What it makes you do or say to others, trying not to feed guilt or self-loathing. You will notice how it is absorbed into your core, like seawater onto the sand at the beach. The more you do this, the better you will become, and you will reach the point where fear can no longer corner you. It feels like taking back your life little by little. You will never want to stop.
