A Great Game...
Splinterlands is one of the most successful and well-known blockchain games, with hundreds of thousands of registered players. The development team should be incredibly proud of their accomplishment.
I have been playing Splinterlands for about a year and a half, and during that time, I have come to appreciate the game. I have been constantly improving my collection and trying to access higher leagues to increase the challenge and satisfaction derived from each victory.
While I have seen many of the strengths of the game, such as the incredible control over one's collection, I have also noticed some flaws.
One of the most significant issues, in my opinion, is the increasing problem of bots.
... Not Without Flaws
It's not necessary to explain what bots are in this context, as I believe every player on Splinterlands has at least a basic understanding of how they work. It's also not necessary to emphasize their large presence in matchmaking or their impressive gaming abilities. However, it's worth noting that bots:
- represent a significant portion of the player population
- are capable of playing at very high levels, often placing themselves among the top spots in all leagues.
I don't want to delve into whether bots are a problem or not, as opinions on this topic are divided. However, it's undeniable that many players dislike their presence and even more have quit the game due to the frustration of constantly playing against them. A large number of new players hardly even try the game before quitting due to the constant defeats at the hands of bots.
What I want to explore in this post is if it's possible to find a compromise between bots and human players.
Why a Compromise?
It's my belief, based on my 20 years of experience as a video gamer, that a game cannot function in the long term if it is flooded with bots. This is not debatable. I have never seen a game that did not try everything possible (and impossible) to prevent the use of bots and programs that automate the game. However, I recognize that at the current stage, trying to eliminate bots suddenly is utopian and potentially suicidal for the entire game.
This is because the owners of bots have accumulated large amounts of in-game assets. If they saw their earning system completely dismantled, they may decide to liquidate all their assets. This would result in a market flooded with cards, SPS, DEC and other assets, with demand unable to stem the huge selling pressure. Prices would likely collapse and more and more people would try to sell everything before losing any residual value, which would lead to disastrous results.
Furthermore, the game population would suffer a huge reduction, giving the false impression that the game is in decline.
That's why I think the only way to move forward is by resorting to a positive sum compromise.
An Orange and a Win-Win Compromise
Before I present my idea, I would like to explain what a "win-win compromise" is: with this definition, I mean an agreement in which both parties do not have to give up part of what they would like, but instead reach an agreement where, in the end, both parties achieve a complete satisfaction of their interests.
To understand better, I'll give an example that I read once in one of my study books.
There are two mothers, both with two children, who find themselves having to solve the same situation: their respective children, in fact, argue over an orange; both children desire it, but, apparently, only one of them can have it.
The first mother, after evaluating the situation, takes the orange, cuts it in half and gives it to the children, so that both have half. The children, faced with the solution, do not rejoice, but resume their argument, because both want the whole orange.
The second mother, on the other hand, before making a decision, poses a question to the children and asks them: "why does each of you want this orange so much?"
To which one child answers "to make a juice," while the other "to use the peel to make a dessert."
At this point, the second mother takes the orange, peels it and gives the peel to one child and the rest of the fruit to the other child.
Both, thus, leave content, having obtained exactly what they wanted.
This story teaches us that different interests can also be satisfied simultaneously, if one does not start from the assumption that their difference makes them necessarily incompatible.
Getting to the Point (Finally!)
My idea is simple, and it aims to find a compromise that satisfies both parties involved:
- on one hand, human players who don't want to see the reward pools constantly depleted and don't enjoy losing repeatedly against bots;
- on the other hand, the owners of bots who have invested significant capital and resources into a game that has always explicitly allowed the use of bots.
Finding a solution to this impasse isn't easy, but there is already a similar case in the video game landscape that we can draw inspiration from for Splinterlands.
Chess
In recent years, the popularity of chess has grown significantly, particularly thanks to the availability of online platforms that allow players from all over the world to compete at any time. However, this growth has also led to new challenges, such as the widespread use of chess engines by players.
To address this issue, the chess community has decided to prohibit the use of engines in games between humans. However, they also recognize the potential benefits of these engines for the future development of the game.
As a result, tournaments exclusively dedicated to engines, also known as bots and artificial intelligences, have been created. These tournaments allow engines to compete against each other and win cash prizes. Furthermore, the creators of the winning bots also receive monetary rewards.
These tournaments have gained recognition and popularity among audiences, who view them as a unique form of chess. While they may not involve human players, they are still considered spectacular due to the capabilities of engines to play at a level beyond human capabilities.
Splinterlands
Splinterlands could take inspiration from the world of chess and become the first blockchain game to be bot-friendly, and potentially, AI-friendly.
We all can see the growing importance that AI is starting to have in our world and the interest it generates more and more in the general public - just think of the recent examples like ChatGPT and MidJourney.
Splinterlands could use this new and emerging trend to solve its problem with bots, while satisfying most of the interests at stake:
- bots should be excluded from matchmaking for human players, but a PvE-like system could be inserted to provide an opponent for a player if the matchmaking is taking too long;
- bots could continue to play in a matchmaking exclusively for them, which would have its own pool of rewards, in order to encourage developers to propose their own bot, so as to obtain a share of the rewards;
- owners of large collections could continue to delegate their cards to these bots and, for the excess, they could use human players through services such as that offered by @nfty-arcade.
In the "Bot Format," it would also be a good idea to allow each developer to deploy a single bot per League - and not thousands - in order to avoid that a single very good developer obtains all the prizes, pushing others to find ways to play in the matchmaking reserved for human players.
Incentivizing the use of a single bot per developer could be achieved by awarding prizes based on a ranking system that takes into account the ELO score reached at the end of the season, similar to how DEC prizes are currently awarded to players who reach the highest positions in the different leagues. The owner of each bot would need to prove the uniqueness of their bot in case of winning a prize.
To Conclude
My proposed solution is not, of course, perfect and there may be many issues and flaws that I am not aware of. However, I have been thinking about this for some time and wanted to share my ideas.
I believe that addressing the problem of bots should be a priority for the team, and I would like to hear the thoughts of other players on the solution I presented. Perhaps through this dialogue, a better idea can be born and ultimately, a compromise that truly satisfies everyone can be reached.

Un Grande Gioco...
Splinterlands è uno dei giochi su blockchain più famosi e di successo in assoluto, con centinaia di migliaia di utenti registrati: su questo non ci sono dubbi ed il team di sviluppo non può che esserne incredibilmente fiero.
Io gioco a Splinterlands da circa un anno e mezzo e, in questo lasso di tempo, ho imparato ad apprezzare il gioco, migliorando sempre più la mia collezione e cercando di accedere a leghe sempre più alte, per aumentare sia la sfida che la soddisfazione derivante da ogni singola vittoria.
Sebbene abbia quindi potuto vedere tanti dei pregi che il gioco offre - ed in primis l'incredibile controllo che consente sulla propria collezione - al contempo non ho potuto fare a meno di notare alcuni difetti.
E tra questi, uno, secondo me, emerge da tempo come un sempre più grave problema del gioco: i bot.
... Non Esente da Difetti
Non è questa la sede per spiegare cosa siano i bot, anche perchè credo che ogni giocatore su Splinterlands abbia almeno una vaga idea di come funzionino, nè per sottolineare la loro enorme presenza nel matchmaking o le loro impressionanti capacità di gioco.
A riguardo voglio solo mettere in evidenza come i bot:
- rappresentino una fetta ENORME della popolazione di gioco;
- siano capaci di giocare a livelli altissimi, posizionandosi tra i primi posti di tutte le leghe.
Non voglio neanche entrare nel merito del sè i bot siano o meno un problema, perchè sul punto esistono opinioni contrastanti, ma penso sia innegabile che tantissimi giocatori detestano la loro presenza ed ancora di più hanno abbandonato il gioco per la frustrazione di trovarsi a giocare costantemente contro di essi: una mole enorme di nuovi giocatori ha a malapena provato il gioco, prima di addandonarlo a causa delle incessanti sconfitte subite ad opera dei bot.
Quello che invece voglio chiedermi in questo post è se sia possibile arrivare ad un compromesso tra bot e giocatori umani.
Perchè un Compromesso?
Sul presupposto che un gioco non può funzionare sul lungo termine se inondato di bot - cosa che non credo sia contestabile, dato che nella mia esperienza di videogiocatore ormai ventennale non ho mai visto nemmeno un gioco che non facesse il possibile (e l'impossibile) per impedire l'utilizzo di bot e programmi che consentissero di automatizzare il gioco - ciò nonostante non posso fare a meno di riconoscere che, allo stato attuale, semplicemente pensare di poter eliminare di colpo i bot sia utopico e, probabilmente, potenzialmente un suicidio per l'intero gioco.
Questo perchè i proprietari dei bot hanno accumulato quantità di asset di gioco enormi e, se vedessero il loro sistema di guadagno venire completamente smantellato, potrebbero decidere di liquidare tutti i loro assets. Ci ritroveremmo, di colpo, con un mercato inondato di carte, SPS, DEC ed altri assets, con una domanda incapace di arginare queste enorme pressione di vendita. Probabilmente i prezzi crollerebbero e sempre più persone cercherebbero di vendere tutto prima di perdere ogni valore residuo... insomma, sarebbe una spirale inarrestabile che condurrebbe a risultati disastrosi.
Inoltre, la popolazione di gioco subirebbe una riduzione enorme, contribuendo a dare la - falsa - impressione di un gioco in fortissimo declino.
Per questo penso che l'unico modo per andare avanti sia ricorrendo ad un compromesso a somma positiva.
Un'Arancia

Prima di esporre la mia idea, vorrei però spiegare cosa è un compromesso "a somma positiva": con tale definizione indico, infatti, un accordo in cui le due parti non devono, ciascuna, rinunciare ad una parte di ciò che vorrebbero (win-lose o lose-lose), ma giungono, diversamente, ad un accordo in cui, alla fine, entrambe ottengono una completa soddisfazione dei loro interessi (win-win).
Per capirsi meglio, propongo un esempio che lessi una volta in un mio libro di studio.
Ci sono due mamme, entrambe con due figli, che si trovano a dover risolvere la stessa situazione: i rispettivi figli, infatti, litigano per una arancia; entrambi i bambini la desiderano, ma, apparentemente, solo uno di loro può averla.
La prima mamma, dopo aver valutato la situazione, prende l'arancia, la taglia a metà e la porge ai figli, di modo che entrambi ne abbiamo mezza. I figli, di fronte alla soluzione, non gioiscono, ma riprendono la loro discussione, perchè entrambi voglio l'intera arancia.
La seconda mamma, invece, prima di prendere una decisione, porge una domanda ai figli e chiede loro: "perchè ognuno di voi vuole così tanto questa arancia?"
Al che un figlio risponde "per farci una spremuta", mentre l'altro "per usarne la scorza per fare un dolce".
A questo punto la seconda mamma prende l'arancia, la sbuccia e porge la buccia ad un figlio ed il resto del frutto all'altro bambino.
Entrambi, così, se ne vanno contenti, avendo ottenuto esattamente quello che volevano.
Questa storia ci insegna, quindi, che, talvolta, interessi diversi possono anche essere soddisfatti contemporaneamente, se non si parte dal presupposto che la loro diversità li renda necessariamente incompatibili.
Arriviamo al Dunque (Finalmente!)
La mia idea, perciò, è semplice e parte dal tentativo di cercare di soddisfare entrambe le parti in gioco:
da un lato, i giocatori umani, che non vogliono vedere svuotare costantemente le pools di ricompense nè ci tengono particolarmente a perdere ripetutamene contro i bot;
dall'altro, i proprietari dei bot, che hanno investito capitali e risorse ingenti in un gioco che - ricordiamolo - ha espressamente sempre consentito l'utilizzo di bot.
Risolvere questa impasse non è semplice, ma esiste, secondo me, già un caso simile nel panorama videoludico, da cui è possibile trarre ispirazione anche per Splinterlands.
Gli Scacchi
Negli ultimi anni si è, infatti, assistito ad una crescita enorme del fenomeno scacchistico, soprattutto grazie alla presenza di siti che consentono a chiunque a giro per il mondo di giocare in ogni momento online.
L'enorme crescita ha però anche comportato l'emergere di nuovi problemi, quale l'utilizzo sempre più massiccio di engine da parte dei giocatori.
Di fronte alla crescente e sempre maggior forza di questi engine, il mondo degli scacchi ha sì reagito considerandone l'uso proibito nelle partite fra umani, ma, al contempo, ne ha riconosciuto l'utilità per la inevitabile futura evoluzione del gioco stesso.
Sono così nati dei veri e propri tornei, anche internazionali, esclusivamente dedicati agli engine, e quindi ai bot ed alle intelligenze artificiali: qui, questi possono gareggiare fra di loro e vincere premi in denaro - o, meglio, a vincere il denaro sono, naturalmente, coloro che hanno progettato il bot.
Questi tornei sono riconosciuti e seguiti dal pubblico, che vede in essi un tipo diverso di scacchi: meno umano, sì, ma non meno spettacolare, grazie alle capacità degli engine di giocare a livelli ormai irraggiungibili per l'essere umano.
Splinterlands
Splinterlands potrebbe trarre esempio da tutto questo e diventare il primo gioco su blockchain bot-friendly e, potenzialmente, AI-friendly.
Tutti, penso, abbiamo visto l'importanza crescente che le AI cominciano ad avere sempre più nel nostro mondo e l'interesse che generano sempre più nel grande pubblico - basti pensare ai recenti ChatGPT e MidJourney).
Splinterlands potrebbe, perciò, utilizzare questo nuovo ed emergente trend per risolvere il proprio problema con i bot, contemporaneamente soddisfacendo gran parte degli interessi in gioco:
- i bot dovrebbero sì venir esclusi dal matchmaking, ma solo da quello riservato agli umani (in cui, invece, potrebbe essere inserito un sistema simil-PvE per fornire un avversario ad un giocatore qualora il matchmaking stia impiegando troppo tempo);
- i bot potrebbero continuare a giocare in un matchmaking esclusivamente loro, il quale avrebbe una pool di ricompense tutta sua, onde incentivare gli sviluppatori a proporre il proprio bot, così da ottenere una fetta delle ricompense;
- i proprietari di grandi collezioni potrebbero continuare a delegare le proprie carte a questi bot e, per l'eccedenza, potrebbero servirsi di giocatori umani tramite servizi quale quello offerto da @nfty-arcade.
Nel "Formato dei bot" sarebbe inoltre una buona idea consentire ad ogni sviluppatore di schierare un solo bot per Lega - e non migliaia - in modo da evitare che un solo sviluppatore molto bravo ottenga tutti i premi, spingendo gli altri a trovare dei modi per giocare nel matchmaking riservato ai giocatori umani.
Per incentivare l'utilizzo di un solo bot, i premi potrebbero essere attribuiti, in buona parte, sulla base di una classifica basata sul punteggio ELO raggiunto a fine stagione (stile quanto già avviene con i premi in DEC a fine stagione per coloro che hanno raggiunto le posizioni più alte delle varie leghe), con il proprietario di ogni bot che dovrebbe - in caso di vincita di un premio - dimostrare l'unicità del proprio bot.
Per Concludere
La soluzione che ho immaginato non è, ovviamente, perfetta: sicuramente ci sono tanti problemi e difetti che non vedo, ma era da tanto che ci pensavo e volevo provare a descriverla.
Secondo me risolvere il problema dei bot dovrebbe essere una delle priorità del team e mi piacerebbe conoscere l'opinione di altri giocatori in merito alla soluzione che ho descritto: da una idea potrebbe nascerne un'altra e, magari, alla fine, potrebbe essere possibile trovare un compromesso che davvero riesca a soddisfare tutti quanti!
