If there’s one thing I like about Splinterlands, it’s picking up those old cards those creatures that were once part of the meta but are now almost forgotten. Well, today is the day to talk about one of these forgotten legends: SEA MONSTER.
If you’ve been playing Splinterlands for a while, you’ve probably come across this beauty, but I bet it’s been a long time since you last put it on the battlefield.
And what if I told you that you’re wasting one of the best tanks for a low-mana Water element battle?
"There are rumors of Sea Monsters that can swallow a ship whole. The truth is, there are Sea Monsters big enough to swallow the Sea Monster that swallowed the ship whole. Most land lubbers cannot conceive how deep within the planet or how far beyond the horizon the oceans go."
SEA MONSTER is the kind of creature that, on paper, may seem outdated. With the Modern format evolving more and more, it's natural for it to be "forgotten," but when you put it into play, the story changes completely. We’re talking about a tank with 8 health points, 4 melee attack, and one ability that makes all the difference: Heal. With only 8 mana, it enters the battlefield already regenerating 3 health points per round.
Does it seem basic?
Yes.
Does it work? Absolutely.
Now, let’s take things up a notch.
If you have the patience to level this monster to the max, it becomes a true colossus of the seas. At level 10, it reaches 5 attack points, 3 speed, 12 health, and the cherry on top: it gains the Thorns ability. For those unfamiliar, Thorns returns damage to any enemy that dares to attack SEA MONSTER in melee combat. This means that any melee creature trying to hit it will end up taking damage back.
And if that wasn’t enough, it continues healing itself every turn.
So why has it been forgotten?
The truth is that new cards have taken its place, like Xenith Monk and Cursed Windeku. The Monk is widely used after gaining the Heal ability since it has a similar concept, self-healing, and a much lower mana cost.
However, Xenith Monk may be cheap and have Heal, but it doesn’t have enough attack to become a real threat, and its base health is much lower. Cursed Windeku, on the other hand, is a respectable tank that also has Thorns, but it has no healing. If you focus on survivability, Sea Monster is clearly superior since it can tank more damage and still recover on its own.
But how can this work well?
Simple.
Speed buffs are essential since it is quite slow at first, even at its maximum level compared to others.
Someone like Kelya Frendul, who gives +1 speed and +1 armor, is already a huge help. Then, cards that increase its healing or resistance make it practically immortal. River Nymph, for example, can provide Cleanse and remove debuffs, keeping SEA MONSTER always at its peak.
Another important point is that this creature excels in specific battle rules. In the Equalizer mode, where all cards gain the same health as the strongest creature on the field, it becomes an unstoppable force. In Super Sneak mode, where all melee attacks go to the last position, placing SEA MONSTER at the end of the lineup can be a genius move, as it will heal the damage received and still punish attackers with Thorns.
Which makes me wonder:
Why are so few people using this card?
Even in Wild mode, it’s clear.
Maybe it’s just a trend, maybe it’s laziness to test new strategies. Could this change with the Survival mode?

Se tem uma coisa que eu gosto em Splinterlands, é pegar aquelas cartas antigas, embora que aquelas criaturas que um dia já foram do meta, mas hoje quase ninguém lembra. Pois é, hoje é dia de falar de uma dessas lendas esquecidas o SEA MONSTER.
Se você joga Splinterlands há um tempo, provavelmente já cruzou com essa belezinha, mas eu aposto que faz um bom tempo que não a coloca em campo.
E se eu te disser que você está desperdiçando um dos melhores tanks de uma batalha com baixa mana do elemento água?

O SEA MONSTER é aquele tipo de criatura que, no papel, pode até parecer ultrapassada, embora com o formato Modern avançando cada vez mais, seja normal ficar "esquecido", mas quando você coloca para jogo, a história muda completamente. Estamos falando de um tanque com 8 pontos de vida, 4 de ataque corpo a corpo e uma habilidade que faz toda diferença: Heal. Com apenas 8 de mana, ele já entra em campo regenerando 3 pontos de vida a cada rodada.
Parece básico?
Sim.
Funciona? Com certeza.
Agora, vamos subir um pouco o nível da conversa.
Se você tem paciência para upar esse monstro ao seu máximo, ele se torna um verdadeiro colosso dos mares. No nível 10, ele chega a 5 pontos de ataque, 3 de velocidade, 12 de saúde e, a cereja do bolo, ganha a habilidade Thorns. Para quem não está familiarizado, Thorns devolve dano para qualquer inimigo que ousar atacar o SEA MONSTER no corpo a corpo. Isso significa que qualquer criatura melee que vier dar porrada vai acabar tomando dano de volta.
E se já não bastasse isso, ele continua se curando a cada turno seu.
Mas então por que ele caiu no esquecimento?
A verdade é que novas cartas vieram e pegaram seu espaço, como Xenith Monk e Cursed Windeku. O Monk é bastante utilizado após obter a habilidade Heal, já que tem uma proposta semelhante a ele, cura própria e um custo de mana bem mais baixo.
No entanto, o Xenith Monk pode ser barato e ter Heal, mas não tem ataque suficiente para virar uma ameaça real, e sua saúde inicial é bem inferior. Já o Cursed Windeku é um tank de respeito que também conta com Thorns, mas sua cura é zero. Se você focar em sobrevivência, o Sea Monster é claramente superior, pois ele segura mais dano e ainda se recupera sozinho.
Mas como isso pode funcionar bem?
Simples.
Buffs de velocidade são essenciais, já que ele é bem lento no início, e até mesmo no seu nível máximo se comparado a outros.
Alguém como Kelya Frendul, que dá +1 de velocidade e +1 de armadura, já é uma baita ajuda. Depois, cartas que aumentam sua cura ou sua resistência tornam ele praticamente imortal. O River Nymph, por exemplo, pode dar Cleanse e remover debuffs, mantendo o SEA MONSTER sempre no auge.
Outro ponto importante é que essa criatura se destaca em regras de batalha específicas. No modo Equalizer, onde todas as cartas ganham a mesma quantidade de vida da criatura mais forte do campo, ele se torna uma força imparável. No modo Super Sneak, onde todos os ataques melee vão para a última posição, colocar o SEA MONSTER no fim da linha pode ser uma jogada genial, já que ele vai curar o dano recebido e ainda punir os atacantes com Thorns.
O que me faz pensar:
Por que tão poucos estão usando essa carta?
Mesmo no modo Wild é claro.
Talvez seja uma questão de modinha, talvez seja preguiça de testar novas estratégias. Isso talvez possa mudar com o modo Survival?
