Terry is a strong man, the strongest I have ever met in my life, I will tell you why. Terry usually walks through the corridors of our workplace humming some songs, filling all that cold and meaningless place with joy, he is always willing to listen to the stupid things we say as a group at lunch, but above all he is always willing to help when we are alone.
He is one of those people you call a "friend" and definitely something must be going very well with him, because he always seems to be in a good mood, and he spreads it to us all the time with his presence. A few months ago, when I was having a terrible time, Terry sat with me on break, gave me some advice and by the end of the day, I was feeling much better.
However, it's been a few days since Terry came to work, it always happens once a year, he disappears for a few days, leaving everything empty without his presence, we don't know where he is going or if he is sick and every time we ask him, he evades the question with a joke or a witty comment.
Terry es un hombre fuerte, el mas fuerte que he conocido en mi vida, ya les contaré por qué. Terry suele caminar por los pasillos de nuestro lugar de trabajo tarareando algunas canciones, llenando todo ese lugar frío y sin sentido de alegría, siempre está dispuesto a escuchar las estupideces que decimos en grupo en el almuerzo, pero sobretodo siempre está dispuesto a ayudar cuando nos encontramos a solas.
Es uno de esos a los que uno llama "amigo" y definitivamente algo debe estarle saliendo muy bien, pues siempre parece estar de buen humor, y nos lo contagia todo el tiempo con su presencia. Hace unos meses, cuando la estuve pasando del asco, Terry se sentó conmigo en el descanso, me dió varios consejos y al final del día, yo ya estaba mucho mejor.
Sin embargo, hace unos días que Terry no viene a trabajar, siempre ocurre una vez al año, el desaparece por unos días, dejando todo vacío sin su presencia, no sabemos a dónde va o si está enfermo y cada vez que le preguntamos, evade la pregunta con un chiste o un comentario ocurrente.
Today when I left work, I took a different route to go home, and on the way, I saw Terry in the distance, he was with puffy eyes and some flowers in his hands, he looked like a completely different person than the one we usually see at work, I got a little worried and followed him for a while, he was walking with his shoulders slumped and looking at the ground without ever looking up.
For a moment I doubted if it was really him, because I swear I never saw such a different person, so sad and discouraged, after a while he crossed to a children's store, there he bought a doll and then continued on his way, after a few blocks he crossed the street, I stopped and saw him enter the cemetery.
I was a little sad, and I just thought about what a bad friend he was, Terry was always there for me, and I didn't even know when he had lost a family member, maybe he told us and we never heard it.
Hoy al salir del trabajo, tomé una ruta distinta para ir a casa, y por el camino, he visto a Terry a lo lejos, iba con los ojos hinchados y unas flores en las manos, parecía una persona completamente diferente a la que solemos ver en el trabajo, me preocupé un poco y lo seguí por un rato, iba caminando con los hombros caídos y mirando hacia el suelo sin levantar nunca la mirada.
Por un momento dudé si realmente era el, porque les juro que nunca vi una persona tan diferente, tan triste y desanimada, al cabo de un rato cruzó a una tienda de niños, ahí compró una muñeca y luego siguió su camino, al cabo de unas cuantas cuadras cruzó la calle, yo me detuve y lo vi entrar al cementerio.
Me invadió un poco la tristeza, y solo pensé en lo mal amigo que era, Terry siempre estaba para mi, y yo ni siquiera sabía cuando este había perdido a un familiar, quizá nos lo dijo y no lo escuchamos nunca.
This thought filled me with a lot of regret, and I felt too guilty to enter that place, so I stayed in that corner for a while, until I saw Terry leave, without the doll and the flowers, and he left that place.
I wanted to go in to see if there were other people, but there weren't, the cemetery was empty, and I could see the tombstone where Terry had put the flowers and that doll he bought in the store.

Reading that broke my heart into several pieces, Terry had lost his little 5 year old daughter, very recently and I, didn't even know it, I felt like someone had hit me hard in the head, I could only hear a dazed noise that wouldn't go away.
Este pensamiento me llenó de mucho pesar, y me sentí demasiado culpable como para entrar a aquel lugar, así que me quedé en aquella esquina por un rato, hasta que vi a Terry salir, sin la muñeca ni las flores, y se fue de aquel lugar.
Quise entrar para ver si habían otras personas, pero no lo habían, el cementerio estaba vacío, y pude ver la lápida donde Terry había puesto las flores y aquella muñeca que compró en la tienda.

Leer aquello me rompió el corazón en varios pedazos, Terry había perdido a su pequeña hija de 5 años, hace muy poco tiempo y yo, ni siquiera lo sabía, sentí como si alguien me hubiese golpeado fuerte en la cabeza, solo podía escuchar un ruido aturdido que no desaparecía.
After a while, I decided to go home, and call Terry on the phone, since I had been an idiot and didn't even approach him on the street when I saw him. I asked him how he was and he was happy exactly the same as always, being the most cheerful person in the world.
I started to tell him what had happened that day, how I had found out about his daughter and that I really regretted not being there for him in those hard times, but he didn't say a word, I knew I was making him uncomfortable, so I told him I would see him tomorrow.
I could not let that pass, so the next day at work I approached him and gave him a big hug, he came to greet me with that cheerful smile that characterized him, but when I hugged him, I felt him fall apart in my arms.
Luego de un rato, decidí irme a casa, y llamar a Terry por teléfono, ya que había sido un idiota y nisiquiera lo abordé en la calle cuando lo vi. Le pregunté cómo estaba y contento exactamente igual que siempre, siendo la persona más alegre del mundo.
Le comencé a contar lo que había ocurrido ese día, como me había enterado de lo de su hija y que realmentente lamentaba no haber estado para el en esos momentos tan duros, pero el no dijo ni una sola palabra, sabía que lo estaba incomodando, así que le dije que lo vería mañana.
No podía dejar pasar aquello, así que al día siguiente en el trabajo me le acerqué y le di un fuerte abrazo, el venía a saludarme con aquella sonrisa alegre que lo caracterizaba, pero cuando lo abracé, sentí como se caía a pedazos entre mis brazos.
Terry started to cry like a little boy, his cry was heartbreaking and I couldn't avoid shedding some tears too, I could feel how much pain he had inside and I couldn't help but hug him in silence for a while.
He confessed to me that in those months, it was the first time he told someone, it hurt him a lot to have lost his daughter, but the pain reminded him that he had been with her and that she had been the sweetest girl in the universe, the pain had become part of him, in her and for that reason, he considered it beautiful.
He was always a seemingly cheerful person, but inside he contained more pain than all of us put together, the thing was that he saw that pain in a very different way.
Sometimes, we are not good friends, we want to be heard but not listen, we should be good friends and dry the tears of others when necessary, take an interest in what happens to them and comfort them in times of pain. Even though our friends may seem fine, they are not always fine and listening to them is the only way to find out.
Terry comenzó a llorar como un pequeño, su llanto era desgarrador y no pude evitar soltar algunas lágrimas también, podía sentir cuanto dolor tenía dentro y no pude más que abrazarlo en silencio durante un rato.
Me confesó que en esos meses, era la primera vez que se lo contaba a alguien, le dolia mucho haber perdido a su hija, pero él dolor le recordaba que había estado con ella y que había sido la niña más dulce del universo, el dolor se había convertido en parte de él, en ella y por eso, lo consideraba bello.
Siempre fue una persona aparentemente alegre, pero que dentro contenía más dolor que todos nosotros juntos, la cosa era que el veía ese dolor de una manera muy distinta.
A veces, no somos buenos amigos, queremos ser escuchados pero no escuchar, debemos ser buenos amigos y secar las lágrimas de otros cuando sea necesario, interesarnos por lo que les pasa y consolarlo en los momentos de dolor. Aunque nuestros amigos, se vean aparentemente bien, no siempre lo están y escucharlos es la única manera de saberlo.
