Greetings to all Splinterlands players! In this week's Social Media Challenge, we will look into the the new free-to-play or f2p format in Splinterlands or better known as The Frontier.
I have been playing the Frontier Format is since it was launched. It's a completely free to play mode. A player just needs Foundation cards to play this format. If you're a beginner, you will find it challenging but fun to play as you complete the daily missions and gather more cards to upgrade the initial deck of Foundation cards you earned from the campaign missions.
The campaign missions is called Book 1 - Waur Medge Academy.
The Campaign Mission in Splinterlands is a player vs environment (PvE) mode of play. Each campaign mission is a pre-built battle scenario where players must strategically use a limited set of cards to defeat a carefully crafted enemy team. It has an increasing degree of difficulty and fun to play and learn about Splinterlands system of battle. The last two missions were especially difficult and I wrote guides on how to beat them. However, in a recent update posted on discord, the last two missions were made easier.
Playing in the Frontier Format
What makes the Frontier Format challenging but fair game is that all players only use the Foundation cards. This means that players don't gain any advantage from previous collections that they have. Everyone starts from the same set and upgrade that set from continually playing the game by earning more card rewards.
For beginners, here are two of my games in the Frontier and how I choose my teams.
Noxious Fumes
The ruleset in this game was Noxious Fumes. All units start the battle in poisoned state and gets poison damage in every turn. In Noxious Fumes, you will need a team with high life and has the skills Cleanse or Immunity. The best team to use is the Earth element because it has a unit that can heal itself and has a unit with Cleanse skill. Cleanse skill removes all magic debuffs including poison from allied units in the first position. In this game, I placed the healing unit in first position. If you can remember, he is the first unit we got in the campaign. The second unit is the one with Cleanse skill, Time Bandit. Other units have high life and high attacks.
My opponent placed the healer unit in last. This is not an unusual strategy, in fact, it's a viable one. Players do this to avoid the healer unit from taking damage in the frontline. His strategy is to save his toughest unit for last in a one on one battle where his last unit has higher life than mine. But in this game, my units have higher attack with two or three while the opponent's units only have one attack. This is enough to give my team the advantage and won the game.

Countering the Vengeful Monk
The Vengeful Monk is one of the key pieces in the Foundation set. It has two attacks and Opportunity skill. It can hunt down units with low lives and remove them from the game easily. You can turn his Opportunity skill against him by using one unit: Spellmonger. The Spellmonger has one life making him a target for the Vengeful Monk but he can counter the Monk with his Thorns skill. The Thorns skill Returns 2 Physical damage to melee attackers. This means that the Vengeful Monk will also die when he hits the Spellmonger.
In the game, I noticed the enemy likes to use the Vengeful Monk a lot. So I crafted my team to include the Spellmonger. We almost have the same units but he used the Black Widow while I used the Spellmonger and Kanaaq Miner. In the game, his Vengeful Monk died while mine was still in battle. I was able to remove one of his powerful pieces while retaining mine. This gave my team the advantage and won the game.
