If there's one thing that has always intrigued me about Splinterlands and sets it apart from the balancing of older collections, it's how the ALPHA and BETA cards, despite being historic and valuable, end up being forgotten when it comes to real competitiveness within the game.
If you've played enough, you know these cards are practically relics. Some were widely used in the past, like Alric Stormbringer or the legendary Archmage Arius.
This happens because the game has evolved. The new Rebellion cards, for example, came with abilities that make any Alpha seem like an outdated option. Seriously, some creatures can’t even be compared. Today, many new cards already come with two or three distinct abilities from level one, while the older ones have to level up several times just to unlock something truly useful. And I won’t even get into the new Summoners that allow mixing elements, creating crazy combinations and strategies that ALPHA and BETA cards could never even dream of.
And that brings up the big question.
What to do with these cards?
Because, let’s be honest, for a collector, it’s fine they are valuable and part of the game's history. But for competitive players, it’s a different story. When you enter a Modern mode match, you already know your old collection is practically useless. In Wild mode, they can still be used, but the problem is that Wild also allows all other collections. And guess what?
Newer cards continue to dominate because they simply have more resources and versatility.
Of course, there are tournaments that try to give value to specific collections, but let’s be real, they are few.
And when they do appear, they often still include Rebellion and other newer cards, which already puts the older ones at a disadvantage. So, would the best solution be to create a new battle mode exclusively for ALPHA and BETA collections? Something like a third format besides Wild and Modern?
If there were a mode where only these collections were allowed, the game would gain a new layer of strategy.
It would be a way to bring life to these cards without forcing them to compete against much more modern and overpowered abilities. And the most interesting part is that this could generate new market interest, as many of these cards could finally gain practical relevance beyond their collector’s value.
Now, of course, this isn’t a perfect idea.
Any change of this kind would need to be carefully planned to avoid completely unbalancing the game.
The first problem would be accessibility.
Many new players have never had access to these cards, and if this new format were created, it could become a closed environment for those who already own these relics. So, unless there was a way to facilitate access (maybe an exclusive rental system for this mode?), we might end up creating a bubble where only veterans can compete.
Another important point is the motivation of players. Many joined Splinterlands after these collections were already out of circulation, so would there be enough interest in this format? Or would it be such a small niche that it wouldn’t justify the development team’s effort to create this new battle mode?
A less drastic alternative would be to rebalance some ALPHA and BETA cards, perhaps adding new abilities or creating a system of temporary buffs for specific tournaments.
But I think this option should be discarded.
This could be a middle-ground solution without needing to create a new format from scratch. But then we face another issue: the essence of the old cards is not the same as the new ones. They were designed differently, with another game design philosophy in mind. Changing them could spark a series of negative reactions from the community.
On the other hand.
If nothing is done, these cards will remain mere collectibles, and all their gameplay potential will continue to be wasted. The fact is that Splinterlands has grown and evolved, and if we want these old cards to have any real impact in the game, something needs to be done.
Personally, I think an exclusive format for these old collections would be the most interesting path.
Not only would it give these cards new life, but it would also create a different gaming environment where strategies would have to be based on more classic mechanics. The game has always needed to evolve, but that doesn’t mean the cards that started it all should be forgotten at the bottom of the collection.

Se tem uma coisa que sempre me intrigou no Splinterlands que o torna bastante diferente em comparação de equilíbrio de coleções antigas, é como as cartas das coleções ALPHA e BETA, apesar de serem históricas e valiosas, acabam sendo esquecidas quando o assunto é competitividade real dentro do jogo.
Se você já jogou o suficiente, sabe que essas cartas são praticamente relíquias. Algumas muitas utilizadas no passado como Alric Stormbringer ou o lendário Archmage Arius.
Isso acontece porque o jogo evoluiu. As novas cartas de Rebellion, por exemplo, chegaram com habilidades que fazem qualquer Alpha parecer uma opção bastante atrasada. Sério, não dá nem pra comparar algumas criaturas. Hoje, muitas cartas novas já vêm com duas ou três habilidades distintas desde o primeiro nível, enquanto as antigas precisam subir vários níveis só para desbloquear algo realmente útil. E nem vou entrar no mérito dos novos Invocadores que permitem misturar elementos, criando combinações malucas e estratégias que as cartas ALPHA e BETA jamais poderiam sonhar.
Aí entra a grande questão.
O que fazer com essas cartas?
Porque, sejamos sinceros, para um colecionador, tudo bem, elas são valiosas e fazem parte da história do jogo. Mas para quem joga competitivo, a situação é outra. Quando você entra em uma partida no modo Modern, já sabe que sua coleção antiga é praticamente inútil. No modo Wild, até dá para usar, mas o problema é que Wild também permite todas as outras coleções. E adivinha só?
As cartas mais novas continuam dominando, porque simplesmente têm mais recursos e versatilidade.
Claro, existem torneios que tentam valorizar coleções específicas, mas convenhamos, são poucos.
E quando aparecem, muitas vezes ainda incluem Rebellion e outras cartas mais novas, o que já coloca as antigas em desvantagem. Então, será que a melhor solução seria criar um novo modelo de batalha exclusivo para as coleções ALPHA e BETA? Algo como um terceiro formato além de Wild e Modern?
Se houvesse um modo onde apenas cartas dessas coleções fossem permitidas, o jogo ganharia uma nova camada de estratégia.
Seria uma forma de dar vida a essas cartas sem que precisassem competir contra habilidades muito mais modernas e quebradas. E o mais interessante [e que isso poderia gerar um novo interesse no mercado, já que muitas dessas cartas poderiam finalmente ganhar relevância prática, além do seu valor de colecionador.
Agora, claro, isso não é uma ideia perfeita.
Qualquer mudança desse tipo precisaria ser muito bem pensada para não acabar desbalanceando tudo.
O primeiro problema seria a acessibilidade.
Muita gente nova no jogo nunca teve contato com essas cartas, e se esse novo formato fosse criado, poderia se tornar um ambiente fechado para quem já tem essas relíquias. Então, a menos que houvesse uma forma de facilitar o acesso (talvez um sistema de aluguel exclusivo para esse modo?), poderíamos acabar criando uma bolha onde apenas veteranos conseguem competir.
Outro ponto importante é a própria motivação dos jogadores. Muitos entraram no Splinterlands depois que essas coleções já estavam fora de circulação, então será que haveria interesse suficiente nesse formato? Ou será que seria um nicho tão pequeno que mal justificaria o esforço da equipe de desenvolvimento para criar esse novo modelo de batalha?
Uma alternativa menos drástica seria reequilibrar algumas cartas ALPHA e BETA, talvez adicionando novas habilidades ou criando um sistema de buffs temporários para determinados torneios.
Mas acredito que essa opção deveria ser descartada.
Isso poderia ser uma solução intermediária, sem precisar criar um novo formato do zero. Mas aí entramos em outro problema, a essência das cartas antigas não é a mesma das novas. Elas foram feitas de outra forma, com outro design de jogo em mente. Alterá-las poderia gerar uma série de reações negativas na comunidade.
Por outro lado.
Se nada for feito, essas cartas continuarão sendo apenas itens de coleção, e todo o seu potencial de jogabilidade continuará desperdiçado. O fato é que o Splinterlands cresceu e evoluiu, e se quisermos que essas cartas antigas tenham algum impacto real dentro do jogo, algo precisa ser feito.
Pessoalmente, acho que um formato exclusivo para essas coleções antigas seria o caminho mais interessante.
Não só daria uma nova vida para essas cartas, como também criaria um ambiente de jogo diferente, onde a estratégia precisaria ser pensada com base em mecânicas mais clássicas. O jogo sempre precisou evoluir, mas isso não significa que as cartas que começaram tudo precisam ficar esquecidas no fundo da coleção.
