Im heutigen Guide beschäftigen wir uns mit einer Frage die sich vor allem Neulinge in Splinterlands stellen:

Welche Karte soll ich mir besorgen?

In today's guide we will deal with a question that especially newcomers to Splinterlands ask themselves:

Which card should I get?

Ich selbst habe mir genau diese Frage vor einem guten Jahr, als ich mit Splinterlands angefangen habe, des Öfteren gestellt. Zudem lese ich sie regelmäßig bei uns im Gilden-Discord, beziehungsweise in einigen Kommentaren zu Splinterlands Artikeln hier auf PeakD. Wir zum Beispiel der Splinterlandsspieler @macchiata. Heute versuche ich dir eine Antwort auf diese wichtige Frage zu geben, sofern denn möglich. Ich glaube, dass das Verständnis der Antwort vor allem Neulingen einen großen Vorteil gegenüber anderen Neulingen verschafft welche sich nicht mit der Frage beschäftigt haben. Wir schauen uns heute gemeinsam an ob es gute Karten gibt, was eine Karte als "gut" qualifiziert und was man dann schlussendlich als Anfänger tun sollte oder könnte.

Springen wir gleich mal rein.

I have asked myself this question many times a good year ago, when I started playing Splinterlands. I read it regularly in our guild discord or in some comments to Splinterlands articles here on PeakD. Like our fellow Splinterlandsplayer @macchiata. Today, I'll try to give you an answer to this important question, if possible. I believe that understanding the answer to that question gives newcomers a big advantage over others who never dealt with that question in particular. Today we'll look together if there are good cards, what qualifies a card as "good" and what you should or could do as a beginner.

Let's dive straight into it.

Ausgangfrage: Gibt es gute Karten?

Diese Frage kann man im Allgemeinen mit einem klaren Ja beantworten! Es gibt, wie bei jedem Kartenspiel, immer Karten welche von Natur aus stärker sind als andere. Man vergleiche mit Magic The Gathering oder Hearthstone. Im Fall Splinterlands können wir getrost behaupten, dass zu den stärkeren Karten folgende gehören:

Initial question: Are there good cards?

This question can generally be answered with a clear Yes! There are, as in any card game, always cards that are inherently stronger than others. Comparing with Magic The Gathering or Hearthstone. In the case of Splinterlands, we can confidently say that the stronger cards include the following:

(Es ist wirklich Zufall, dass 3 grüne dabei sind) Jedoch haben diese Karten einen relativ hohen Einkaufspreis, so dass sie nicht unbedingt für Anfänger, welche (zu Beginn) nicht viel Geld in das Spiel investieren möchten, geeignet sind. Eine Alternative aber wäre es die Karten zu mieten.

Auf der anderen Seite gibt es jedoch "kleinere", unscheinbare Karten, die meiner Meinung nach, ziemlich stark sein können und sich hervorragend für Anfänger eignen. Zudem kosten sie im Einkauf weitaus weniger als die oben genannten Karten und man kann sie günstiger aufleveln. Als Beispiele möchte ich folgende auflisten, wobei es sich hierbei um eine persönliche Bewertung handelt:

On the other hand, there are "smaller", inconspicuous cards that, in my opinion, can be quite strong and are excellent for beginners. In addition, they cost much less than the above-mentioned cards and you can level them up more cheaply. As examples I would like to list the following, whereby this is a personal evaluation:

Du siehst, ich habe dir bis hierhin noch nichts wirklich Neues erzählt. Genau wie bei anderen Kartenspielen gibt es in einer begrenzten Auswahl an Karten immer Karten welche spielbarer sind, das bedeutet öfters und flexibler eingesetzt werden können, und andere eben nicht. Dann gibt es auch immer die Karten die an und für sich einfach zu nichts taugen. So, jetzt nachdem wir geklärt haben, dass es gute und schlechte Karten gibt, gibt es in Splinterlands jedoch eine Besonderheit, welche im Vergleich zu anderen Spielen, die Stärke der Karten, beziehungsweise deren Bewertung, stark beeinflusst. Es handelt sich dabei um die Rulesets.

You see, I haven't really told you anything new up to this point. Just like in other card games, in a limited selection of cards, there are always cards that are more playable, meaning they can be used more often and more flexibly, and others that are not. Then there are always cards that are just no good. So, now that we have clarified that there are good and bad cards, there is a special feature in Splinterlands, which, compared to other games, strongly influences the strength of the cards or their rating. The rulesets.

Rulesets

So gut oder so schlecht eine Karte anfänglich bewertet wurde, definieren die Rulesets in Splinterlands, meiner Meinung nach, ob eine Karte gut oder nicht gut ist. Jedoch immer nur für das einzelne Match. Das relativiert demnach die oben gestellte Frage ob es gute Karten gibt. Sorry :)

Um dir das zu veranschaulichen gebe ich dir zwei Beispiele:

Rulesets

As good or as bad a card was initially rated, the rulesets in Splinterlands define, in my opinion, whether a card is good or not. But always only for that specific match. This relativizes the above question if there are good cards. Sorry :)

To illustrate, I'll give you two examples:

Auf Level 1, zwar mit Flying und 7 Rüstung, aber nur einem Leben scheint die Karte zu nichts taugen. Die kleinste Magieattacke schießt den fliegenden Schädel ab. Auch sonst gibt es bessere Tanks... ABER, je nach Ruleset, kann die Karte sehr stark sein. Zum Beispiel wenn keine Magiekarten gespielt werden dürfen, beziehungsweise bei *Melee only Rulesets*, dann muss man sich erst durch die 7 Schilde durchbeißen. Bei *Earthquate* kann er ebenfalls gespielt werden da er fliegt und keinen Schaden erhält. Wenn du davon ausgehst, dass dein Gegner Sneak Monster spielt, kann er gut als hinterer Blocker eingesetzt werden. Du siehst, je nach Ruleset und Strategie, kann die Karte in ihrem spielbaren Wert variieren.

At level 1, with flying and 7 armor, but only one life, the card seems to be useless. The smallest magic attack shoots the flying skull. Even otherwise there are better tanks... BUT, depending on the ruleset, the card can be very strong. For example, if no magic cards are allowed, or in *Melee only rulesets*, then you have to fight through the 7 shields first. In the *Earthquate Ruleset* it can also be played since it flies and receives no damage. If you assume your opponent playing Sneak Monster, it can be used as a back blocker. You see, depending on the ruleset and strategy, the card can vary in its playable value.

Ein anderes Beispiel, Paradebeispiel sogar!

Another example, prime example even!

Im Normalfall ist der *Scavo Chemist* unspielbar. Er macht keinen Schaden, hat wenige Lebenspunkte und eine Fähigkeit die man nicht braucht. In kurz: eine schlechte Karte. Außer das Ruleset *Noxious Fumes* kommt hinzu. Dann ist diese Karte aus den meisten roten Setups nicht mehr wegzudenken und kann über Sieg und Niederlage entscheiden. Schon komisch wie ein Ruleset den Wert einer Karte von unspielbar auf unentbehrlich anheben kann, oder?

Normally the *Scavo Chemist* is unplayable. He does no damage, has few health points and an ability you don't need. In short: a bad card. Unless the ruleset *Noxious Fumes* comes along. Then this card is an indispensable part of most red setups and can decide about victory and defeat. It's funny how a ruleset can raise the value of a card from unplayable to indispensable, isn't it?

Manapool

Der Manapool ist des Ruleset's Bruder und kann zusätzlich eine Karte neu evaluieren. Mein standard Tank in Rot ist die Living Lava, ein Monster. In niedrigen Manapool spiele ich aber lieber den Antoid Platoon, da er mir mehr Möglichkeiten gibt ein größeres Team aufzubauen.

The Mana Pool is the ruleset's brother and can also re-evaluate a card. My standard tank in red is the Living Lava, a monster. In low mana pool I prefer to play the Antoid Platoon, because it gives me more possibilities to build a bigger team.

Was soll ich denn nun als Anfänger tun?

Dir einen konkreten Rat zu geben was du als Anfänger tun solltest ist, wie du dir vorstellen kannst ziemlich schwer und kann nicht pauschal beantwortet werden. Es hängt zudem von deinem geplanten Invest ab, also wie viel Geld du gerne in das Spiel investieren möchtest. Im allgemeinen aber gibt es 2 Möglichkeiten, denke ich:

Etabliertere Spieler werden dir empfehlen einzelne Karten zu kaufen und diese gegebenenfalls aufzuleveln. Dies ermöglicht dir deine Kollektion gezielt aufzubauen.
Ich persönlich habe einen anderen Weg eingeschlagen. Mein Ziel ist es gewesen eine breite Kollektion aufzubauen und habe deshalb in Packs investiert. Damals als Chaos Legion veröffentlicht wurde. Mein Ziel war es mich so zu gut wie möglich auf die einzelnen Rulesets einzustellen. Was bringt mir die vielleicht stärkste Karte des Spiels wenn sie durch die Rulesets nicht mehr wirklich spielbar ist?

What should I do as a beginner?

Giving you concrete advice on what you should do as a beginner is, as you can imagine, quite difficult and cannot be answered in a general way. It also depends on your planned investment, so how much money you would like to invest in the game. In general there are 2 options, I think:

More established players will recommend you to buy single cards and level them up if necessary. This allows you to build up your collection in a more controlled way.
Personally, I have taken a different path. My goal has been to build a wide collection of cards and therefore I bought packs. Back when Chaos Legion was released. My goal was to adapt as well as possible to each ruleset. What's the point of having the strongest card in the game if it's not really playable anymore because of the rulesets.

Mein Tipp

Meiner Meinung nach, und nur meiner Meinung nach, sollte man anfangs nicht auf einzelne Karten gehen. Ziel ist eine breite Kollektion mit mehr Flexibilität und Spielbarkeit für die einzelnen Rulesets aufzubauen. Das bringt meiner Meinung nach mehr als vereinzelte “gute” Karten zu haben, da "Gut" doch stark relativ ist. Danach kann und sollte man noch mit einzelnen Karten vervollständigen.

Allgemein gilt "Don't judge a book by it's cover". Jede Karte hat seine Daseinsberechtigung, man muss sie nur identifizieren.

My tip

In my opinion, and only my opinion, don't go for single cards initially. Aim for a broad collection with more flexibility and playability for each ruleset. In my opinion, that will do more good than one "good" card since we've seen that "good" is relative. After that, you can and probably should complete with individual cards.

In general, "Don't judge a book by it's cover". Every card has its right to exist, you just have to identify it.
