A few days ago there was a major update in Splinterlands, which introduced the new game mode “Survival” to the game. This mode runs separately from the two ranked modes Modern and Wild and also works slightly differently. You don't need any energy to play here and you currently only receive SPS and no Glint as a reward. But what makes this mode so special is the following: If one of your cards that you use in the battle is defeated by your opponent, it takes a certain amount of time before it can be used again. And this applies to all modes! But I don't want to go much deeper into the Survival Mode, if you want to know more, you can read the Introduction Post.
Today I want to write more about how I approach Survival mode and show you my strategy on my first steps. Although I only have just over 300k Collection Power and therefore don't have too many cards, I still want to see if the mode is worthwhile for me. At the end, I would like to present my opinion on the mode. Have fun reading!
My Preparation
Of course, you can simply start Survival mode without any preparation. However, it is then very annoying if your strongest cards are defeated and you can no longer use them for several days. This risk is definitely not worth it for me. That's why you should think carefully about which cards you play and which you can risk losing.
The developers of Splinterlands have introduced a great new function with this mode. In theory, you can decide for each individual card whether you want to play it in Survival mode or not. By default, all cards can be played in Survival mode. If this is the case, the symbol, as in the red square, is highlighted in yellow. However, if you click on it, this card is no longer playable in survival mode and the symbol is grayed out, as shown in the blue square. This way you can protect your valuable cards.
I've thought about deselecting the highest leveled card from every card I own for Survival mode so that I can't lose it. This way, I can always play my best cards in the other modes and can play with the remaining cards in Survival mode without worrying, as I don't care if they are defeated by my opponent. However, this means that I only have cards at the first level (or Gold cards at the next level, depending on rarity) available to me in Survival mode.
It took me a while, about an hour, to click through all the cards, but I was on the safe side and my best cards could not be defeated. This allowed me to venture into the first combats in Survival mode.
My Battle Strategies
I don't have one battle strategy, but use several tactics. One of them reminds me of the motto “blunt is trump” and I often use it in tournaments with a low level cap. If the matchup allows it, I simply play Lobb Lowland or Helios Matriarch as a summoner and Quora Towershead. Preferably in combination with Venari Marksrat or Fungus Flinger, so that Quora Towershead can benefit from the ability Martyr. For example, I used this strategy in this Battle against @bdepppt and was able to win.
Since I can only play cards at the first level, or through the gold cards also at the next level, you have to rely on cards that are already very strong at the first level. This is another strategy I used in this Battle against @mgb1. Cursed Windeku is simply an incredibly good card thanks to the Thorns ability and strong stats. And thanks to the relatively new card Arachne Weaver and the Corrupted Healing ability, Cursed Windeku benefits from strong heals.
Another part of my strategy is to lose some battles more or less on purpose and only use one summoner and one monster at a time, both of which are expendable. I do that when I see that my opponent has a lot more Collection Power than I do and I have to assume that I won't stand a chance anyway. That's what I did in this Battle against @moertoe, because he had about 6 million Collection Power and I had already played against him shortly before, where he used maximum leveled cards. He did the same in this battle (I think using a maxed Byzantine Kitty is very brave) and I only lost expendable cards.
My opinion on the Survial mode
I think Survival Mode is a great addition to Splinterlands. I see a lot of players currently buying cards because they simply need more to be competitive in Survival mode. And that can only be good for the prices of Splinterlands cards. However, I have to say that Survival mode is not for me personally. This is simply because I'm a rather small fish and simply don't own many cards, especially not leveled cards, for this mode.
I also think the rewards are too low for the effort involved and the risk of temporarily losing the cards. For example, I only received 0.075 SPS in my last victory. That's very little, especially when you consider that I'm already around rank 380 with a rating of 180. And I also hear from other players that the rewards are only worthwhile if you are one of the best players in the ranking. And you'd have to invest a lot in cards for that.
What I don't like at all is that you sometimes have to play against players with a much higher rating. The matchmaking isn't really mature yet, but that's probably because there aren't that many players playing the mode yet. In this battle, for example, I had to play against @stiant, who had almost 500 rating points more than me. Fortunately, I realized that I had no chance in this battle and only played expendable cards, but it's still annoying.
Then there are also a few other little things about Survival mode that I don't like so much. For example, I spend a long time looking for enemies, sometimes three minutes or more, even though I still have a very low rating. Another thing I don't like at all is that bots are allowed in survival mode. I'm fundamentally against bots in video games, but that's another story.
Last Words
Even if my last sentences sounded very negative, I don't think the new Survival mode is bad. It's just not for me personally or for my card collection. Nevertheless, if I have time, I'll try out the mode a bit more and possibly adapt my strategies.

Dieser Modus läuft getrennt von den beiden Ranked Modis Modern und Wild und funktioniert auch etwas anders. So braucht man um hier zu spielen keine Energie und man erhält aktuell nur SPS und keine Glint als Belohnung. Was diesen Modus aber so besonders macht, ist folgendes: Wenn eine Karte von euch, die ihr in dem Battle einsetzt, vom Gegner besiegt wird, dauert es eine gewisse Zeit, bis sie wieder eingesetzt werden kann. Und das gilt für alle Modis! Ich will aber nicht sehr viel tiefer in den Survival Modus einsteigen, wenn ihr mehr wissen wollt, könnt ihr den Introduction Post lesen.
Ich möchte heute eher mehr darüber schreiben, wie ich den Survial Modus angehe und möchte euch meine Strategie auf meinen ersten Schritten zeigen. Ich besitze zwar nur etwas mehr als 300k Collection Power und besitze dementsprechend nicht allzu viele Karten, trotzdem will ich schauen, ob sich der Modus für mich lohnt. Am Ende möchte ich dann noch meine Einschätzung zu dem Modus vorstellen. Viel Spaß beim Lesen!
Meine Vorbereitung
Man kann natürlich einfach ohne irgendeine Vorbereitung in den Survival Modus starten. Jedoch ist es dann sehr ärgerlich, wenn deine stärksten Karten besiegt werden und du diese dann für mehrere Tage nicht mehr nutzen kannst. Dieses Risiko ist es für mich definitiv nicht wert. Deswegen sollte man sich genau überlegen, welche Karten man spielt und welche man riskieren kann zu verlieren.
Dafür haben die Entwickler von Splinterlands mit dem Modus eine tolle neue Funktion mit eingeführt. Und zwar kann man theoretisch bei jeder einzelnen Karte entscheiden, ob man diese im Survival Modus spielen möchte oder nicht. Standardmäßig können alle Karten im Survival Modus gespielt werden. Wenn das der Fall ist, ist das Symbol, wie im roten Viereck, gelb markiert. Klickt man jedoch darauf, dann ist diese Karte nicht mehr spielbar im Survival Modus und das Symbol ist ausgegraut, wie im blauen Viereck zu sehen. So kann man quasi seine wertvollen Karten schützen.
Ich habe mir überlegt, dass ich von jeder Karte, die ich besitze, die am höchsten gelevelte Karte für den Survival Modus abwähle, sodass ich sie nicht verlieren kann. So kann ich meine besten Karten immer in den anderen Modis spielen und kann unbesorgt im Survival Modus mit den restlichen Karten spielen, da es mir egal ist, wenn sie vom Gegner besiegt werden. Allerdings stehen mir dadurch im Survival Modus nur Karten auf dem ersten Level (bzw. Gold Karten auf dem nächsten Level, je nach Seltenheit) zur Verfügung.
Es hat zwar eine Weile gedauert, ca. eine Stunde, bis ich mich durch alle Karten durchgeklickt habe, jedoch war ich dadurch auf der sicheren Seite und meine besten Karten konnten nicht besiegt werden. Damit konnte ich mich in die ersten Kämpe im Survival Modus wagen.
Meine Battle Strategien
Ich habe nicht die eine Battle Strategie, sondern wende mehrere Taktiken an. Eine davon erinnert mich an das Motto "Stumpf ist Trumpf" und ich nutze sie auch häufig in Turnieren mit niedrigen Levelcap. Und zwar spiele ich hierbei, wenn es das Matchup erlaubt, einfach Lobb Lowland oder Helios Matriarch als Summoner und Quora Towershead. Am besten dann noch in Kombination mit Venari Marksrat oder Fungus Flinger, sodass Quora Towershead von der Ability Martyr profitieren kann. So habe ich zum Beispiel auch in diesem Battle gegen @bdepppt diese Strategie angewendet und konnte gewinnen.
Da ich nur Karten auf dem ersten Level, bzw. durch die Gold Karten auch auf dem nächsten Level, spielen kann, muss man sich auf Karten verlassen, die schon auf dem ersten Level sehr stark sind. Das ist eine andere Strategie, wie ich sie in diesem Battle gegen @mgb1 angewendet habe. Cursed Windeku ist dank der Thorns Ability und den starken Stats einfach eine unfassbare gute Karte. Und dank der relativ neuen Karte Arachne Weaver und der Corrupted Healing Ability, profitiert Cursed Windeku von starken Heals.
Was auch irgendwo zu meiner Strategie gehört, ist manche Battles mehr oder weniger absichtlich zu verlieren und nur jeweils einen Summoner und ein Monster einzusetzen, welche beide entbehrlich sind. Das tue ich dann, wenn ich sehe, dass mein Gegner ein vielfaches mehr an Collection Power als ich besitzt und ich davon ausgehen muss, dass ich sowieso keine Chance haben werde. So habe ich es auch in diesem Battle gegen @moertoe getan, da er ca. 6 Million Collection Power hatte und ich schon kurz davor gegen ihn gespielt habe, wo er maximal gelevelte Karten nutzte. Das hat er auch in diesem Battle getan (ein maximal geleveltes Byzantine Kitty zu nutzen finde ich sehr mutig) und ich habe nur entbehrliche Karten verloren.
Meine Meinung zum Survial Modus
Ich denke der Survival Modus ist eine tolle Ergänzung in Splinterlands. Ich sehe viele Spieler, die aktuell Karten kaufen, da sie einfach mehr brauchen, um im Survival Modus konkurrenzfähig zu sein. Und das kann nur gut für die Preise von Splinterlands Karten sein. Jedoch muss ich sagen, dass der Survival Modus für mich persönlich nichts ist. Das liegt ganz einfach daran, dass ich ein eher kleinerer Fisch bin und einfach wenig Karten, vor allem keine gelevelten Karten, für diesen Modus besitze.
Auch die Rewards sind meinem Geschmack nach, für diesen Aufwand und das Risiko die Karten temporär zu verlieren, zu niedrig. So habe ich zum Beispiel bei meinem letzten Sieg lediglich 0,075 SPS erhalten. Das ist sehr wenig, vor allem wenn man bedenkt, dass ich mit dem Rating von 180 schon ca. auf Rang 380 bin. Und auch von anderen Spielern höre ich, dass sich die Rewards nur wenn man einer der besten Spieler im Ranking ist lohnen. Und dafür müsste man einiges in Karten investieren.
Was mir ganz und gar nicht gefällt, ist das man teilweise gegen Spieler mit einem viel höheren Rating spielen muss. Das Matchmaking ist also noch nicht so wirklich ausgereift, liegt aber vermutlich auch daran, dass noch nicht so viele Spieler den Modus spielen. In diesem Battle musste ich zum Beispiel gegen @stiant spielen, welcher fast 500 Rating Punkte mehr als ich hatte. Ich habe glücklicherweise gesehen, dass ich in diesem Battle keine Chance habe und habe nur entbehrliche Karten gespielt, trotzdem ist es ärgerlich.
Dann gibt es auch noch ein paar andere Kleinigkeiten am Survival Modus, die mir nicht so sehr gefallen. Zum Beispiel suche ich sehr lange nach Gegnern, teilweise drei Minuten und länger und das obwohl ich noch ein sehr niedriges Rating besitze. Was mir auch ganz und gar nicht gefällt ist, dass im Survival Modus Bots erlaubt sind. Ich bin grundsätzlich gegen Bots in Videospielen, aber das ist eine andere Geschichte.
Letzte Worte
Auch wenn sich meine letzten Sätze sehr negativ angehört haben, finde ich den neuen Survival Modus nicht schlecht. Er ist einfach nichts für mich persönlich und für meine Kartensammlung. Ich werde mich trotzdem, wenn ich Zeit habe, etwas weiter an dem Modus probieren und eventuell auch meine Strategien anpassen.
