When I was young, back in 1987, I used to hear from my grandmother the phrase "Find yourself a good man, get married and have children". She, my grandmother, was a peasant woman from the Venezuelan Andes, born in 1914. Used to being the matriarch of a large family, she always had the final word that was fulfilled by its members or, at least, that was what she expected.
Deep inside I knew it was not my destiny to marry and have children. There was something else out there calling me. It is that same voice that thousands of women have heard, those who have dared to break the paradigms imposed by the family and find their identity.
One day, at the age of 18, I decided to be different and I said to myself: "I want to". From that premise, I moved heaven and earth to achieve what I wanted; first of all, a college degree. It was not easy, as it has been for many, but not impossible. It was a real accomplishment to know that I was the first woman in my family to go to college.
In 1998 I moved from San Cristobal, Tachira State, to the capital of Venezuela, Caracas. I still remember how scared and lost I felt in this concrete jungle that often devoured me. The idiosyncrasy of the caraqueño versus the naivety of the shy and introspective
granddaughter of a peasant girl from the Andes took years to amalgamate.
Even so, I knew that in Caracas I would find what I wanted, and I did. Over the years I started working in a well-known insurance company: La Previsora. There began the most beautiful love story and passion I have ever lived: the relationship with my profession.
Five years later, in 2005, I met my mentor, a man with great knowledge in loss adjusting. At this point you may be wondering what that is? In a nutshell, it is a technique used to establish the actual value of the indemnity, considering the cause of loss, the contracted coverage and the valuation established in the policy conditions.
Let's go back to my mentor. He is gruff with words and also somewhat difficult to convince, but that did not break my desire. For more than six months I persistently asked him to teach me. I do not know if he refused because I was a woman or because he did not see in me the conditions to practice the profession. None of that mattered to me, the only thing I had in mind was that I wanted to learn what he did and one day after so much insistence he told me: "don't worry, I'll teach you".
Every afternoon, after work, we would meet in a café. The napkins became improvised notebooks. The discussions turned into classes on coverage, claims, causes, hypotheses, numbers, mathematical formulas and indemnity figures.
For the next six months, I became his unpaid pupil. Every inspection he went to, I followed him. And he did put me to the test during the inspection of a garbage compactor and when we had to witness the destruction of 1,400 kilos of rotten meat. Part of me wanted to run away from those nauseating places; while the other part of me kept repeating: "stay still, he is testing you". I still remember his laughter as we left those places.
In 2012 the Superintendence of Insurance granted me the authorization to practice independently. From that day on, we started to co-sign the adjustment reports that I had been writing for years. These signatures opened the doors of insurance companies, who until then only saw me as the adjuster's assistant.
In 2018, due to the economic crisis that Venezuelans were going through, my mentor and colleague left Venezuela. He is now an adjuster in Costa Rica. The duo known as "Batman and Robin" or "Pinky and Cerebro", as some analysts affectionately called us, ceased to exist. At that moment I thought: "and what am I going to do, now it's just me: a woman in an ocean led by men".
The Superintendency of Insurance has eight hundred and thirty adjusters registered, all of them active. Of that total, only fifty-nine of us are women. So I thought: "How are they going to hire me if they can hire the remaining seven hundred and seventy-one male adjusters?
Despite this scenario and with portfolio in hand, I decided to bet on what I knew how to do and do it independently. Despite the incredible sabotage of my mind, I currently work independently for three insurance companies.

AHORA EN ESPAÑOL
De joven, por allá en 1987, escuchaba de mi abuela la frase “Búscate un buen hombre, cásate y ten hijos”. Ella, mi abuela, era una mujer campesina de los andes venezolanos, nacida en 1914. Acostumbrada a ser la matriarca de una numerosa familia, siempre tenía la palabra final que era cumplida por sus integrantes o, por lo menos, eso era lo que ella esperaba.
En mi interior sabía que no era mi destino casarme y tener hijos. Había algo más allá afuera que me llamaba. Es esa misma voz que han escuchado miles de mujeres, las que se han atrevido a romper los paradigmas impuestos por la familia y encontrar su identidad.
Un buen día, a mis 18 años, decidí ser diferente y me dije: “yo quiero”. A partir de esa premisa, moví cielo y tierra para lograr lo que quería; primero que nada, un título universitario. No fue fácil, como a muchas les ha ocurrido, pero no imposible. Fue un verdadero logro saber que fui la primera mujer de mi familia en ir a la universidad.
En 1998 me mudé de San Cristóbal, Edo. Táchira, a la capital de Venezuela, Caracas. Todavía recuerdo lo asustada y perdida que me sentía ante esta selva de concreto que muchas veces me devoró. La idiosincrasia del caraqueño versus la ingenuidad de la nieta de una campesina de los andes, tímida e introspectiva, tardaron años en amalgamar.
Aun así sabía que en Caracas encontraría lo que quería y así fue. Con los años comencé a trabajar en una reconocida empresa de seguros: La Previsora. Ahí comenzó la historia de amor y pasión más linda que he vivido: la relación con mi profesión.
Cinco años después, en el año 2005, conocí a mi mentor, un hombre con un gran conocimiento en el ajuste de pérdidas o siniestros. En este momento te preguntarás ¿qué es eso? En pocas palabras, es una técnica que se utiliza para establecer el valor real de la indemnización, considerando la causa del siniestro, la cobertura contratada y la valuación establecida en las condiciones de la póliza.
Volvamos a mi mentor. Él es brusco de palabra y también un tanto difícil de convencer, pero eso no quebrantó mi deseo. Durante más de seis meses le pedí con insistencia que me enseñara. No sé si se negaba porque era una mujer o porque no veía en mí las condiciones para ejercer la profesión. Nada de eso me importó, lo único que tenía en mente era que quería aprender lo que él hacía y un día luego de tanta insistencia me dijo: “tranquila, yo te enseño”.
Todas las tardes, luego del trabajo, nos reuníamos en un café. Las servilletas se convirtieron en improvisados cuadernos de notas. Las tertulias en clases de coberturas, siniestros, causas, hipótesis, números, fórmulas matemáticas y cifras indemnizantes.
Durante los siguientes seis meses, me volví su pupila sin remuneración. A cuanta inspección iba, yo lo seguía. Y sí que me puso a prueba durante la inspección de una compactadora de basura y cuando tuvimos que presenciar la destrucción de 1.400 kilos de carne podrida. Una parte de mí quería salir corriendo de esos lugares nauseabundos; mientras que la otra parte de mí repetía: “quédate quieta, te está poniendo a prueba”. Todavía recuerdo sus carcajadas al salir de esos sitios.
En el año 2012 la Superintendencia de Seguros me otorgó la autorización para ejercer de manera autónoma. Desde ese día comenzamos a firmar en conjunto los informes de ajustes que, desde hacía años, yo redactaba. Esas firma me abrió las puertas de las empresas de seguros, quienes hasta ese momento solo me veían como la auxiliar del ajustador.
En el año 2018 y ante la crisis económica que atravesábamos los venezolanos, mi mentor y compañero de profesión abandonó Venezuela. Ahora es ajustador en Costa Rica. La dupla conocida como “Batman y Robin” o “Pinky y Cerebro”, como cariñosamente algunos analistas nos llamaban, dejó de existir. En ese momento pensé: "¿y cómo voy a hacer?, ahora solo soy yo: una mujer en un océano liderado por hombres".
La Superintendencia de Seguros tiene registrados a ochocientos treinta ajustadores, todos activos. De ese total tan solo cincuenta y nueve somos mujeres. Así que pensé: "¿cómo me van a contratar si pueden contratar a los restantes setecientos setenta y un ajustadores hombres?".
A pesar de ese panorama y con carpeta en mano decidí apostar a lo que sabía hacer y hacerlo de forma independiente. Pese al increíble saboteo de mi mente, actualmente trabajo de forma independiente para tres compañías de seguros.
