Here's the ruleset
Lineup:
Summoner: Mylor Crowling
For the Up Close and Personal ruleset you can't beat a summoner that gives your whole team thorns. Thorns deal 2 damage to my opponent's creatures each time they hit one of mine. Mylor is my first choice for this ruleset.
Tank: Mycelic Infantry
All of my opponent's monsters are attacking with melee and the Shield ability on Mycelic Infantry reduces that damage with each time they attack.
1st position: Fungus Fiend
I don't expect this monster to deal much damage with it's melee attack and it doesn't have the ability to attack from this position for this match's ruleset, but it can soak up a hit and apply thorns. With the Holy Protection ruleset it can soak up 2 hits if my opponent gets that far.
2nd position: Sand Worm
The Sand Worm is slow, but it hits hard when it connects.
3rd position: Disintegrator
Disintegrator is here to Demoralize my opponent's monsters. If their starting melee attack is 2 or less and they're lined up to hit one of my shielded monsters then they deal 0 damage and take thorns. It doesn't matter that my Disintegrator can't attack from here. It's in this position to be protected by Mycelic Infantry in front and Stone Golem in back.
4th position: Stone Golem
Another shielded monster: this one takes any sneak attacks and applies thorns. Again, I don't care that it can't attack from this position.
Did my strategy work?
Yes, my opponent's monsters smashed themselves to oblivion on my thorns. It must have been pretty demoralizing to watch. Yes, that pun was intentional.
What will I try differently next time?
Nothing. Mylor is my first choice of summoner in the Up Close and Personal ruleset. The first monster that I put in these lineups is Mycelic Infantry for it's Shield ability. The second monster I put in is Stone Golem for it's Shield ability and the third is Disintegrator for it's Demoralize ability. I had 9 mana left after that, so the Sand Worm was just a bonus.
The death splinter has some great monsters with melee attacks, but they don't have a summoner as strong as Mylor for this situation. Maybe a good 2nd or 3rd tier option if I had a Zintar in my collection.
Do I like Disintegrator?
Yes, the Demoralize ability on Disintegrator becomes useful on a very regular basis. The card is a great inclusion for matches like this, but not overpowered.
